The mission of the Department of Earth and Space Sciences is:
- To advance fundamental scientific knowledge of the Earth and other planets, involving processes, origin and history, in areas including the interior, the surface, the cryosphere, and the biosphere, as well as the atmosphere and space environment.
- To provide challenging and supportive learning experiences that ensure students understand the scientific process and its role in the production of knowledge, and that prepare students for successful careers — whether in the further advancement of Earth sciences knowledge as researchers, the dissemination of knowledge through teaching, or the application of knowledge to address practical challenges.
- To engage with society to increase science literacy, to inform public policy related to environmental stewardship, and to provide key education and services related to geological hazards and resource management.
- To increase access, and to reduce barriers to participation and retention, in the realization of this mission.
