Undergraduate Program

Undergraduates within ESS have five degree options, all of which provide core knowledge, problem-solving skills, and field and technology experiences that are important assets in any career. Students can pursue a Bachelor of Science degree with four different options, or the Bachelor of Arts in Earth and space sciences.

Graduate Program

The Department offers programs of graduate study leading to the degrees of Master of Sciences (MS) in both our Research Program and our Applied Geosciences Program, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in our Research Program. PhD students can elect to pursue a Data Science Option. The department also participates in the Astrobiology graduate program and the Program on Climate Change, through which students can pursue a dual-title PhD in Earth and Space Sciences and Astrobiology and/or a Graduate Certificate in Climate Science (GCeCS), respectively.

What can you do with an ESS degree? A lot!

The broad, interdisciplinary field of earth sciences offers careers in many areas, including resource management, environmental protection, urban and rural planning, and geotechnical consulting. An ESS degree equips students with analytical skills, problem solving skills, communication skills, experience in teamwork, and solid grounding in science – all valuable in today’s job market.

ESS graduates are highly recruited with excellent placement in educational and research institutions, government agencies, and private sector businesses and corporations.
