À propos
NetZero's mission is to bring biochar at scale in the tropics – for climate and people, now. Biochar is essentially solid atmospheric carbon extracted from residual plant matter and buried in the soil. It is a scientifically proven way to perform high-permanence carbon removal from the atmosphere while durably improving soil quality, allowing for higher yields and lower fertiliser use in agriculture. Our unique model makes biochar affordable for farmers, helps companies neutralise their unavoidable emissions, and co-generates renewable energy – all at once. NetZero is a two-time winner of Musk Foundation's XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition, a recipient of the Efficient Solution label from Solar Impulse Foundation, a Green Tech prize winner of the Tech for Good Awards, and develops carbon removal projects certified under the Puro Standard.

We recently hosted the XPRIZE Carbon Removal team in Brazil for the on-site audit of the competition. Proud to be among the Top 20 projects competing for the Grand Prize! #NetZero #XPRIZE #Biochar #CarbonRemoval
🌎 Where in the world is the #XPRIZECarbonRemoval team now? 🌎 The team recently visited Brazil to see NetZero’s biochar facilities in action! NetZero’s model is designed to maximize co-benefits beyond carbon removal. Their facility in Lajinha, Minas Gerais, one of the largest biochar production sites in South America, produces 4,000 tonnes of biochar annually from coffee husks. This innovative approach not only captures carbon and stores it in soil for hundreds of years, but also improves soil health, increases crop yields, and reduces reliance on fertilizers—transforming agriculture and fighting climate change. By partnering with Coocafé, a cooperative of 10,000 coffee growers, NetZero ensures that local farmers benefit from higher yields, lower expenses, and greater resilience to extreme weather. Their end-to-end, circular model leverages unused crop residues, bringing economic and environmental benefits to rural areas all while removing over 6,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. NetZero is setting a new standard for sustainable agriculture by creating well-paid industrial jobs, co-generating renewable energy, and scaling biochar as a climate and agricultural solution. 🌱 To learn more about NetZero and the other XPRIZE Carbon Removal finalists, read our blog here. https://lnkd.in/gDjTiPaR

Price premiums for farmers growing low-carbon coffee with biochar! NetZero is proud to have made possible what we believe to be the first-ever purchase of crops with a higher price thanks to biochar. A first lot of sustainable coffee produced with NetZero’s biochar in Brazil has been purchased by Marubeni Corporation, one of the largest coffee traders in Japan, who offered a significant price premium to local farmers to recognise their low-carbon coffee production. This proves that the sustainable benefits of biochar are already recognised by pioneer buyers who want to actively support the development of such practices. Our motto is: “For climate and people, now.“ We will continue to deliver accordingly! For Portuguese speakers, here is the article from Brazilian news channel Globo Rural: https://lnkd.in/gvtS9tcg. An extract: “We [Marubeni] identify biochar as a potentially revolutionary technology capable of addressing environmental and productivity concerns. To support and promote this innovative approach, Marubeni has started sourcing coffee from farms that use biochar in their growing practices.” #NetZero #Biochar #CarbonRemoval #SustainableAgriculture #Coffee #Brazil #Japan

Last Friday, we proudly inaugurated our third biochar plant with 450 guests attending. Located in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo, close to our previous factory, this new site shows our ability to quickly replicate our model along regional hubs, with high local adhesion. We also announced that we will start in July the construction of a new site in Minas Gerais, Brazil. We are thrilled to announce that NetZero is among the finalists of the XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition! What does this mean concretely? That NetZero is recognised as one of the world’s 20 best projects for carbon removal in the most prestigious competition of the industry, funded by the Musk Foundation. Selection criteria for finalists were: - cost per tonne of CO2 removed (lowest possible) - durability (carbon locked for at least hundreds of years), and - scalability (potential of the solution of at least 1 billion tonnes of CO2 removal globally). 2 years ago, NetZero had already been awarded by XPRIZE Carbon Removal, winning a $1 million encouragement prize which turned out to be instrumental in our development. We believe that our unique model (industrial biochar production from crop residues in the tropics, with proprietary technology, close to the sources of biomass, along a fully circular approach that brings numerous co-benefits locally) has been a key differentiator in being selected as a finalist. We intend to continue advocating for this approach - more complex at the beginning, but much more resilient and scalable mid-term. NetZero is now in line for the $50 million Grand Prize of the competition, whose winner will be announced in April 2025 after in-depth audits of all the finalists. We will do our best! In the meantime, congratulations to everyone for the achievement - to our team of course, for the continued effort and dedication, but also to all the finalists and other competing teams, as this is a collective endeavour where everyone is needed! #NetZero #Biochar #CarbonRemoval #XPRIZECarbonRemoval #GettingtoGigatonne

Do you know what biochar is ? It is a charcoal-like natural solution with truly magical-like powers, as it can improve soil health and regeneration while neutralizing carbon emissions. This is exactly what will help us achieve our Nestlé Nespresso SA’s commitment of net zero coffee cultivation. This is why we are so excited to launch two groundbreaking collaborations with industry pioneers to scale the use of biochar in coffee agriculture. Together with NetZero and ECOM Agroindustrial Corp. Ltd. we will significantly increase the supply and utilization of biochar on farms part of the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program in Brazil. More specifically, we are helping to finance an innovative biochar production facility located in the heart of the Carmo de Minas region. But that is not all. To multiply our efforts, we have also pursued a partnership with dss+ and Neumann Kaffee Gruppe (NKG) to pilot a portable biochar production system that can produce biochar directly on farms in the Cerrado Mineiro region. These trailblazing collaborations will accelerate our path to net zero and nature-based coffee production – and it will also empower AAA farmers to maximize the value of their farm by-products. I firmly believe that regenerative soil is essential to our transition, and biochar innovation will revolutionize our regenerative journey. Today, on Earth Day, I am energized and confident about the brighter future we can collectively build. #Nespresso #NespressoCares #EarthDay2024 #Biochar #Regenerative #NetZero
