About us
The Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) is a quasi-governmental entity established under the framework of the Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP). To facilitate the realization of the entrepreneurship development goals set in the government’s Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP), the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, represented by the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing (MoUDHo), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), formulated and introduced an innovative entrepreneurship and enterprise development initiative, namely the Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP), which was officially launched in February 2013. The Entrepreneurship Development Center (EDC) is the implementing entity of the EDP which is administered by the Federal Urban Job Creation and Food Security Agency (FUJCFSA) within the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing (MoUHo). EDC has its headquarters based in Addis Ababa with regional offices in Bishoftu, Hawassa, Bahir Dar, and Makelle. The regional offices serve all cities within the particular region. The programme aims to identify growth-oriented enterprises as well as potential entrepreneurs, unemployed youth and women nationwide and provide them with direct support to enhance their entrepreneurial skills and competencies to establish and operate profitable, competitive businesses on a sustainable basis.

Ethiopia Shines at Global Entrepreneurship Week 2024 with Strong Government Commitment to Entrepreneurship Ethiopia’s celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2024 concluded with a vibrant closing ceremony at the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI), marking a week-long tribute to innovation, entrepreneurship, and the nation's growing entrepreneurial spirit. Presided over by Her Excellency Muferiat Kamil, Minister of Labour and Skills, the event showcased the government’s unwavering commitment to building a dynamic and inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem. In her speech, Minister Muferiat celebrated Ethiopia’s remarkable progress over the past three years, noting the government’s continuous efforts to nurture an environment that supports rapid entrepreneurial growth. Dr. Hassen Hussen, CEO of EDI, highlighted in his speech that since 2014, EDI has been leading GEW celebrations in Ethiopia, hosting initiatives that inspire innovation, foster collaboration, and connect entrepreneurs with essential resources. This year’s GEW saw an impressive lineup of events, including panel discussion, training programs, policy discussions, and networking sessions. These activities attracted a diverse group of participants—entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers—fostering meaningful exchanges and partnerships. Based on Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) Ethiopia was proudly ranked 10th globally and 2nd in Africa for GEW-related activities, with more than 190 events held across the country, further solidifying its position as a hub for entrepreneurship. The closing ceremony also honored four outstanding entrepreneurs with prestigious awards, recognizing their contributions and resilience in the business world: • Promising Female Entrepreneur of the Year: Rahel Tsegaye • Promising Entrepreneur of the Year with Disability: Derese Tesfa • Promising Young Entrepreneur of the Year: Behailu Seboka • Promising Refugee Entrepreneur of the Year: Sahar Fuad A highlight of the week was a bustling exhibition at EDI’s headquarters, featuring over 50 exhibitors, which provided a platform for networking, collaboration, and showcasing cutting-edge innovations. The success of GEW 2024 underscores Ethiopia's dedication to promoting entrepreneurship as a powerful driver of economic growth, job creation, and social progress. As Ethiopia continues to pave the way for a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem, GEW 2024 stands as a testament to the nation’s forward-thinking vision and its ongoing efforts to empower entrepreneurs from all walks of life. #GEW2024 #EDI #Entrepreneurship #Ethiopia #MoLS #innovation #GEN
