Another milestone in flexible electricity distribution grids⚡️ Together with our partners, we are introducing one of Europe’s first dynamic grid pricing schemes for LV grids. Our tech stack identifies local grid bottlenecks in real time and creates a corresponding local grid pricing signal that, in turn, is used to automatically steer the flexible loads in the grid (like e.g. EVs or heat pumps). This is the beginning of a new world in which Customers can minimize BOTH their Energy AND Grid costs within a given comfort level (e.g. “keep my house between 21 and 22 degrees with the minimum energy+grid costs” or “do the night-charging of my EV with the minimum energy+grid cost, as long as my car car is fully charged by 06.30 AM”). What is the difference between “dynamic tariffs” and “time of use tariffs”?. This is a question that I get very often. As the energy transition is turning LV feeders into full blown power systems (with their own production, consumption and storage, with complex bidirectional power flows, and with congestion and voltage events continuously changing over time and over space), time of use tariffs are becoming obsolete and at times even counterproductive. For example a time of use tariff that has a lower grid price from 23.00h to 06.00h, often creates huge “EVpeaks” at exactly 23.00h, instead of sequentally synchronizing the charging of the EVs in the feeder from 23.00 to 06.00h for minimum peak. In LV, a street can have overvoltage and overproduction issues (due to too much solar PV from the sports arena in the street), and the next street, at the same time, can have exactly the opposite problem (due to a public parking in the street that has now installed EV chargers), how can a time of use tariff solve that? And a last example, in the grids of many of our customers, we see solar PV curtailment happening, and at the same time in the same street feeder, EVs not charging because “it is peak time in the grid tariff”. It happens every day. “Dynamic grid tariffs” can solve all these issues associated with “time of use tariffs” and can address all these “unaddressed optimization opportunities”, in which “problem + problem = solution”, creating win-win situations for consumers and grid operators. Besides real-time dynamic tariffs, there are other forms of flex-grid tariffs (e.g. if you give the DSO real time access to your heat pump within pre-agreed limits, you get a monthly rebate in your grid fees of X eur/month), that provide price certainty for the consumer and at the same time real-time flexibility optimization for the DSOs, which are also very promising. Germany’s upcoming EnWG 14a is a good example of that. In any case, it is truly inspiring to see DSOs walking the talk and taking real steps to implement these new schemes for consumers. This kind of real-time intelligent interplay between consumers/prosumers and the grid is the ultimate “smart-grid”. #flexiblegrids #gridofthefuture #plexigrid

SpeedLocal: Enhancing local implementation and social acceptance The development of integrated energy planning is a crucial step to achieve a green energy transition. However, guidelines and tools are needed to help stakeholders balance energy needs and potentials with resource availability, landscape impacts and community demands. The SpeedLocal project, funded by Nordisk Energiforskning through the Nordic Grand Solutions Programme, aims to address the need for such tools as well as empower local stakeholders to collaborate on sustainable integrated energy plans. The project strives to bridge the gap between traditional research disciplines and improve coordination across geographical and governance scales. City of Oulu and the region of Northern Ostrobothnia have huge possibilities for hydrogen-based ecosystem development and green transition as a whole. Renewables folks - come to Solarplaza Finland on the 28th of November! I'll try my best to be entertaining, but still leave room to the industry experts sharing their views regarding Solar & Energy Storage in Finland! No but honestly - super interesting to see what happens with the storage market in Finland, as general understanding is that saturation will happen due to new batteries entering the market. At the moment total amount of batteries in the reserve market is a ≈ 85 MW. Estimated need for reserve capacity expected to grow 800 MW (up-regulation) and 1200 MW (down-regulation). Naturally other energy forms such as nuclear and hydro also participating in the reserves. Currently different FCR markets currently have 400-1100 MW of pre-approved capacity alltogether, but many of these are older plants (for example hydro) that will have challenges with the new grid code requirements of Fingrid (grid code qualification test performed every 5 years). We at Olana Energy are doing our best to be among the first players to enter the Finnish BESS market. Let's see the amount of players in the market when our first batteries become operational! 😎

Merus Power delivers battery energy storage to Enertia Tiedote suomeksi sijoittajasivuilla. Merus Power has signed a contract to supply a 9.9 MW/ 9,8 MWh battery energy storage system to Enertia Oy. The deal also includes a service and maintenance contract. The energy storage facility will be built in Forssa and commissioned by the end of 2025. This order supports Merus Power’s growth strategy and strengthens the company’s leading position in the domestic energy storage market. The main function of the energy storage facility is to support the balance between generation and consumption in the grid by participating in the wholesale electricity market and Fingrid’s reserve market. As renewables become more common, balancing electricity production and consumption will require more energy capacity that can be quickly adjusted. Enertia Oy is a Finnish energy storage company founded in 2024 with the aim of building around 20 MW of battery energy storages annually. “This project is an important milestone for us. Our business relies on the return on energy storages, and we wanted a reliable and experienced supplier as our partner. Things are developing in our electricity industry, and here are my SEVEN ELECTRICITY TAKEAWAYS from the Norwegian industry meeting place at #Arendalsuka: 1) Energy efficiency has immense potential – we can cut tens of TWh and hardly notice it (no loss of welfare or impact on quality of life) 2) Local energy communities can supplement and strengthen the power system and motivate us all to contribute 3) Flexibility in industrial energy consumption plays a crucial role in balancing the power system, allowing room for the new advances we want to achieve. In #SnerpaPower we help make this happen - check us out https://lnkd.in/dsGMETJh 4) Cooperation is key️ – between grid companies, sectors and industries. Working together is essential. ElBits is making progress. The Energikoordinator pilot project is promising, but I wonder why it has not just been implemented across the industry (do we need to pilot everything?). Initiatives like CINELDI/SecurEl and other R&D partnerships are key to drive us forward. 5) Digitalisation will not create green energy, but it’s crucial for enabling the green energy transition. With more and better data, and increased computing power, we have unprecedented opportunities for doing a better job. 6) Protecting and restoring nature is becoming increasingly important , further emphasizing the need to not waste energy and optimize existing resources. Knowledge, awareness and action plans for nature conservation are moving forward and will develop further. 7) Questioning growth? Not many question growth from the big scenes in Arendal, but it is not weird anymore to do so, and it is much more common. As the planetary boundaries are close (or surpassed) , we must think outside the box and take radical steps to consume less resources. What will the effect be on Norwegian industry, energy policies and future developments? How will Norway position itself for the future?

In the US, as per DoE Billion Ton Report, there is a potential for about 1 billion tons biomass and waste recovery per year. Converted into hydrogen that's bout 100 million tons hydrogen, or roughly 1,800 million MWh electricity. In 2024, total renewable electricity generated was 894 million MWh. Obviously not all of this biomass will be converted to hydrogen, and there certainly won't be enough fuel cells at 50% efficiency to convert all of this into electricity, but the point is, there are renewable alternatives to wind and power, to cover at least a (significant) fraction of a sizable energy consumption.

45 MEUR in the bank - for the second time! 💰 Ren-Gas won in EU's first hydrogen auction EUR 45.2 million subsidy grant to advance Finnish green hydrogen economy! 💡 We were among six other successful bidders from total of 132 hydrogen projects across 17 countries. Our winning bid showcases Finland's potential to become a significant hydrogen hub. 🌱 The funding will be part of our second e-methane project located in Lahti and awarded against 122 kt green hydrogen production over a decade. The renewable hydrogen will be further processed into e-methane. 🏗 This achievement paves the way for a final investment decision and construction to begin, realizing more large-scale green hydrogen production in Finland. 🙏 Kudos to the team for the great work! Personally it was rewarding showcasing our competitive capabilities and devising the bid strategy - for the 45.2 million reasons! Next, we'll have to live up to the expectations. 🌞 Solgrid Commissions Mörghult Solar Power Plant in Småland! 🌞   We are thrilled to announce that our portfolio company Solgrid, has successfully commissioned the Mörghult solar power plant just outside Västervik in Småland. This marks a significant milestone in our commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development in the Nordics, contributing to reduced CO2 emissions and to the Paris Agreement.   The Mörghult solar power plant, developed in collaboration with Encavis AG, began construction in May 2023 and is now fully operational, producing an impressive 15.1 GWh of electricity annually. This output is equivalent to the yearly consumption of approximately 755 Swedish households.   Chosen for its optimal solar radiation and proximity to the power grid, the Mörghult site was previously used for forestry. The new solar plant repurposes this land for a productive and sustainable future while preserving areas of significant natural value, including a forest area with valuable oaks in the north-eastern part of the facility.   This achievement underscores Solgrid's expertise and ambitious plans to expand renewable energy in the Nordics. Renewable energy developer OX2 has partnered with the RISE Research Institutes of Sweden and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) to design a biodiversity credit methodology for the offshore wind sector in the Baltic Sea. Under the initiative, co-funded by Nordic Innovation, Aaland Islands environmental startup Under Ytan and Finnish startup Nemo Seafarms will pilot biodiversity monitoring to assess species composition and lay the groundwork for marine restoration activities in the project area. Dubbed Nordic BioBuz, the project will focus on a 600 square kilometre area 15 km off the northern coast of Aaland Islands. Joel Lindholm, CEO of Under Ytan, said this model could apply to other marine infrastructure closer to coastal areas in the future, arguing that legislation is set to play a critical role in boosting demand for credits. "We're seeing an increasing pressure to legislate on offshore wind companies and other marine infrastructure developers. If these firms have some solutions already developed, they will have a strong advantage," he told our reporter Sergio Colombo.
