Well, last month Oura acquired Veri, the Helsinki-based startup behind the metabolic health product of the same name. About Veri: the platform tracks blood sugar levels and helps people improve their metabolic health. With the Veri mobile app, users scan a wearable glucose sensor to get actionable insights and recommendations on nutrition and their lifestyle habits.The Finnish company notes, “We help you stabilize your levels by providing the insight and guidance you need to find the right foods and habits for you.” The acquisition will allow Oura to launch Meals, a metabolic health offering for users to track how the timing of their meals affects sleep, recovery and stress metrics. More VC funding ahead? 🤞 More venture capital ➡️ more funding for innovative companies. As shown in a recent update from PitchBook on European VC fundraising, the first half of 2024 has been challenging for raising new VC funds 📉. This situation is influenced by higher interest rates, which often divert investors towards other asset classes. Hopefully, the coming period (from Q3 2024 through 2026) will see further interest rate cuts, as shown in the attached forecast from IMF, and we will start seeing more money going into the venture space again. 🪴💪

Startup Founders - are you aware of the market trajectory in the funding landscape? I read an interesting report published by PitchBook on European Private equity today. The headline is that European PE deals show signs of recovery, but exits remain low. (see link at bottom of post) They also note a marked decline in growth/expansion funds, indicating a shift toward traditional buyout strategies. Which is definitely something I've noticed in the market. If you are a funded startup founder or hoping to raise funding, it's well worth being aware of this trend and learning more about the different types of investment strategies adopted by investors. What are the opportunities to invest in Frontier tech 🤔 Very much looking forward to discussing this very topic during our LP dinner at Slush with BACKED VC & Google Theres no argument that Web 2, with companies like Meta, Monzo, and Uber, has played a pivotal role in shaping the internet. It also attracted more venture capital and funding, exists, into what is now one of the most dynamic and exciting spaces (bias aside). However, what got investors here won’t get them there. Regardless of where you stand on the decentralised vs centralised debate (open vs closed systems), no one can deny the power of crypto ecosystems to reimagine industries. The journey may have started with finance—Bitcoin creating "digital gold"—which paved the way for stablecoins (see bridge.xyz acquired by stripe for 1.1bn announced just last week), offering a superior alternative for cross-border payments. Much has happened in between, but as predicted, two technologies are now converging. Web3 infrastructure can solve some of AI’s most pressing challenges towards, data, cost of compute or even verification. A fascinating keynote this morning at Slush #Helsinki by Itxaso Araque - Head of GTM at Google on the impact of AI on enterprises. With over 80% of corporates reporting an annual #revenue uptick north of 6%, and considering that over 70% realised returns in the first year of #adoption, there is only one way to go from here — upwards. This not only showcases the ongoing monetary impact of #GenAI adoption on #EMEA #B2B #enterprises, at least from Google's perspective in this case, it also uncovers how tailored #AIAgent enabled solutions are destined to revolutionise the workplace of tomorrow. We are about to witness a perpetual 'change' not only in the tools we leverage at the enterprise level, but also in the skillsets that corporates will look for in the workforces of tomorrow. There will be standard attributes regardless of the type of outcomes needed across departments. Yesterday's skillsets will soon become outdated and will no longer fit the dynamic future that we are headed into. In my view, this will pave way for a 'fresh' category in training and development over the next 3-5 years. As an angel investor, I've had several times to lead a syndicate to be able to invest together with my other angel friends and reach the minimum check size in some investments. Great startups with great traction don't want to bother with a big amount of small investors and can afford bigger investors and thus raise their min check-size sometimes up to 100k or more at seed stage. Legally setting up those syndicates is a very big hurdle and pain point, especially when you start handling multiple of them. Without Venture Capital, the US economy would be half its size (public markets). Europe continues to underappreciate the impact that VC has on the broader economy. Next to its big brother Private Equity, venture capital is often discarded by larger investors as “not in our focus”. And I get it - as an asset class it has to further mature. But already today its impact is massive. According to a recently updated paper of researches at UBC and Stanford, Venture capital-backed companies account for 41% of total US market capitalization and 62% of US public companies’ R&D spending. Among public companies founded within the last fifty years, VC-backed companies account for half in number, three quarters by value, and more than 92% of R&D spending and patent value. In Europe, data is less readily available but various sources point to it being in the 20-25% range - obviously less but still quite significant. What other data do you have on this point?

❌ Fundraising Evolution: (Critical) Trends in Startup Fundraising in 2024 ❌ As the month comes to an end, so does the first fundraising period of the year. After weeks of intensive effort, many players are heading into their summer break. We, too, can look back on a successful first half of the year, noting not only quantitative but also qualitative improvements in our deal flow. Here are three (critical) trends that have caught my attention: 🚩 Notion Instead of Pitch Deck Some founders choose to skip a traditional pitch deck entirely when pre-seed fundraising, opting instead for a notion page that combines a data room with a pitch deck. While the benefits of flexible updates over a static document are obvious, I think it lacks personalization and impact. Much of the valuable information in a pitch deck is conveyed between the lines. 💡 My Tip: Create a small Notion data room together with a short teaser deck for the perfect information basis. 🚩 Variable Round Setup More frequently, fundraising starts without a clear target. Instead, all options are considered throughout the round, adapting based on circumstances and feedback before settling on the most suitable setup. While this flexibility has advantages, I believe every team needs clear goals within a well-defined framework to attract the right partners. 💡 My Tip: Establish a clear framework with a structured timeline to target investors effectively. 🚩 Fundraising as a Team Effort At most of my meetings in recent months, I have always met the entire founding team. From a resource allocation perspective, this is disastrous. It is important to get to know all the key players in a start-up, but all it takes is one in-depth conversation. Otherwise, valuable resources are wasted in the large number of fundraising meetings with various investors. 💡 My Tip: The CEO should centrally manage fundraising. This includes initial meetings, email communications, reference calls and closing. Involve your co-founders only in a detailed deep dive and use their resources more strategically.
