City-of-Helsinki/text-anonymizer for Finnish language is finally out in public! Anonymisation can extend use cases and storage times of some datasets (not all!) without compromising privacy. The tool speeds up the tedious work of cleaning text of direct and composite identifiers. National Science Foundation (NSF) convergence program is super interesting from the European - or Finnish 😊 - point of view! Convergence is an approach to address a real-world problem. Marisa Rinkus from the Michigan State University discussing how teams operationalize convergence at the #ITD24. Cultivating a shared language as a "neutral space" was important for the teams. Methodological integration means e.g. involving each project member at all stages. No separate working packages for different disciplines! (When will we stop this?) I just found a meta study of meta studies in Nature. What is that? Diamond standard? And the topic is what impacts behavior formation the most. The take-away is that Knowledge of the behaviour has a Small impact on behaviour change; Behaviour skill has a medium impact. The only Large determinant of behaviour change is habit. I have been studying Norwegian for more than a year, and recently moved to the B2 group. I have also been contracted by GLÅMDAL INTERKOMMUNALE VOKSENOPPLÆRINGSSENTER IKS to #translate from #Norwegian to #Ukrainian. If you're interested in learning a language as an adult, here are my thoughts 💬 Part 1;) 1) The more #languages you can speak, the easier it is to #learn a new one. If you know languages of the same language groups, it can help you on the early stages, but also, hinder your development to a degree on higher stages. I have a professional proficiency in English and have studied German in school and university (but cannot speak it). Unexpectedly, French has also helped me in studying Norwegian as sometimes older people use logic in constructing numbers that I am familiar with from French. The textbooks also contain random French words that are hard to process for my classmates who don't have a basic knowledge of how to read French. I also have a basic speaking proficiency in Polish (used it in communication with art community while on a poetry residence in Poland). Polish helped with general understanding of language structure in the beginning, and familiarity with the movable "self" part ("I wash myself/Jeg vaske meg/Myję się/Я миюсь") I have also dabbled in studying Spanish at spare time before I came to Norway, based on my interest in the culture. Which moves us to the next point: 2) INTEREST and need in a language. I was never really interested in German, didn't see how and when I can use it, and so, despite studying it for 8 years, I cannot speak it at all, and now what knowledge I had of the language, has been completely replaced by Norwegian words and constructions. I can no longer say "I can not speak German" without a considerable mental effort because Norwegian (jeg snakker) and even French (en peau) words come first. But for a very long time understanding of the German constructions and familiarity with some lexics came to help in learning Norwegian. Unfortunately, I see that Norwegian tries to replace English, too. But I don't allow it, as being able to communicate and lead sessions in English has been my bread and butter for most of my life, and I don't plan on losing it. I was simultaneously fortunate and unfortunate to be placed in a small rural agricultutal Norwegian municipality (kommune) where most people have no desire to communicate in English, for different reasons (the biggest one is that some have not studied it at all. They studied German instead. Another reason being, they have no need for it. Multiple people told me they have never used it after they finished the school and forgot it. Another is, comfort level: "no stress" motto). Unfortunate, because I have felt intensely lonely and excluded here. Fortunate, because I was forced to speak Norwegian and learned it. (The same with Russian in childhood. A Ukrainian-speaking child in Russian-speaking Mariupol). Comment if you want to know more!
