If we are headed for exceeding 1.5 degrees of global warming , with 2.7 degrees the current trend target, and the actions of the COP's not reducing overall emissions , then the importance of the UK's National Adaptation Programme to Climate Change (NAP3) becomes even more important. Panorama have joined the debate on smart meters, billed as a north south divide this was more about a lack of common sense decisions. Thinking has become fixed on the current approach and a fresh approach is required. Add in the NESO clean power report indicating 90% penetration is required and we really must do better to deliver this critical enabling technology. How Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) utilise the collective power to accelerate the energy transition 🌱 In recent pots Sarah & I have explained that our current, traditional energy grid has disadvantages and outlined the need for a smart grid. Among other reasons these two points stand out: 1️⃣ The energy grid has to provide enough green energy ALL THE TIME to become fully independent from fossil energy sources 2️⃣ The German energy grid has a frequency of 50Hz that has to be consistent, making it difficult to react to regional differences in renewable power generation Big renewable power plants make tackling all these issues very difficult. But what if we would combine the power of a lot of small power plants, lets say private households with solar systems 🤔 Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) describe the digital connection of various distributed energy resources (DERs) to one #energy resource. These energy sources can include, amongst others, private households' #PV systems, #battery storage solutions, solar parks, and wind parks. The #VPP leverages complex prediction models to make smart decisions and also reacts to current situations in real time. For this, the VPP receives information about every DER in real time and controls these units accordingly. The collective of energy resources acts as one smart resource in order to tackle the mentioned challenges at the grid level and be beneficial for the individual resource owners. Let’s see how this could work: 1️⃣ Challenge of always producing enough renewable energy Renewable energy sources struggle to produce enough power constantly around the clock. However, a VPP could unload all the energy of batteries in all the households that are part of the VPP in the morning when there is a huge demand for in the grid. During noon it loads these batteries again. If one household needs more energy, the energy from a different household that currently does not need as much can be used. 2️⃣ Challenge of regional differences in renewable power generation Due to the distributed characteristic of a VPP, it can compensate for regional inconsistencies in the grid. If it is not as windy in the north, the VPP can smartly increase the production of e.g. biogas. Overall, it is the constant holistic, interconnected approach that makes a VPP so beneficial. For individual resource owners, it can also be beneficial to join a VPP. As the VPP controls more energy, it can participate as a bulk producer (German: Großproduzent) in the energy market via direct sales (German: Direktvermarktung). This allows for better conditions and compensates for the downsides, like unloading the private battery, to ensure overall grid stability. Overall, VPPs are a promising concept for enabling a transition towards green energy. The first VPPs have been realised in Europe, and it is certain that more will follow.

Breaking news on low carbon and the Labour Manifesto …… Key strategies include: - Introducing a carbon border adjustment mechanism to protect British industries and meet climate objectives. - Ensuring the institutional framework supports reaching net zero and meeting carbon budgets. - Mandating UK-regulated financial institutions to implement credible transition plans aligning with the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement. ### Heat Pumps and Low Carbon Heating Support the widespread adoption of low-carbon heating solutions, including heat pumps, through: - Offering grants and low-interest loans under the Warm Homes Plan to support the installation of heat pumps and other low-carbon heating systems. - Ensuring private rented sector homes meet minimum energy efficiency standards by 2030. ### Solar PV To expand solar power usage, Labour intends to: - Triple solar power capacity by 2030 as part of the mission to deliver clean power. - Provide support through the Warm Homes Plan for solar panel installations. - Deploy more distributed production capacity through the Local Power Plan, partnering with local authorities and cooperatives for community-based solar projects. ### Insulating Homes Labour's manifesto highlights a significant focus on improving energy efficiency in homes through: - Investing an extra £6.6 billion over the next parliament to upgrade five million homes, aiming to reduce bills and fuel poverty. - Providing grants and low-interest loans for insulation and other improvements. - Working with combined authorities, local, and devolved governments to roll out the Warm Homes Plan. - Ensuring that no one will be forced to replace their boiler as a result of these plans. ### Details on the Warm Homes Plan The Warm Homes Plan is a cornerstone of Labour's strategy to improve energy efficiency in homes. This beginner’s guide to the EU ETS aims to build knowledge and understanding of the European Union’s carbon market for civil society organisations who have little or no prior experience with EU climate policies, including in countries neighbouring the EU. It provides introductory knowledge on how the EU ETS is designed and how it functions. New Blog: It's the cap, stupid. With the UK Government currently consulting on how to integrate #CDR into its compliance carbon market (the #UKETS), Luca Taschini and I examine the most likely options for setting the cap. This may seem esoteric or technocratic, but the cap is particularly crucial to the functioning of an ETS, as it directly affects overall market dynamics. This warrants a deeper a look at the most likely options for setting the cap and the trade-offs they entail, including the impacts on gross and net emissions, impacts on price and impacts on revenues. At COP30 next year, the next round of Nationally Determined Commitments (NDCs) are due and governments must raise the climate ambition level if we are going to limit the impacts of climate change. The good news, according to the Energy Transitions Commission, is that overall ambition could almost triple. NDCs are pledges by governments to reduce national emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change, submitted every five years. Current NDC targets (if fully implemented) are expected to only deliver ~6 GT of CO2 mitigation per year by 2035. If the next round of targets reflected current technology progress and national, sectoral and COP28 commitments, the NDCs could deliver ~18 GT of mitigation, putting the world on a 2C trajectory by 2035. These NDCs are critical as ambition encourages action. Industry’s response to these targets is a primary driver of the transitions’ success as they accelerate deployment and drive down costs. Higher ambition NDCs will provide certainty, unlock investment and accelerate technology deployment. The ETC’s recent report “Credible Contributions: Bolder Plans for Higher Climate Ambitions in the Next Round of NDCs” provides evidence that big shift in ambition levels is possible, and that backing NDCs with detailed transition plans can unlock investment and industry action to achieve these targets. Great to catch up with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) team last week (Cathrine Armour & Barbara Sanderson) at both the 👉 #RBEU 👉 Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) CSO forum. We discussed the various methodologies used in Earth Blox to solve #TNFD Data Deluge. There is no 'lack of data'. The opposite is true. Companies are facing a mountain of data types when it comes to reporting under the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). With a plethora of datasets available, selecting the right ones for the right use cases can be overwhelming. There are methods which involve using multiple data sources that complement each other, painting a more comprehensive picture of a company's nature-related risks and opportunities. By leveraging various datasets, companies can strengthen their TNFD disclosures in a few ways: 👉 Reduced Bias: Dependence on a single dataset can lead to skewed results. Convergence reduces bias and fosters a more holistic view. 👉 Increased Credibility: Combining data sources strengthens the credibility of your reporting. 👉 Improved Actionability: Different datasets can reveal hidden patterns and insights, leading to more targeted actions. Remember, the TNFD framework is still evolving. A convergence approach allows companies to adapt to future requirements while ensuring robust reporting from the get-go. Rubric “We need more ESG standards” :) Welcome EU Green Deal overview from Andreas. The EU Green Deal is like a big plan with over 150 rules to help Europe become greener, cleaner, and more sustainable. It covers everything from reducing pollution to using energy more efficiently. Here’s why it matters (and no, it’s not “too much”): Why So Many Rules? (Because we need it:) 1️⃣ Fairness for Everyone Imagine if some companies tried really hard to be eco-friendly while others didn’t bother at all. That wouldn’t be fair, right? These rules make sure everyone plays by the same rules so the planet benefits. 2️⃣ Attracting Money for Green Ideas Going green is expensive, and governments can’t pay for everything. These rules help investors know which companies are truly eco-friendly so they can put their money into green projects. More money = more progress! 3️⃣ Not Just Europe These rules don’t stop at Europe’s borders. Other countries look at them and create their own green rules too. Plus, some EU rules even apply to companies outside of Europe. It’s like setting an example for the rest of the world. What’s Next? The next step is making sure these green rules also help businesses stay competitive. We need to figure out how to go green and stay strong economically kind of like training for a marathon while still winning races along the way. Bottom line: The Green Deal is a big effort to make the planet healthier while making sure everyone does their part. It’s not “too much”, it’s what we need to build a greener future for everyone and not dye from environmental response on humans activities.

Informal #waste workers (#wastepickers) make a huge contribution to the global #circulareconomy, collecting more than 100 million tonnes of waste each year, mainly in the #GlobalSouth where #wastemanagement systems are lacking. Preliminary modelling carried out by me and my colleagues (Josh Cottom and Costas Velis) at the University of Leeds, indicates that the efforts of waste pickers have a major impact on #plasticpollution - reducing the mass of 'at risk' #plasticwaste by 31 million tonnes every year. Yet this cohort of entrepreneurs are often stigmatized and marginalised by mainstream society, receiving little recognition or enumeration for the valuable contribution they make to society and the #environement. Our position paper published today (with colleagues Ieva Rucevska an Maria Tsakona), calls for greater visibility for informal waste workers to ensure that they are properly recognised for their work. Specifically we call for: - Legal recognition of informal waste workers and the benefits that they bring to the economy, society, and the environment - Requirement for national statistics institutes to obtain, analyse and report data on informal waste workers activities - Inclusion of informal waste workers as an occupational category in national censuses and surveys - Enablement of informal waste workers to self-enumerate their activities, facilitated by waste picker membership or advocacy organisations Our work, partly funded by Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation and managed by GRID-Arendal, encompasses a systematic review and the development of a new method to quantify informal waste sector activities, developed with our colleagues at Doko Recyclers and CREASION in Nepal - specifically, we thank: Bhuwan Chalise; Pratik Bajracharya; Rejisha Maharjan; Sapana Sharma; Ghimire Yunish; Sabina Budhathoki. I have been saying this for a long time now. Politicians generally (and I include all parties in this) do not have a technical understanding of the current status of energy transition technologies. There are issues with all of the energy transition paths we have today and the biggest issue is cost. The Chinese are playing western governments for fools - the Chinese government is developing their energy infrastructure with a mix of wind, PV and, yes, fossil fuels (including coal fired power plants). This means that they will maintain a strong energy grid while they are artificially pushing down the price of alternative energy technologies to force any competition out of the market. What does this mean for us? Our politicians are forcing us to adopt immature technologies (that they cannot afford from domestic markets) so will be forced to buy from China - thereby reinforcing the dominance of China. Please, politicians, listen to your own experts in the energy transition and by experts I mean people who have done this and really understand the issues. Don't depend purely on academics - they know the theory but they've never "done it". Talk to engineering & energy firms. Be prepared to invest in home grown solutions.
