Company´s CEO remarked that #NuclearPowerPlants can supply #CleanPower 24/7 as data centres required, emphasized that lifetime extensions for existing reactors in #Europe were “technically” possible and there was “no reason" for governments to block them, and mentioned the construction of #SMRs as a potentail option to deliver greater volumes by the turn of the decade...

🇪🇸☢ Spain's energy future just got a boost. The Trillo nuclear power plant received a 10-year license renewal. This is a big deal for Spain's energy sector. Spain has been shifting towards solar and wind energy. The focus has been on meeting environmental goals and public sentiment. Despite this, the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) has approved Trillo's operating license extension. Located in Guadalajara, Trillo will celebrate 40 years of operation in 2028. It will then enter Long-Term Operation (LTO) status. The approval came after the operator met all safety requirements. The CSN did a thorough review of the plant's safety conditions. They also gave a positive report on the radioactive waste and spent fuel management plan. Other plants have also received extensions. These include Asco (2 GW), Vandellos 2 (1 GW), Almaraz (2 GW), and Cofrentes (1.1 GW). This extension is crucial for Spain's energy future. Image by: CSN, Trillo

"Grids for speed" -study highlights that Europe is on an ambitious path of decarbonisation: • Reliable and resilient electricity supply has a massive societal value that far exceeds the cost of implementation. The distribution grid must be central to energy policy and system design, not an afterthought. • The distribution grid should develop at the speed of other societal mega shifts, such as decarbonisation, electrification and digitalisation. • Electricity grid reliability and resilience are critical in an increasingly electrified society, where electricity will make up 60% of all energy demand, compared with just 20% today. • €67 billion investment annually is needed to 2050 is needed to deliver a distribution grid that will enable the energy transition. Electricity Market: Pyrolysis for Energy Generation: Harnessing Municipal Waste for Sustainable Power By: Gil Alberto Vilanculo Pyrolysis is a process that decomposes waste in an oxygen-limited (hypoxic) environment, operating at temperatures between 400 and 1,000 degrees Celsius. This method is effective for generating electric energy from waste, offering various environmental and operational advantages. During pyrolysis, a small amount of combustion air (15 to 25% of the required amount) is injected into the first combustion chamber to dry the waste and initiate the decomposition process. The pyrolysis gas generated can be burned like liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in a burner furnace. This combustion of the pyrolysis gas generates heat, which can be converted into electric energy through steam turbines or other power generation systems. Pyrolysis presents several advantages over other waste management methods, such as incineration. It produces fewer pollutants, including dioxins and heavy metals, and generates lower amounts of exhaust gas. Additionally, maintenance costs are lower. The pyrolysis system minimizes the generation of dust and carbon black (stoker type: 3,000 to 10,000 mg/nm³, pyrolysis type: 200 to 600 mg/nm³), making it a more environmentally friendly solution. However, it is important to note that pyrolysis may not be suitable for all types of waste and can still produce some harmful pollutants. Despite this, it is considered an efficient and environmentally friendly technique for generating electric energy from waste. Waste can be valorized. From the pyrolysis of municipal waste, several materials are generated that can be used in different applications. Some of these materials include: 1.   Syngas: A mixture of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and other gases that can be used as fuel to generate energy or as a raw material for producing chemicals. 2.   Pyrolysis Oil (Bio-oil): A liquid that can be refined to produce liquid fuels or used directly as fuel in boilers and engines. 3.   Biochar: A solid carbon-rich residue that can be used as a soil enhancer in agriculture, a pollutant adsorbent, or as a fuel. 4.   Tar and Resins: Liquid by-products that can be used in the chemical industry or as components in construction materials. 5.   Ash: The inorganic residue resulting from pyrolysis that can be used as an additive in construction materials, such as cement and concrete. These materials, derived from the pyrolysis of municipal waste, can be integrated into various markets, contributing to waste reduction and promoting environmental sustainability. Could we decarbonize our energy market without battery storage? Definitely we can't. Renewable energies and progressive electrification of our mobility and industries will be a must to reduce our CO2 emissions but, how could we solve the main problem of most of our renewable energy sources which is their intermittence? The only solution will be the massive deployment of utility-scale battery storage systems able to store the energy when it's produced and abundant and to use it when it's needed. There are several types of utility-scale battery storage technologies currently available in the market, including: 1. Lithium-ion batteries: These are the most common type of batteries used for utility-scale storage due to their high energy density and relatively low cost. 2. Flow batteries: These batteries store energy in liquid electrolytes, allowing for scalability, long cycle life and without risk of explosion. 3. Sodium-sulfur batteries: These batteries operate at high temperatures and are known for their high energy density and efficiency. 4. Lead-acid batteries: Although less common for utility-scale storage, lead-acid batteries are still used in some applications due to their low cost. 5. Solid-state batteries: This emerging technology offers high energy density, enhanced safety, and longer cycle life compared to traditional batteries. In addition to the above battery systems, there are other storage systems also available in the market which will be key players during the coming years: 1. Reversed Pumped Storage: Using large dams to store water in elevated ponds and taking advantage of the gravitational potential energy, pumping the water with the renewable energy excess and dumping water through turbines to produce energy when it's needed on its way down. 2. Hydrogen: Producing Hydrogen with renewable energy excess, storing it and using it through hydrogen fuel cells or combusted as renewable gas when it's needed it's also a remarkable solution. Unfortunately, the efficiency of the overall process is low and therefore it's not cost-effective yet. However, this situation could change in the coming years by improving the efficiency of these technologies and decreasing their costs. Each type of storage technology has its own advantages and limitations, the choice of technology will depend on factors such as cost, project requirements, and performance goals and these will keep changing drastically during the coming years due to fast technological progresses. At this point no one can argue that in the very long term the future will be #Renewables... But actually, based on the state of the art for complementary technologies such as #EnergyStorage... The transition to #RenewableEnergy presents a critical dilemma often summarized as "#Batteries or #Blackouts." This phrase captures the challenge of integrating intermittent #renewable sources like #solar and #wind into the #ElectricityGrid while ensuring a stable and reliable #PowerSupply... The "Batteries or Blackouts" dilemma emphasizes the importance of investing in #EnergyStorage technologies, #GridEnhancements, and #PolicyFrameworks to ensure #Renewables can reliably meet growing energy demands while avoiding blackouts. The choice isn't necessarily binary but requires a combination of innovative solutions and strategic planning... IMPORTANT: this is going to take some time, so in the main while we never might forget that nowadays #renewables remain being intermitent so they continue needing back up!!!

The European Commission has approved a €1.2 billion ($1.33bn) Spanish scheme to support investments in the production of renewable hydrogen with an installed capacity of at least 100 MW. Projects to be supported can include the production of renewable hydrogen-derived fuels, renewable hydrogen storage and the generation of renewable electricity. To be eligible applicants should have secured agreements with offtakers to cover at least 60% of the planned production. Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President in charge of competition policy: “This €1.2 billion scheme will enable Spain to accelerate the deployment of renewable hydrogen capacities, in line with the EU Hydrogen Strategy and the European Green Deal. The scheme will also help Spain reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels, while minimising any potential distortions to competition.” "In 2024 the European Commission also approved two German schemes: an estimated €3 billion scheme to support the construction of the Hydrogen Core Network (HCN) and a €350 million scheme to support the production of renewable hydrogen.
