Who taught you to behave this way? If she could see you, what would mama say? Think that that’ll get you what you want? Think that everybody else is in your way Have the nerve to say you disagree You’re sitting pretty without a single need Can’t see past yourself from that perspective They aren’t issues if they don’t affect you. I don’t think so, I don’t see it that way No I don’t think so, I don’t see it that way
2.
That love was so stale Chipped a tooth in it Chipped a tooth in it But you didn't seem to see Pity’s sake Double take I shake you till you are awake You just lie there While the world’s weight crushes me I’ve got a secret And it’s eating me alive You want me for forever I think I want a new life I am emotionally digging To the other side of The world with only a spoon Make a choice after months and months And somehow It still feels too soon How you gonna blame me When you could’ve done something about it? It’s not right How you gonna marinate me In shitty things overnight? Wishin’ that there was a way For me to surgically stake A sign right through my heart Flashing neon, Gone fishing Proceed with caution Do not enter, Pass with care Not for sale, Buyer beware Rough road, Dead end Out of office, Wrong way Detour, Railroad crossing Hot price, Clearance No passing, Private property Horse crossing, Buy one get one We buy gold, Live nude girls girls girls Construction, Liquidation Grand re-opening Grand re-re-opening Grand re-re-re-opening Everything must go How you gonna blame me When you could’ve done something about it? It’s not right How you gonna marinate me In shitty things overnight? You’ve got punisher’s lust I’ve got Mucho Mistrust
3.
You know how much I love you Don’t make me say it Don’t make me prove it to you I will not do it I wanna steal you away For just a minute You keep on running from me I’ll catch up to you. Just gotta meet you Just gotta meet you It’s non-negotiable It is a must I gotta tell you about The life I planned for us I think that once you know me It’ll make sense to you Then you’re gonna see You’re gonna love me too Just gotta meet you Just gotta meet you I fell in love so fast Right when I saw you I knew we’d hit it off So glad I found you All that’s left to do now Is be around you You can’t deny these feelings When it surrounds you You’ll see You’re gonna love me! You’ll see you’re gonna love me!! Just gotta meet you

Psycho 02:58
Pulled the rug from underneath me How was I supposed to know? You changed your mind about me You made me look psycho!! You don’t know a thing about me Still you decide to go You changed your mind about me You made me look psycho!! Invest in me, casually Risk free cruelty casualty Exorcize your demons on me Then you decide to go I know everything about you You are a real psycho I don’t have time for your petty bullshit I got mine, now you want a piece of it? I won’t share it You never cared about me Maybe I would If you beseech me I don’t have time for your petty bullshit I got mine, now you want a piece of it? I won’t share it You never cared about me Maybe I would If you beseech me

Well Song 02:22
My well of patience has run dry Don’t even try to ask me why The fault is no one else’s but mine Don’t think I haven’t tried and tried My well of self esteem has run dry You wouldn’t even understand why No bandwidth, all I do is cry Don’t think I haven’t tried and tried Keep fishing down there but I come up dry Why should I bother to even try? Keep fishing down there but I come up dry Why should I bother to even try? Keep fishing down there but I come up dry

Más O Menos 02:00
There’s two sides To each god damned story Whoever tells their’s first Is the one that gets the glory You try so hard To be the bigger person And you get treated Like you’re even worse than All the reasons That you wanted to leave Oh what a tangled web It is that we weave Whatever helps you sleep I decided to assert myself After I lost all my sense of self I let myself get absorbed into you Mostly couldn’t help it But you wanted me to I have good days, I have bad days I have days in between When I say I'm so-so You don’t know what I mean I hope you had a good time On your sympathy tour Hope you found everything That you were looking for ¡No me hables! ¡No escuchare! Yo soy más o menos Yo soy más o menos So so más o menos
7.
Once you have that thought It can’t be undone Every day I’m weighing Pros and cons A cocktail of emotions And you’re grade A devotion, honey I know it’s closing in But still I keep on running My mind is Long Island Iced Tea Your mind is sunken cost fallacy One foot in One foot out Red hot kettle on the backburner Someone put it out And that thought Can't be unthought Worse on half-off (You got it) Like it or not My mind is Long Island Iced Tea Your mind is sunken cost fallacy. Oh my mind is Long Island Iced Tea Oh my mind is sunken cost fallacy

Sun is pouring Venetian blinds to flooring Long wrought the warmth of a bed Through your snoring Habits slowly mooring Indulge distraction instead Skin is peeling, never share your feelings Weakness comes from those revealing Ulcer forming Wake up every morning Drags me out of my bed Hit the ceiling Beanstalk slightly kneeling One too many leaves to shed Chest is reeling, never shake this feeling Feeling through the vines And you’re understanding lines You’re rehearsing all the time A character expected by And it’s always intertwined With a fear to hide behind And it’s of your own design But the self is undermined Wanna return to a time Where the actions taken by And the space that’s taken by Is unchecked because nobody gives a shit And it’s always intertwined With a fear to hide behind And it’s of your own design But the self is undermined Greatest gen Marlboro men Respect real gents just playing pretend Cowboy man Live off the land But it’s not what it appears to be It’s not what it appears to be

Ponies 04:32
Wanted to win big I went all in Bet all I had Each egg in basket On the ponies If you wanna win big You go all in Bet it all, all you got On the ponies Losing sleep Lying through teeth Tearing house down You weren’t around Stop when I want It’s not a problem Swear I’ll win big I’ll deal you in On the ponies If you wanna win big You go all in Bet it all, all you got On the ponies If you wanna win big You go all in Bet it all, all you got On the ponies Ooh, ooh, win big I’ll deal you in

Cause of death is Indecision Can’t stop the bleeding If there’s no incision I can’t make up my mind for the life of me If you’re a beacon of joy or of strife for me Gotta be honest it fucks with me Yeah it fucks with me Was I moth-to-light-ed Or life-long indicted Whatever it was wasn’t requited
11.
Sap 03:13
Chewed up, spat out Left out unaccounted for Tally up all those days You kept me at bay Bad taste left in my mouth Crept in when you went away I feel like the wind could knock me over Old news to you, still hard to chew; it’s over My clothes wear me My dreams have been scaring me Tears roll to my chin from my eyes Can’t keep those damn things dry these days I feel like the wind could knock me over Old news to you, still hard to chew; it’s over They don’t know about us They’ve never heard of us Guess that’s what love is like Guess that’s what love is like I can’t keep tabs on you But I still think about you Guess that’s what love is like Guess that’s what love is like
12.
Too Soon 04:33
I tried my best to meet you halfway But my head was cloudy that whole day I’m losing sight of the target I don’t know if I ever even wanted to see you Just felt way too soon To see you It’s way too soon You tried to scold me for not managing my time greatly I, of course, agree Seems cruel to me I made a point to say I’m sorry antecedently I’m losing sight of the target I don’t know if I ever even wanted to see you Just felt way too soon To see you It’s way too soon Get off my case Get out my face Give me some space Get off my case I’m losing sight of the target I don’t know if I ever even wanted to see you Just felt way too soon To see you It’s way too soon Seems cruel to me I made a point to say I’m sorry Seems cruel to me I made a point to say I’m sorry Fuck

about

Fake Fruit’s visceral indie rock operates so firmly in the present that it’s transportive and unmooring. The Oakland trio’s songs careen with volatile energy and lead singer Ham D’Amato’s lyrics are enveloped with acerbic humor and resonant perceptiveness. Though their new LP Mucho Mistrust is a sly reference to a beloved Blondie lyric, the title encapsulates both the anxieties of daily life, a bloodless music industry, and global capitalism as well as the clear-eyed skepticism needed to rebel against it. Across 12 propulsively unpredictable tracks, the album is both their most collaborative and most immediate yet.

Following the 2021 release of Fake Fruit’s self-titled debut LP, the band’s personal lives hit a turbulent and transformational period. “There were big life changes and I was so close to boiling over,” says D’Amato. “I left a bad relationship, entered a more stable and loving one, got diagnosed with alopecia, and I'm turning 30 soon too.” This personal upheaval was channeled into the explosive lead single “Mucho Mistrust.” The track is simultaneously disorienting and direct, with clanging guitars from Alex Post, off-kilter drums from Miles MacDiarmid, and D’Amato snarling, “How you gonna blame me / when you could’ve done something about it / it’s not right / How you gonna marinate me / in shitty things overnight.” She explains, “This song was a snapshot of how I got through a difficult year.”

Recorded live at the Bay Area’s Atomic Garden studio with producer Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Home Is Where), the band’s palpable ferocity shines throughout the record. Single “Más o Menos” is searing punk, with buzzsaw guitars and surging bass. It’s a clenched-fist song, one where D’Amato sings, “I decided to assert myself / After I lost all my sense of self.” Later in the track, D’Amato, who is Chicana, sings in Spanish, “¡No me hables! / ¡No escuchare!” While some of these songs deal in heartbreak, they are charged with way bigger themes. “There's also wanting to break up with capitalism and feeling upset about things politically,” says D’Amato.

For the band, these themes are personal. “I'm managing us while I'm in between changing diapers in my day job as a nanny,” says D’Amato. “Everyone in the band still believes in it and is motivated to keep wading through the bullshit.” On this album, they had no choice but to bet on themselves and each other. No track broadcasts their evolution better than the single “Cause of Death,” which morphs from a gorgeous sax-laden banger to something cathartic and anthemic.

As adventurous and righteous as Mucho Mistrust gets, there’s still an inviting core that never takes itself too seriously. From the ripping “Cause of Death,” which self-deprecatingly takes aim at anxiety and indecision, to the searing title track, Fake Fruit imbue their songs with humor and heart. “Our band is fun,” says D’Amato. “My number one coping mechanism for all of life is to joke about it. Even when the album talks about serious things, I am proud of how funny it can be.”
