Summary: The Natural Resource Technician assists with the day-to-day activities of a multi-faceted program which primary responsibilities include the general maintenance, improvements and management of Whiterock Conservancy grounds and facilities.
The technician is responsible for helping with the operation and maintenance of equipment, facility maintenance, trails, roads, grounds, wildlife habitat improvements, brush management and more.
Operates hand tools, chainsaws, tractors, trucks and mowers in cutting grass, hauling materials, picking up garbage, paints, repairs, install signs, trim and cut trees and clear brush from trails.
These duties are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.
Other duties may be required and assigned.
Skills and field experience in plant and wildlife identification, invasive species mitigation, equipment use and management, prescribed fire, monitoring and assessment.
The position must be self-motivated with excellent time management skills and comfortable with both individual and group work, and willing to work with the public.
Physical demands of the position include navigating steep and uneven terrain and working in all weather conditions, hiking long distances, performing repetitive motions and lifting and carrying heavy loads.
The work environment will vary with duties that require both indoor and outdoor work.
This position may require travel and occasionally overnight stays.
The Natural Resource Technician must act in WRC’s best interest and carry out responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies, programs and procedures.
This position must be a team player, maintain a positive attitude, good communication skills and be respectful and professional towards other staff members, volunteers and guests.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: · Timely, reliable and consistent physical attendance is an essential function of this position.
· Some weekend and holiday work may be required · Understand and enforce WRC Visitor Rules and Policies · Ensure adherence to quality standards and health and safety regulations · General awareness of safety concerns and reporting issues to supervisor · Assist with checking functionality of safety systems (example: fire alarm) · Assist with the maintenance and installation of appliances, equipment, light bulbs, air filters, etc.
· Assist with minor repairs, such as but not limited to, minor electric, plumbing, carpentry and ground maintenance · Assist with maintaining, servicing, cleaning and properly storing various equipment and vehicles · Assist with maintaining, servicing and cleaning WRC facilities · Assist with inspecting and repairing all damages to buildings · Assist with trail maintenance and development · Assist with farm maintenance and assessments · Participate in various projects and development (example: renovations) · Work with WRC staff to identify repair and maintenance needs in guest accommodations, event venues and office sites.
· Be proactive in researching, identifying, and sourcing cost effective solutions.
· Assist with identification of contractors on larger projects as assigned and acquiring proper documentation for insurance purposes.
· Assumes primary responsibility for maintaining (mowing, trimming, trash) facilities, grounds and guest amenities · Work with WRC staff, partners, and contractors to implement sustainable land management practices, including sustainable campground renovations, trail maintenance, public access areas, etc.
· Willingness to learn and keep up with current non-profit conservation land management techniques, including learning to identify and control invasive species, apply chemicals in an environmentally sensitive manner, habitat and wildlife friendly mowing practices, etc.
· Assist WRC staff with land stewardship projects.
Projects include but are not limited to prescribed burns, mechanical and chemical control of invasive species, timber stand improvement, brush management and seed collection · Collaborate with WRC staff, interns and volunteers for land stewardship projects as needed · Help monitor, assess, and map land for planning purposes, impact studies, ongoing research, contract management, etc.
· Perform other duties and activities as assigned Secondary Duties · Participate in general land maintenance needs, including facility and campground landscaping, trash and litter removal, trail maintenance, lane maintenance, and pond maintenance.
· Assist WRC Staff with scouting and monitoring Whiterock guest areas for cleanliness and guest safety.
· Works with the public to provide assistance and with WRC staff during related activities prior to, during, and following WRC hosted special events.
· Assist in all aspects of on and offsite WRC events and educational programming · Collaborate with WRC staff to organize and work volunteer group projects and activities · Capture content for Whiterock’s website, social media and communications as able by recording plant and wildlife sightings · Attend weekly Operations meetings, regular team check-ins, and periodic reviews · Participate in the recruitment and coordination of prospective volunteers · Help train and orient volunteers to WRC, operations and equipment · Keep up to date on the latest management strategies and safety protocols, and engage in pertinent trainings and certifications (prescribed burn, pesticide applicators, etc.
) · Support trail users, campers, and other Whiterock guests by giving directions, answering questions, and providing resources · Mitigate immediate safety risks across trails and guest facilities and help with all-hands-on-deck projects when needed Preferred Minimum Qualifications - (Education and Experience): · Bachelor’s degree in related field with minimum 2 years of experience preferred · High school diploma or GED with equivalent work experience or combination of coursework and work experience considered · Desire to work for a nonprofit organization in a rural setting and live within a 40min commute · Valid driver’s license · Ability to use own vehicle for business related activities (reimbursable under Whiterock Conservancy travel policy).
· Ability to use personal cell phone (with reimbursement) to stay in contact with Whiterock Conservancy staff, volunteers, guests and visitors as needed.
· Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends, willingness to travel for short periods of time · Strong desire to learn new skills in the conservation, agricultural and outdoor recreation fields · Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions · Independently navigate trails on-foot, in a UTV, or on a 4-wheeler for miles at a time · Ability to perform physically demanding tasks · Previous experience with heavy machinery, equipment, power tools and hand tools · Ability to work independently and as a positive team member · Excellent time management and priority skills · Excellent communication and listening skills · Professional, respectful and reliable conduct Physical Demands: · Standing – Approximately more than 2/3 of on-the-job time.

· Works majority of the time in outdoor weather conditions under common weather situations including heat, cold, and inclement weather Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: · Valid Iowa driver’s license · CPR & First Aid Certification · Basic Wildland firefighting (S130, S190, L180) – Must attain within 1 year of hire date · Must have or will attain Pesticide Certification within the 3 month probationary period.
