AFP returns to Hong Kong Baptist University campus for digital investigation boot camp AFP Fact Check journalists ran a two-day workshop on digital investigation techniques, supported by the Google News Initiative, for more than 60 students at Hong Kong Baptist University. The training sessions – held on October 30 and November 1 -- saw mostly undergraduate and postgraduate journalism students learning digital investigation techniques from AFP’s online training platform (➡️ u.afp.com/DC). The participants practiced basic and advanced techniques for sourcing and verifying online information, discovered tools for fact-checking Chinese content, as well as learning tips for tackling election disinformation ahead of the US presidential poll. The workshop was led by AFP’s regional training manager Sophia Xu, digital investigation editors Zoe ZiQing Low and Jeff Li, digital investigation journalist reporter Tommy W., with support from Rachel Blundy, AFP’s head of digital investigation for Asia-Pacific. They shared some recent case studies and hands-on exercises from real news stories in Asia-Pacific and the US. Undergraduate student Oscar Ma said: “In this boot camp, we’ve got many additional resources and programs for us to fact-check through applications which I didn’t know before. It’s quite interesting to know how to use them in detail to check locations and whether they used AI. It’s also very useful because we have to fact-check when reporting elections and conflicts.” Robin Ewing, senior lecturer at HKBU’s Department of Journalism, said students “really benefited” from the in-depth workshops, which followed a successful bootcamp in 2022. “You’re teaching up-to-date tools which is great, but I think the most important part is really hammering home that mindset of verification that is so essential to journalism,” she said.
