#Throwback to when the first Wärtsilä 32 Methanol engines departed from our Vaasa factory in April 2023. Destination? A new methanol-powered offshore wind installation vessel by Van Oord. ✨ Setting the pace: Launched in March 2022, the Wärtsilä 32 Methanol engine together with the MethanolPac are among the first commercially available solutions for using methanol as a fuel in the maritime industry. Can Finland become a leader in the green transition? Wärtsilä’s new power system modelling shows that this is possible – but only if reliable and flexible balancing power is put in place. The study was the theme for Wärtsilä's 190 years anniversary seminar today at our Sustainable Technology Hub in Vaasa. The discussion was opened by Finland's Minister of Environment and Climate Change Kai Mykkänen, Mayor of Vaasa Tuomas Häyry and Wärtsilä’s President and CEO Håkan Agnevall.   Malin Östman, VP Strategy and Business Development, took us through the study's key findings: 1. Finland has a good foundation for becoming a forerunner in the green transition: suitable weather conditions and space for wind power, a strong power grid, clean electricity and an ambitious carbon neutrality goal. 2. But Finnish consumers and industry face future shortages and price hikes due to a lack of flexible balancing power. Wärtsilä's modelling shows that adding 2 GW of flexible balancing power would lower electricity costs by 1.3 billion euros per year, improve Finland’s resilience to crises and reduce weather dependency. 3. We have no time to lose, and incentives are needed. Finland needs a capacity mechanism to support investments in flexible balancing power. The presentation was followed by an animated panel discussion with leading voices from Finland’s energy sector: Peter Lund from Aalto University, Heikki Vestman, Member of Parliament, Tuomas Rauhala from Fingrid, Pasi Kuokkanen from ELFI and Kenneth Engblom from Wärtsilä. Finland has a great opportunity to take a leading position in the green transition and make the country an attractive destination for green industrial investments. However, our power system must change to ensure reliable and cost-efficient energy as we become more dependent on intermittent renewables. The technology needed to do this already exists today. With only 25 years to go until the net-zero target of 2050, the time for decisions and actions to be taken is now. KONGSBERG to deliver Joint Strike Missiles to Australia 🇦🇺 Our business area Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace has signed a contract with the Commonwealth of Australia to deliver the Joint Strike Missile (JSM) for the F-35A aircraft. The initial contract is worth about NOK 1 billion. The specific JSM capabilities enhance the advanced F-35A aircraft, creating a formidable capability against land and sea targets, and boosting Australia’s ability to strike targets from long-range. The Joint Strike Missile (JSM) has been specifically designed for internal carriage on the F-35 aircraft and provides a significant long range maritime strike and land attack capability. JSM is an air-launched strike missile and is designed to fulfill complex missions, such as Anti-surface Warfare (ASuW) and land attack. Last week, the Australian Government announced a decision to invest in the construction of a new factory for KONGSBERG strike missiles in Newcastle, Australia. TECO 2030, BLOM Maritime and Samskip receive Enova SF grant to retrofit Samskip LNG Vessel with fuel cells and hydrogen fuel TECO 2030 together with BLOM Maritime and Samskip receive a grant for a pre-project aiming to retrofit Samskip’s vessel Kvitnos with TECO 2030 fuel cells and hydrogen fuel. This innovative project aims to significantly reduce emissions from this LNG-fueled vessel, which currently operates on a weekly multipurpose service from Rotterdam, The Netherlands and along most of the Norwegian coastline to Hammerfest. By switching to zero-emission hydrogen technology, these partners join in their goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Fuel cell maker Blue World Technologies has completed testing of the world’s first 200 kW high-temperature PEM fuel cell module. The test was completed at the newly established test facilities in Aalborg, where the fuel cells for the system are produced. According to the company, the initial testing has exceeded performance expectations. With an electrical efficiency of up to 55% when reaching a commercial stage, the fuel cell system will typically provide a fuel saving of 20-30% enabling a cost-efficient use of green fuels. The system also allows up to 100% carbon capture for utilisation in green fuel production and storage. The system, based on high-temperature PEM fuel cell technology, provides high-grade waste heat of 150°C and when powered by renewable methanol, the system has a net zero operation. “During the test period, we successfully validated our system setup with the methanol fuel processor, the series connection of the fuel cell stacks, as well as the balance of plant components surrounding the fuel cells”, said Dennis Naldal Jensen, CTO at Blue World Technologies. The first pilot system will be a 1MW system for onboard power production. The system will be installed on one of A.P. Moller-Maersk’s large dual fuel-enabled methanol vessels and the installation on board is expected during the first half of 2026. The order for the pilot system was followed by an $11.8m investment by Maersk Growth, the venture arm of A.P. Moller-Maersk, at the end of 2023 alongside The Export and Investment Fund of Denmark, Cycle Group, and other new and existing shareholders. “The maritime industry needs multiple new technologies and pathways to reach its net-zero targets, and high-temperature PEM fuel cell technology is very promising in finding a balance between high electrical efficiency, size, and load adjustment. This is a great example of how we can support innovation through both investment and partnership”, added Alex Smout, investment director at Maersk Growth. Blue World will initially supply systems for auxiliary power and expects that its maritime system will reach a commercial level in 2027. Eventually, the company will proceed to supply multi-megawatt propulsion systems for global shipping.

As part of our first EUDP - Det Energiteknologiske Udviklings- og Demonstrationsprogram backed project in 2021 and 2022, we carried out a detailed study with Siemens Gamesa which clearly concluded that wave energy has the potential to become competitive to offshore wind in the mid-term. It is therefore very positive to see that our results have now been validated also by Delft University of Technology and LUT University, in a european sponsored study EU-SCORES. Wärtsilä secures China’s largest-ever methanol newbuild order Technology group Wärtsilä will supply the methanol-fuelled auxiliary engines for five new container vessels for COSCO Shipping Lines Co., Ltd and seven new container vessels for Orient Overseas Container Line. Each vessel will operate with three 8-cylinder and two 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 32M engines. This is the Chinese maritime sector’s largest order to date for methanol-fuelled newbuild vessels. The order was booked by Wärtsilä in December 2023. To complement the solution, the ships will be equipped with the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust cleaning systems and alternators. These will be supplied through Wärtsilä’s joint venture company, CWEC (Shanghai) Company Ltd. (‘CWEC’). The Wärtsilä 32M methanol-fuelled engine has received type approval certificates from several classification societies around the world. Studies have shown that using methanol instead of heavy fuel oil can cut CO₂ and other GHG emissions. Wärtsilä will supply its latest addition to the company’s engine portfolio, the Wärtsilä 25, for a new 44-metre-long stern trawler. The vessel is being built for Faroe Islands operator VARDIN and is the first of three new vessels for the Faroe Islands. The following two fishing vessels are jointly owned by Vardin and fellow Faroe Island operator Framherji and will also feature the Wärtsilä 25 engine. With increasing pressure for the marine industry to decarbonise, fishing operators focus more on reducing fuel consumption and increasing overall vessel efficiency. The modular, upgradeable design of the Wärtsilä 25 engine will allow Vardin to reduce vessel fuel consumption and emissions from the first mile while providing the readiness to run on alternative fuels whenever viable – all without compromising performance. 📰 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒 - 𝐅𝐣𝐨𝐫𝐝1 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐧𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐀𝐕 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 Ferry operator Fjord1 AS has contracted HAV Group’s energy design and smart control systems business, Norwegian Electric Systems (NES), to develop systems for automation of vessel functions and autonomous navigation for the four autonomous, zero-emission ferries that will operate the Lavik-Oppedal crossing on the northwest coast of Norway. Lavik–Oppedal is a ferry route that crosses the Sognefjord, on the northwest coast of Norway. The ferry crossing takes 20 minutes, and the route is 5.6 kilometres long. “This is a contract that we have been working towards for more than a year in close collaboration with Fjord1, regulatory bodies and class society. A milestone where we have invested in our people and in our product. This contract is not only important milestone for Fjord1 and HAV Group, but for the global maritime industry. It involves technology that will support seafarers and ensure that ferries operate efficiently and safely. Autonomous vessels represent a vital part of what the future for maritime transport will develop into, and we are through this contract taking part in shaping it,” says Siv Remøy-Vangen, managing director of HAV Group’s business area for energy design and smart control systems. In close collaboration with Fjord1, HAV Group’s subsidiary will develop the systems for automation of vessel functions and autonomous navigation, including autocrossing and autodocking, that will replace some manual operations on board.   HAV Group’s autonomous navigation system will be at the forefront of technological innovation, with advanced functions such as automatic steering of the vessel at all speeds and directions, automatic fjord crossing and automatic docking to the quay without the need for human intervention. The four newbuild zero emission ferries will operate the route from 1 September 2026 onwards. Complete implementation of automation functions and autonomous systems, including autocrossing and autodocking, will happen in 2027, while autonomous navigation will be implemented in 2028. HAV Group’s contract party is Norwegian Electric Systems (NES), which will manage the project out of its headquarter in Bergen, Norway. “We have over the years invested in our people and a significant amount in R&D to develop technologies that set the standard for the maritime industry. HAV Group possesses a broad portfolio of maritime technologies that have been designed to deliver safer and more cost-efficient vessel operations.
