*Job Description: Cook* *Qualifications:* Ability to read, write and make simple calculations and follow written and oral instructions.
Must have had some formal or on-the-job training in quantity food preparation, in estimating quantities of food needed, in storing food and supplies, in general kitchen management and the principles and requirements of sanitation and safety in handling food and equipment.
Must be able to work cooperatively with others.
Prefer six (6) months paid quantity food preparation experience.
Work experience with diets recommended.
*Responsibilities:* Under the supervision of the Food Service Supervisor: * Prepares and serves various foods, including meats, vegetables, soups, sauces, gravies, salads, desserts, and therapeutic diet items following recipes and methods of preparation.
* Times food preparation to meet service schedules.
* Spaces and times the cooking of vegetables so that nutritional quality, flavor, and appearance are preserved by not having to hold them too long before service.
* Maintain high standards of quality food production, estimate food requirements, and uses portion control.
* Follow menus provided, making changes only with the consent of the Food Service Supervisor.
* Instructs food service aides involved in food preparation or service.
* Prepares and delivers between meal nourishments to designated areas.
* Maintain safety and sanitation standards/requirements.
* Washes and cleans utensils and equipment keeping general work areas clean.
Cleans up after self and performs cleaning duties as assigned.
* Reports repair and maintenance needs to Food Service Supervisor.
* Reports to work on time, in proper uniform to begin workday.
* Takes responsibility for the department in the absence of the Food Service Supervisor.
* Perform any other duties assigned by the Food Service Supervisor or the Community Director.
*Working Conditions:* Works in a clean, well-lighted, well ventilated kitchen.
Must be able to withstand heat while working around stoves and ovens and changes in temperature when going in and out of refrigerated or deep freeze areas.
Must be cautious while working with kitchen equipment to avoid cuts and burns and while working on possible wet and slippery floors to avoid falls.
*Job Summary:* Preparation and service of quality foods for residents and personnel.
As work may be performed under varying degrees of supervision, an individual must be capable of exercising good judgement in utilization of time and materials.
