Did you know that a French exchange programme can offer you more than just academics? 🌿 By immersing yourself in French culture, you'll have the opportunity to live in a country that prioritises sustainability. France is increasingly encouraging reduced meat consumption and, with numerous second-hand clothing stores across the country, the culture of reusing and recycling clothes is thriving. In addition to that, the country has developed a green recovery plan, which includes three measures for more sustainable daily mobility: To get more people cycling in towns and the countryside. To back low-carbon ways to get around, like trains, by building more metro lines in big French cities, just like they have in Paris. To make public transport better so more people use it. If you like history or interesting facts about France, you may have seen the words “liberty, equality, fraternity” in some book or even in French works of art. But do you know what they mean? “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” is a motto that emerged during the French Revolution and went through several phases before establishing itself as a national symbol. Originally associated with the Age of Enlightenment and promoted by Fénelon, the motto began to gain prominence in 1793 but was quickly changed due to its connection with the "Terror." After a period of abandonment during the Empire, it reappeared with a religious twist during the Revolution of 1848 and was officially recognised as a principle of the Republic. Despite some resistance during the Second Empire and the Third Republic, the motto was reinstated on the facades of public buildings in 1880 and has since appeared in the constitutions of 1946 and 1958, becoming an essential part of the French national heritage. Want to keep improving your French? Reading is an excellent way of reaching that. To help you, we have picked three books that are ideal for staying up with the language while discovering amazing stories. In "The Count of Monte Cristo", the unjustly imprisoned Edmond Dantès escapes from the Isle of If and discovers a secret treasure. With a new identity as the Count of Monte Cristo, he intends to get revenge on those who have deceived him. The novel is about betrayal, justice, and redemption. In the classic "Les Misérables," ex-convict Jean Valjean tries to restore his life after being jailed for stealing a loaf of bread. The narrative is set in nineteenth-century France and addresses social and moral themes. The novel digs into issues of love, poverty, and sacrifice. The novel "The Braid" tells the lives of three women: Smita, an Indian lady battling for a better future for her daughter; Giulia, an Italian woman facing family bankruptcy; and Sarah, a Canadian lawyer in trouble. The book examines female power and unity. Another approach to keeping your French up to date is to participate in an exchange program. How about that?
