It’s time for the September #salesengineer Book Of The Month and accompanying T-shirt. This month’s read is Unlocking Presales Success by Sherri Mazza. Sherri has been around the SE ecosystem for a while, with great major account expertise from companies like Oracle, VMware, and Sun Microsystems. Her book encapsulates all those experiences and is a fantastic repository of ideas and processes for major and strategic account SEs. In the 2005-15 timeframe, especially in EMEA, the form of account strategy Sherri describes was extremely popular in some large software and hardware companies. Sherri has taken concepts like “The Art of The Possible,” added some flavoring from The Challenger Sale, and created Insight Selling. Although it’s not the revolutionary new sales concept laid out in the book, if you are responsible for creating a TAP—Technical Account Plan—this is a fabulous framework to get you started. The first few chapters contain many “you should do this” statements without telling you HOW to “do this.” Then, the book picks up pace and becomes more prescriptive. I’d recommend it for any SE or SE team engaged in Major Account Planning who are struggling with a “sales-oriented” methodology and need something more relevant to the SE. Remember the 7Ps - Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance! The t-shirt returns to basics in that we should all be proud of the profession. I read far too many posts on LinkedIn downplaying the capabilities or organizational power of the SE. They are wrong. SEs are the oil that makes sales engines run smoothly. (Even if we drive electric cars, they still have transmission and hydraulic fluid!) Now, a question for the #salesengineer group: How do you do Major Account Planning? Do you create your plan in conjunction with sales, or are you just a small subset of what the sales team creates? All links are in my first comment.

Well you all know if I'm sharing the #Forbes Top Employers list, #Microsoft has to be on it 😀. Respondents were asked whether they would recommend their company to family or friends, and to rate it on such criteria as salary, talent development and remote work options. Participants could also rate companies they knew through their own industry knowledge and through friends and family who worked there. And Microsoft ended up on top of the list. Every day's a school day. I was fortunate to be invited to spend the afternoon at Dell Technologies Forum "AI Edition" last week. Whilst all the speakers and panelists were excellent and covered important and entertaining themes, it was John Roese who really landed the most powerful points for me. After describing how he and his team had tackled AI transformation on a sub set of the hundreds of use cases in Dell's business, he went on the summarise five requisites for a successful AI factory within an enterprise. I only wish I had written them down, assuming I could catch them later in a video if I went hunting for it. Fortunately the tenacious marketing team at Dell landed the video my inbox today, Otter.ai watched it whilst I worked on some personas and hey presto, here's the five. 1. A standardised, rule-based chatbot 2. A coding assistant 3. A content engine 4. An agentic framework(for distributed AI processing) 5. A fine-tuning infrastructure Roese explained that by implementing these five capabilities, organisations can deploy and scale various AI projects more efficiently, rather than building bespoke solutions for each use case. He didn't suggest that it's been easy to implement Dell's AI factory; it did sound possible and pragmatic.
