Low code occupancy rate monitoring - in real time. Here's Sunday afternoon's worth of work for demoing an integration between Quuppa Intelligent Locating System and Thingsboard IoT platform. Internally, the Quuppa for Enterprise RTLS platform has been using websockets from its inception, but recently, we also released customer facing websocket connectors. With them, you can do super fast and simple, yet secure integrations to third party systems. Now, I've been a fan of Thingsboard IoT platform for some time (what's not to like - endlessly customizable, great documentation, liberal open source license and a smart cloud strategy) so it was time to roll up my sleeves and put together a small showcase to demonstrate capabilities of Thingsboard (as well as Quuppa for Enterprise of course). I might have been able to put this together with Quuppa and Thingsboard only but since websocket server seemed to be part of Thingsboard Platform Integrations (part of their Professional Edition), I figured I can also experiment with a simple external rule engine that serves as a middleware consuming websocket data, keeping count of current zone occupancy rates and pushing occupancy rate updates to Thingsboard via HTTP POST. For demo purposes, our (simulated) employees are rather active in the above video, but in real life, zone changes between different meeting rooms and public working spaces would happen quite rarely compared to positional updates (@3Hz when a tag's moving) during the course of a regular office day. In the video, I first start a Quuppa websocket connector, change the system to display our real-time map as shown in the lower part and then switch to the Thingsboard dashboard window that visualizes occupancy rates of the zones on the same office map. The middleware logic was really simple and trivial. To be honest, the most amount of "code" and time I spent getting the Thingsboard Custom Image Map widget to work for my purposes. It has some annoying ideas about relative coordinates inside an image map. Would be better to write a completely custom indoor map widget for Thingsboard but I'll leave that for another time. Given that there's no (e.g. MQTT) message brokers or even databases in between, latency is minimal as I suspected it would be, in the order or 100-200 ms or less and it would likely hold true in a real world environment as well. Naturally, more serious occupancy rate monitoring would probably require pushing data to some back end BIM/office management system rather than just provide visuals, but it's cool that you don't have to do any extra work to make Thingboard widgets update themselves - once you've provided the data, the integration is done!

Rise of the MQTT MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport) is a lightweight, publish-subscribe messaging protocol that has evolved over 25 years to become a cornerstone of the Internet of Things (IoT). First drafted in 1999 to monitor remote oil pipelines, MQTT was designed to enable efficient communication over unreliable networks and with resource-constrained devices. Its simplicity, low power consumption, and minimal bandwidth requirements have made it widely popular. Quuppa hopped onto the MQTT bandwagon a few years ago since it gave us a way to connect data from factory floors and warehouses securely and reliably to data centers. In production environments, secure connectivity is a must. Running MQTT over websocket, we are able to make outbound connections that penetrate through firewalls and proxies securely. In the latest Quuppa for Enterprise release, we've added mutual TLS authentication as shown in the video. Not that we can take all the credit as our MQTT publisher is using Eclipse Paho, a well known MQTT client. As a testament to pervasiveness and solid standardization work of the MQTT protocol, Quuppa MQTT is tested to work at least with Mosquitto, EMQX, Thingsboard's embedded MQTT broker, ActiveMQ Artemis and RabbitMQ. Note on the last two, they are originally AMQP brokers with MQTT support added to the more recent versions. We only support MQTT v5 because an RTLS system may produce a lot positional data - topic aliasing and shared subscriptions are some of the notable performance features of MQTT v5.

🎄 𝐐𝐮𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐚 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲! 🎄 Last Thursday evening, we gathered for our annual Quuppa 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲, and what a night it was! The festive spirit was in full swing as almost everyone joined, except for our US team, who were enjoying their traditional Thanksgiving celebrations. The evening was full of laughter and excitement, with a variety of games to keep everyone entertained. However, UNO and the lively "Five-Cups Club" quickly became the highlights of the night. And of course, no Quuppa party would be complete without a visit to the sauna – an absolute must in our celebrations. A huge thank you to everyone who joined and helped make the event so special. These moments of connection and laughter remind us of the strength of the 𝐐𝐮𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 as we wrap up another amazing year! 💫 #Quuppa #ChristmasParty #TeamSpirit #FestiveSeason #WorkCulture
