Members of the Craft have developed forensic science, solved famous crimes and invented all manner of things. Several members of the royal family have been members of the Craft and the declining interest in the organisation from younger royals is also discussed. Masons have been very active in the criminal justice system – both as ‘goodies’ and ‘baddies’. It was a Mason who formed the Special Branch to fight terrorism and another who brought the Moors Murders to an end. In some cases, such as the Cleveland Street Scandal, Masons found themselves on both sides of the law. The medical profession is also well-represented in lodges. Happily, it was a member of the Craft who rescued the Elephant Man and a Masonic doctor was the first to identify an occupational cancer. On the other side of the coin, there have been evil Masonic doctors who committed murder and other heinous crimes. One Masonic surgeon may have committed regicide with the ‘mercy killing’ of a king. In addition, there are stories of weird and wonderful Masons – celebrities, film makers, soldiers, explorers, world-famous businessmen, politicians, forgers and scoundrels. These subvariants, derived from the JN.1 variant and including KP.1 and KP.2, are more transmissible but generally result in less severe illness. The World Health Organization is monitoring these variants due to their potential impact on global health. With cases on the rise, Australian health officials urge continued vigilance and public health measures to curb the spread. In other news, the New South Wales government has announced a two-year extension for the Eraring Power Station, Australia’s largest coal-fired power plant. Origin Energy may further extend the plant's operations until 2029 without state compensation. New Zealand pilot Phillip Mehrtens was released by West Papua insurgents more than 18 months after being kidnapped while working for Indonesian airline Susi Air. He was abducted by rebels from the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) on February 7, 2022, at Nduga airport, where they also set fire to his plane and released five passengers. Mehrtens was handed over to the Cartenz Peace Taskforce, a joint Indonesian security force dealing with separatist groups in Papua, and was found to be in good health. His release was confirmed by New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters, who expressed relief for Mehrtens’ family and friends. Mehrtens’ abduction was part of the TPNPB's broader campaign for Papuan independence, with the rebels demanding that Indonesia recognise Papuan independence in exchange for his release. His captivity included sporadic video appearances under duress. Mehrtens’ release was the result of intense diplomatic efforts between New Zealand and Indonesia. During his 592-day ordeal, Mehrtens played a crucial role in providing air links and supplies to remote communities. His release highlights the complex and dangerous situation faced by foreign nationals working in conflict zones in Indonesia's Papua region. While it is unclear if New Zealand made any concessions, it is likely that they will be doing something for the group; however, it is highly unlikely that this will go as far as recognising their claim. It is more likely that New Zealand agreed to support the group in pressuring Indonesia to give the region more autonomy, possibly with the goal of it becoming a self-governing region, something seen in other places around the world. According to The Washington Post’s polling average, neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor former president Donald Trump is currently clearly favored in enough states to get to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. Harris is ahead in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada, while Trump leads in Georgia and Arizona. North Carolina is tied. But with the help of our polling averages, we’ve identified five likely paths to the White House based on Harris and Trump’s standing in the polls. We’ve also identified three less likely paths, including a tie in the electoral college.

It seems the UK’s Conservative Party are bound to lose the General Election, regardless of when in the year they call it. Damage limitation is now the name of the game. But, the question remains: who stands to benefit?
