Have you ever heard “The complaint of the lonely sustainability champion”? Its IT sector version? Here it is “I listen to the Green IO podcast and others as well, I read newsletters and articles from CAT, GWF, Boavizta, Greenit.fr, GSF, etc. But I’m isolated as a green software champion. I have the feeling that I cannot achieve much by myself. How could we actually do green software in my company?” This episode is all about sharing one concrete use case of someone, Annie Freeman, who achieved to build and deploy an internal tool monitoring carbon emissions in a SaaS company, Xero, with more than 4M users of its accounting software across a dozen countries.  This achievement, among others, has won her to be named a finalist in the New Zealand Sustainable Business Network Awards in 2024 And she started it all by herself when she raised her voice in 2022 at a Xero’s internal technology conference despite having joined the company as a software engineer just a few months ago.   In this episode, Annie Freeman shares great insights with host Gaël DUEZ on:    💪 How two motivated engineers can start a movement in a 4K employees company,    🔎 Tracking the cultural change signals,    🔄 Bringing carbon awareness in existing process rather than creating new ones,    🎓🛠️ Making Community of Practices & tooling working hands in hands,     📊 How Data management primes over UI when deciding to build a carbon dashboard,    🎙️ Why listening to Green IO actually helps (not Gaël saying 😉). 🎉 Celebrate with us the E50 of Green IO! Gaël DUEZ and Tristan Nitot, technologist and entrepreneur, discuss reducing the environmental footprint of digital technology and erooM’s law. Listen to the podcast here: https://lnkd.in/g85_sB5H   📈Moore’s law Gordon Moore, Intel's co-founder, observed that transistor counts on chips doubled every two years. This trend, known as Moore's Law, is a projection of past progress, not a physical law. It was driven by shrinking transistor sizes and reduced energy consumption with each generation.   💹Wirth’s law matters more than Moore’s law Tristan believes that, if not dead, Moore’s law is declining, and Wirth’s law is far more relevant. Niklaus Wirth, visionary software architect, stated that “…as software slows down, the material accelerates”, or as others have since put it: ‘what intel gives you, Microsoft takes away.’ It seems that the more power we have through the technology we invent, the more functionalities we can deploy, the lazier we become as an individual, business, or society.   🌱The birth of erooM’s law By reversing Moore’s law (and Wirth’s?), focus is placed on optimizing software, not hardware. The approach becomes one of a radically organized effort for mass optimization [Effort Radicalement Organisé d’Optimisation en Masse’]. By imposing hardware boundaries, innovation increases whilst reducing the environmental footprint.   🪣‘Buckets’ of opportunities According to Tristan there are literally buckets of opportunities to increase software optimization and reduce any environmental (not just carbon) impact. He is currently developing with the open-source community an optimization methodology which will look to find weaknesses (read under-optimized code) present in IT systems. It's a matter of language. It's a matter of libraries. It’s a matter of storage and architecture too.   🐘 Elephant in the room Tristan acknowledges that AI is a double-edged sword. Impressed by the advancements and general deployment of recent tools, he is clearly unimpressed by the enormous amounts of resources used. And that those who develop or use such technology are not necessarily the ones paying the price. We must stop and ask ourselves what is the true value of using AI, and will it truly deliver its promises.   ➕Positivity Tristan is an optimist, and if constraints foster innovation, the physical reality of climate change and biodiversity collapse can only help us focus on the essential. By adopting erooM’s law, we will certainly become more efficient. And by collaborating with others, we can help drive this optimization within the tech industry with positive impacts for all. ❤️ Subscribe, follow, like... stay connected the way you want to never miss an episode, twice a month, on Tuesday! Why attend the Green IO🎙️ Paris 2024 on December 3rd, 4th and 5th? To network within the amazing Tech & Sustainability community there, to find clients and suppliers too, but mostly because of our amazing speakers! 🎤 🕵️ Let’s have a glimpse of our rich line-up with Guillaume Grillat  who kindly answered 3 questions: What has triggered your decision to join the jury of the Sustainable Digital Challenge 2024? After participating in two editions of the Sustainable Challenge, I found it interesting to switch perspectives by joining the jury. This allowed me to draw inspiration from other companies and engage with the diverse expertise of the other jury members. Can you share one of the key messages that you would like participants to get from the challenge? It’s better to focus on one or two impactful projects within clearly defined functional areas to optimize, involving a smaller but more committed group. What is the most surprising piece of news that you got recently about Green IT? On a positive note, the upcoming evolution in digital platform accessibility regulations in 2025, with the European Accessibility Act, is a significant step forward. E-commerce companies with an annual turnover of at least €250 million will need to comply with both Article 47 and consumer code obligations. By improving platform accessibility, we encourage simplified user journeys, which, in turn, become less energy-intensive. Considering joining? Green IO Paris will be on December 3rd, 4th and 5th. This unique in-person event will provide you with: 🔬 the latest insights from thought leaders in IT Sustainability, 💻 hands-on use cases from practitioners,  🌱 in-depth exchanges with Green IT peers, 🔥 energy flooding from this unique gathering of 500+ like minded responsible technologists. Simply Oury Thomas asking me! Seriously, it's important for the ADEME to be part of this kind of challenge, to ask the right questions about Digital Sufficiency / Sustainable IT, and also understand how the actors are working on these matters. Can you share one of the key messages that you would like participants to get from the challenge? Do you really need Digital / IT? What is the most surprising piece of news that you got recently about Green IT? Elon Musk' support to Donald Trump and his freedom to do whatever he wants including spreading fake news thanks to digital. Considering joining? Green IO Paris will be on December 3rd, 4th and 5th. 📣Wanting to develop sustainable software initiatives in your SaaS company? Look no further 👀 than Episode 49 of Green IO! Gaël DUEZ finds out how Annie Freeman kick-started a footprint tool & a community of practice within Xero.   🦶Kickstarting green software initiatives In 2021, Annie was a young engineer just starting out in Xero. Although new to the company, she was eager to participate in an internal technology conference. Stimulated by a personal interest in green software, she submitted a proposal for a short talk. Her presentation was well received, generating interest and momentum internally within Xero, albeit on an informal basis. In early 2024 things moved up a gear through the opportunity of an internal week-long hackathon. Annie led the April hackathon team to build a carbon footprint calculator for internal resources. Here they trialled (for free) an existing tool called Climatiq, an API for compliant carbon measurements. With access to some data on Xero’s key products, a proof-of-concept product was then put forward to the sustainability team to finance a tailor-made product to develop actionable carbon metrics in-house.   Dual aspect of project Since the April hackathon, Annie, Adrea Snow & colleagues have focused on 2 interrelated aspects: -Developing the Footprint tool, an in-house carbon calculator -The Xero Community of Practice Annie has been leading the CoP, introducing initial learning sessions on the concept of green software and progress so far. This has expanded to offices in other countries. More recently, focus has been on the role of data centers, plus general sessions to find out what really interests colleagues.   💡Top tips Annie admits that dedicated work time & staff are lacking to develop projects,  and relied on “good connections with the sustainability team … [helped] get approval from top management”. She also offers some ideas on how to instigate new projects: ✅Data management is important – need quality data and people to interrogate it ✅Project-based & voluntary approach can be more appreciated than top-down directives ✅Start small, don’t overburden co-workers ✅Visualize data in different ways to help highlight important issues ✅Reach out to people in community –  exchange ideas, ask for advice, follow use cases & deploy best practice   💚 Resources & Tools Annie admits that there is still a need to change the internal culture as many are still focused on specific engineering tasks without necessarily thinking about the wider impacts. But to help us all along our green IT journey, Annie generously shares some useful tools, so listen to E49 here to find out more! Why attend the Green IO🎙️ Paris 2024 on December 3rd, 4th and 5th? To network within the amazing Tech & Sustainability community there, to find clients and suppliers too, but mostly because of our amazing speakers! 🎤 🕵️ Let’s have a glimpse of our rich line-up with Benjamin Schwarz who kindly answered 3 questions: What has triggered your decision to join Green IO Paris? I loved Green IO London (where I was born) but felt frustrated that I didn’t have enough time to listen to other presentations and network with great speakers there. Green IO Paris is in my home city so I can bike there! Can you share one of the key messages that people will get from your talk? I will present the latest from Greening of Streaming’s Remote Energy Measurement Platform (REM) and explain why only data from the real world can help us get a deep understanding of streaming footprint. Time permitting, I’ll also describe our work on a future protocol for energy data sharing in real-time. What is the most surprising word that you will use in your speech?   “Emotion," because I have realised that reason alone isn’t enough to get sustainability into motion. Considering joining? Green IO Paris will be on December 3rd, 4th and 5th.
