About us
UPM is a responsible pulp producer and one of the world’s leading pulp suppliers. We offer a comprehensive set of hardwood and softwood pulp grades for demanding tissue, specialty paper, board, printing and writing paper and other innovative end-uses to the global market. Our reliability as a pulp supplier is based on our modern and efficient mills, dynamic sales force, local technical support and service, and long-term logistics partners. We operate five modern pulp mills, three in Finland and two in Uruguay as well as sustainable eucalyptus plantations in Uruguay. Our new Paso de los Toros pulp mill in Uruguay started operations in April 2023. With the new pulp mill, our annual production capacity has increased by over 50% from 3.7 to 5.8 million tonnes. Our modern pulp mills are also an invaluable source of wood-based, renewable energy as well as by-products and residues, which are used for innovative bio-products.

🏭 UPM Paso de los Toros pulp mill reached the important milestone of full nominal capacity in the first half of the year! With an annual production capacity of 2.1 million tonnes of eucalyptus pulp the mill has increased our pulp capacity by more than 50%. 🚆Because of the mill’s inland location, the rebuilt and improved railroad connecting the mill to the new deep sea pulp terminal in the port of Montevideo is an essential part of the supply chain. Pulp transports from the mill to the port started this year on the state-owned railroad. 🚢 “We have so far loaded more than 60 ships and delivered pulp to all of our market areas – Asia Pacific region, North America and Europe – and also regularly receive shipments of chemicals for pulp production, such as caustic soda and sulfuric acid.” says Marcos Battegazzore, VP Pulp and Forestry Operations at UPM Uruguay. In collaboration with the Faculty of Agronomy at the University of the Republic (UDELAR) in Uruguay, UPM carried out a decade-long project examining various afforestation scenarios to evaluate how vegetation evolves in areas once planted with eucalyptus or pine species. The studies showed that natural grasslands exhibit a remarkable capacity for regeneration after afforestation, often recovering faster than after intensive agricultural use. “These results underscore the potential for balance between productive forestry and ecological restoration. The natural grassland’s capacity to regenerate shows that productive land use and biodiversity can go hand in hand,” says Iván Grela Gonzalez, Biodiversity Coordinator at UPM Uruguay. 🌳 Uruguayan landowners María Marta Albicette and Carlos Viola have transformed their family land into a thriving forest plantation through UPM's Fomento Programme. 🌳 Their 15-year journey together showcases how collaboration between local landowners and forestry companies can create lasting value while supporting sustainable development and local communities. 🌳 “We thought of our forest project as a great savings account: someone would take really good care of our assets,” says Albicette. Her partner Viola adds: “As a business, the first rotation period was profitable for us. We wouldn't have been able to plant the forest on our own, so working with one of the world's largest forestry companies was a good option.” Read the full article from the link in comments. 💡UPM’s Fomento Programme Established in 2005, UPM’s Fomento Programme has grown alongside Uruguay’s rural producers, sharing with them our knowledge and experience of tree plantations, and providing them with the most appropriate technology and high quality tree seedlings for successful and harmonious incorporation of forestry in their business activities. Thanks to this relationship local producers can access an additional tool for income diversification – while also taking advantage of the services that forestry work provide to the rest of their agricultural operations, particularly shade and shelter for livestock. #fibresforthefuture #upmpulp #upmuruguay #upmeuca

Last week our UPM Uruguay team together with EVP of UPM Fibres Aki Temmes had the distinct honour of hosting the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and her delegation at UPM’s port terminal in Montevideo. The visit was a great opportunity to showcase the pulp specialised port terminal which is a focal part of our recent investment in the Paso de los Toros pulp mill that transformed UPM into the third biggest market pulp supplier globally. Naturally the delegates also talked about pulp, its versatile end uses and the many other solutions that a sustainable forest industry can offer to replace fossil consumption. #Fibresforthrefuture #upmpulp #upmuruguay #upmeuca
