The ISC’s interpretation of ‘the right to participate in and benefit from science’ (#RightToScience) provides a clear framework for applying this universal right in #research, policy, and global access to scientific #knowledge. ⭐ This interpretation represents a significant step in refining how the right to science is understood and implemented. Originating from the scientific community, it complements UN efforts and empowers scientists to actively shape this global right. The ISC hopes this resource will benefit the scientific, human rights, and international policy communities worldwide. Vivi Stavrou Gustav Kessel Francoise Baylis S. 💫 Introducing the network institutions of the UN Scientific Advisory Board! 🏢 The International Science Council (ISC) is an international non-governmental organization that brings together 250 organizations from all scientific disciplines to advise and influence on issues of major concern to both science and society. Created in 2018 from the merger of the International Council for Science and the International Social Science Council, ISC’s fundamental vision is of science as a global public good. 🌍 ISC has a unique global membership of natural and social sciences and humanities. The Council seeks to provide a credible global voice that is respected in both the public and policy domains and within the scientific community. The UN Special Rapporteur on Cultural Rights Alexandra Xanthaki reflects on the ISC’s interpretation of the #RightToScience, highlighting its importance for inclusive and equitable scientific progress. 🔬 She emphasizes that science must be framed within #HumanRights to create lasting, equitable solutions. #Science is not only a tool for innovation but a cultural resource that empowers individuals and communities. The #RightToScience as a Human Right: In this editorial, Dr. Mahadeo Sukhai, the world’s first congenitally blind geneticist, underscores that the right to participate in and benefit from science is a fundamental human right that must be accessible to all, including individuals with disabilities. Education forms the cornerstone of this right. Without equitable access to science education and resources, we undermine the potential for inclusivity and progress. As Dr. Sukhai emphasizes, inclusivity in science is not only a matter of diversity but a matter of #HumanRights. 🌐 On #HumanRightsDay, we reflect on the Right to Participate in and Benefit from Science – a universal human right that has often been overlooked. The ISC emphasizes that this right is fundamental for all people to access, contribute to, and benefit from scientific knowledge. Participating in and benefitting from science is a universal human right, but the understanding and application of this right has been problematic. State obligations regarding the right to participate in and benefit from science have been neglected, while the implications for scientists – including the fundamental existence of this right – remain overlooked by the global scientific community. Learn more about the ISC's interpretation of the #RightToScience and share your feedback through our questionnaire: https://lnkd.in/eBHa6Dab #InclusiveScience #GlobalScience #HumanRights #ScientificFreedom

Salvatore Aricò, CEO of the ISC, shares key insights on how science can better address global sustainability challenges. "Climate change, biodiversity loss and growing inequality are intertwined issues that demand a bolder, mission-driven approach. To tackle these issues effectively, we must shift to a model of ‘big science’ that mobilises international cooperation, aligns around shared goals and prioritizes impactful, actionable research." Read his thoughts alongside other leading voices in Mediaplanet Climate Action Report, featured in this week’s New Scientist magazine. https://lnkd.in/eXwv7tSm

On this International Day of Solidarity, we reflect on the immense suffering of the Palestinian people and the catastrophic impact of war on #education and #research. In a blog published earlier this year, scientists from #Gaza shared the immense challenges of teaching and conducting research under constant threat and bombardment, as universities have been destroyed, colleagues killed, and entire communities displaced. The destruction of educational and intellectual resources doesn’t just harm the present - it stifles a society’s resilience and knowledge for generations. “The rebuilding of Gaza’s academic institutions is not just a matter of education; it is a testament to our resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to securing a future for generations to come.” - Palestine Academy for Science and Technology. Read their full testimony: https://lnkd.in/ekRAUHPH In 1977, the General Assembly called for the annual observance of 29 November as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (resolution 32/40 B). #ProtectingScience #ProtectScience #CFRS
