It all started with a LinkedIn post from Steve Browne showing the top eight emojis that appear when searching for 'HR'—and they weren't all smiles... This raises the question: where does HR's reputation come from? Steve provided an interesting perspective: “Many people base their perceptions on negative experiences. A single bad interaction with HR can shape their entire view. Additionally, HR has sometimes positioned itself as less accessible, which adds to the issue. When HR isn’t approachable, negative perceptions are not surprising. This post prompts the question: Is this how people view HR, or how HR views people? Conversations with HR professionals often focus on challenging stories rather than celebrating positive ones. It may be a two-sided issue: how people perceive HR and how HR professionals tend to focus on the negative rather than the positive.” As you may have guessed: a perfect topic for our HR Debatable panel!
