imPROMPTu - thought bubbles on building products in the AI era Thought bubble #6: In the future, we are all directors, not editors. And we need a new class of tools. Today's state of the art AI models are extremely capable in generating text, images, and now 3D models, charts, graphs and videos. As we see amazing AI generated content out in the wild (using GPT, Midjourney, Sora, Runway, and more) it is tempting to think that “a prompt is all you need” and the AI can just do the rest. Here is my take based on playing with the different tools and exploring the space the past few months. 1. The first draft is on AI Prompting is great to get around the blank canvas problem and getting me started on a document or a content draft. Of course, blank prompts are no less daunting. Example prompts or madlib style templates are useful in giving me a warm start. Voice transcription is another way to convert stream of consciousness thoughts into a working draft in short order. 2. But The SOTA is still a slot machine. Especially when it comes to visual creation. Given the rich dimensions in the latent space, the black box and stochastic nature of models today, it is hard for us as users to be able to control or direct the output of these models. I am not just talking about “bugs” like the six finger problem that existed in image generation a year ago, but our basic need to shape the generated output to match the creative idea in our mind. E.g. tweaking the level of detail in a scene, altering the perspective, colors, hues, composition, tone. 3. We need to invent a UI that lets us *direct* AI. Generating is cheap, Directing is hard. Very few pieces of content are one shot and done. Prompts are great for generation (and regeneration) but I find them unwieldy and imprecise tools for directing Al to edit or tweak specific parts of the document or content. This is particularly true for visual content where showing is easier than spelling out what you want changed. For example, being able to direct AI to generate multiple takes on content that reflects very different points of view and helps us compare the outputs. The only escape hatch today is to go back to pure manual editing.tools and wade through the sea of menus and complex UI knobs. With generative AI, our creativity is no longer in painting the pixels, but in expressing our perspective. We will need to build a new class of “director tools” that captures our perspective, helps us direct the AI to draft, iterate on and refine our ideas, vs having to manually do it all ourselves or delegate entirely to the slot machine AI.

MOONSHOT talk about the progress of AI We tend to treat the future in exactly the same way as the present or the past, and we are well advised to refrain from doing so. If we like to divide our thoughts into facts on the one hand and judgements on the other, then the facts describe what has actually taken place, the things that are or events as they physically happened. Our judgement, on the other hand, is our personal contribution, our free choice of how we evaluate or judge something.  While we are well advised to understand the present and the past as an actualised sum of facts, the future is quite different. And although this is the case, we tend to treat it in the same way when we make overly flippant judgements: "No, I don't believe in that. I'm sure the future will be like this." Have we then made our choice of the future we want to believe in? And do we then intuitively align all our actions with this choice? Few things are more fascinating than the innerworkings of the human mind - a close second for me is the AI mind. Anthropic, led by former OpenAI experts, is pioneering AI safety and research with groundbreaking insights into how models like GPT and Claude think. Through "dictionary learning," (fascinating) they've unraveled how AI conceptualizes and processes information, mirroring the human brain at an alarming rate. Anthropic’s team was able to create detailed maps of the AI’s brain, showing how different ideas are connected. They also found some troubling stuff in the AI’s neural web—concepts related to things like code backdoors, biological weapons, and even biases like racism and sexism. It’s a bit like seeing all the dark thoughts humanity has ever had reflected in the AI’s mind. But the good news is that understanding these connections could help make AI safer by removing harmful ideas or preventing the AI from generating dangerous content. AI is as ethical as the beings that created it...uh oh. From AI safety to the Scarlett Johansson voice experiment gone way wrong, OpenAI has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. The latest dust-up, however, provides a good lesson for workers about non-compete agreements and non-disparagement clauses - and why it pays to understand your rights. Many of us are familiar with non-compete agreements. They're typically included in the pile of work documents given to employees on the first day that require their digital "John Hancock" as a condition of employment. In the traditional sense, they typically prevent workers from joining competing businesses or launching ones of their own. But what's often buried in many of them are non-disparagement clauses, which prevents one or both parties from making negative statements about each other anywhere (references, social media, etc.). The key takeaway here is that these agreements are generally nonenforceable. In the case of OpenAI, the company went further by actually threatening departing workers with the loss of their vested equity in the company if they they didn't sign a non-disparagement agreement in 7 days. Two words come to mind: extreme and unorthodox. While the one-week ultimatum is bad enough (companies usually provide up to 60 days), taking away vested stock options for not signing the document or violating the clause is way over the top. The whole situation with OpenAI has been made worse in this case by Sam Altman who denies not knowing about non-disparagement clauses in exit deals. The reality is senior leaders know exactly what is in those agreements so the denial has only snowballed into a bigger issue. Ethics aside, what happened to good PR management? OpenAI's continued stumbles provide lessons for other companies about the importance of ethics, checks and balances and (gulp) transparency. Given the concerns around AI and its existential risks, companies in the AI industry should and need to bend over backgrounds to establish public trust and with it, absolute transparency. The very people entrusted with building this powerful technology, should feel empowered to express concerns without fear of financial repercussions. If this internal culture of openness isn't present, then how can you expect to earn the public's trust? For workers, noncompetes and non-disparagement clauses are generally unenforceable and now outright banned for most. But that doesn't necessarily stop employers from including them. Even in places such as California where they've been unenforceable for a long time, these agreements still manage to creep in. Publishers are still deep in experimentation mode integrating ads into gen AI products. On one hand, they might not get the views or clicks needed to make money. Or, they get the clicks but make the user experience clunky. The last thing we want is for people to get annoyed and lose trust. I think optimizing the experience and ensuring relevancy with data are better routes than an AI-feature subscription model. More on that to come... #GenAI #Monetization #Publishers

Juicy new survey from McKinsey finds a huge spike in generative AI usage within companies, doubling from 10 months ago to 65%. It's also expanding into more business processes, and more personal use. And about half of companies are using off-the-shelf tools (like ChatGPT, Anthropic Claude, etc.), which I—and many others—believe is a great place to start. Interesting to see how this contrasts with a recent pessimistic survey that found just 7% of people use ChatGPT daily. Why the difference? That survey looked at the general population. But only about 60% of the US is employed, and only about 60% of those people are in white collar jobs. So that doesn't tell us much about penetration into the white collar workforce. The McKinsey survey tracks with what other studies, such as a recent one from Microsoft, find: People in white collar jobs are using generative AI frequently, and for an increasing range of tasks.
