Amid violent unrest in New Caledonia, the governments of Australia and New Zealand are sending planes to evacuate their nationals. Hundreds of tourists have been trapped in hotels due to the turmoil. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed that French authorities have authorized two evacuation flights, with additional flights being planned. Approximately 300 Australians are currently in New Caledonia. New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced that an initial flight would bring home 50 passengers with urgent needs, with more flights to follow. The French High Commission in New Caledonia reported that the airport remains closed for commercial flights, leaving around 3,200 people stranded. The unrest in New Caledonia began over changes to the constitution that would allow more migrants, primarily from France, to vote, sparking deadly riots after the National Assembly approved the changes. The riots have led to six deaths, hundreds of injuries, and widespread destruction, including looted and burnt businesses and road barricades. The indigenous Kanak people fear the new voting rules will dilute their political influence. French authorities are deploying additional military and police forces to protect public buildings and maintain order. Source: AFP, AP, Reuters So what It is surprising to me that these evacuations have taken so long, it is likely that if the country was not controlled by France then they would have happened much sooner. One trouble, particularly for NZ will be a lack of air assets, limiting the number of trips and likely leading to a reliance on Australia to evacuate some of our citizens. Regardless, this is a great example of why countries, even little old New Zealand need a defence force, because you never know where and when you will need them. Approving Qatar Airways investment into Virgin Australia a key first step in strengthening Australia’s airline competition. What Australia’s Aviation White Paper said – and what we’d like it to have said… In August the Australian government released its long awaited aviation policy statement, “Towards 2050”. Since the “Green Paper” was released a year previously for public comment, policymaking had more or less been in limbo. So there were probably some inflated expectations that the White Paper would make definitive and helpful statements at a seminal time in the industry’s evolution. The expectations did indeed prove to be inflated. We’d like to address three of the issues we see as most significant, both substantively and popularly: 1.       Competition in the domestic market, 2.       Consumer protection and 3.       The environment (with special emphasis on electric-powered aircraft and regional services) There are many other important issues, like planning to reduce skills shortages, but these three are the key policy areas.   Part 1: Competition in the domestic market   ·     This is a pivotal moment for the Australian airline market ·     A transparent policy framework is needed, with settings that ensure two sustainable airlines and allows for new entrants ·     Much revolves around access to Sydney Airport (and later to Western Sydney Airport), but there’s more to it ·     A more active ACCC role in monitoring market behaviour and mergers ·     The White Paper carefully avoids rocking the boat A pivotal moment for domestic aviation   This year is, or should be, pivotal for the future of the domestic airline market. Achieving that outcome depends on getting the regulatory and airport access settings right. Government is now in a position to build fences to deliver a more competitive domestic airline future. Unfortunately the White Paper hasn’t given much cause for optimism on that front. Qantas is the 800 pound gorilla in Australia's domestic airline market, accounting for about two thirds of its capacity (a similar proportion to Woolworths and Coles combined) and an even higher proportion of its profits. Virgin Australia mops up most of the remainder. Add to that the fact that two large jet airlines have recently gone out of business, Rex and Bonza, along with a massive amount of consumer disaffection with Qantas’ behaviour in the wake of the Covid pandemic and you have a lot of discussion about how to "fix" things. The US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has renewed temporary denial orders (TDOs) against Mahan Airways and 12 related parties. BIS first issued the TDO in 2008 because of evidence that Mahan Airways had re-exported 3 US-origin aircraft to Iran. BIS has renewed the TDO several times (most recently in 2023). Since 2008, BIS has modified the TDO, adding parties that have helped Mahan violate the TDO and US export regulations. Good Friday morning, Expect airport delays at BZN (BOZEMAN,MT) this weekend due to a FLY-IN. It appears as if LSZH and EHAM are both in recovery mode after last night's IT disruption. EGPH is not available due to IT issues. No night slots at EGCC from 2330-0600 local time until Oct 27th. Tropical outlook - West Pacific / Indian Ocean basin - invest area 91W, 175nm East of Manila will move slowly to the WNW over the next few days and slowly strengthen. Invest area 92W, 865nm SSE of Kadena AFB, Okinawa, Japan will move to the NNW over the next few days and could rapidly intensify. I have included a few images from the latest EURO model to show possible outcomes. Eastern Pacific- Atlantic - no concerns for the next several days. US Severe weather outlook - slight risks exist through this evening from Western KS to the Rapid City area. In the longer range, into next  week an overall stagnant upper pattern, a somewhat nondescript surface pattern lacking any appreciable cyclogenesis is forecast. Thus, severe weather chances appear low. Europe analysis - a cold front will pass through the UK on Saturday with a few showers and heavy thunderstorms, mainly over France and by Sunday it will pass through Germany, thereafter, becoming stationary over central Spain. Expect significant enroute delays over Central Europe on Sunday as a result of this thunderstorm activity. Estofex has already an alert for possible severe thunderstorms on Saturday over much of France, and the Balkans. Qatar Buys 25% of Virgin Australia Virgin Australia announced that Qatar Airways plans to acquire a 25% stake in the airline, marking a significant move to strengthen their partnership. The deal will allow Virgin Australia to re-enter the long-haul international flight market, with flights connecting major Australian cities to over 100 destinations via Doha. However, the transaction is still awaiting regulatory approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB). If approved, the new services could launch by mid-2025, providing a $3 billion boost to the Australian economy through expanded travel routes. This strategic investment follows Virgin Australia's recovery from voluntary administration in 2020, positioning the airline to compete more effectively with its main rival, Qantas.

Senators urge pilot retirement age rise as experience leads to fewer accidents In the letter published on November 20, 2024, lead signee Senator Marsha Blackburn and her colleagues said that data supported the argument that “experienced pilots have fewer accidents than junior pilots”. According to the letter, the ICAO recently “advanced formal action directed at raising or even eliminating the institution’s recommended pilot retirement age of 65 years” at the 14th Air Navigation Conference.
