Join us for the Third Edition of the Barcelona Innovation Health Week - A dynamic week dedicated to innovation, acceleration, technology, and transformation in the health sector, and our event: From TRL0 to Hero: The Challenges of Tech Transfer. Event location: Dolors Aleu Room at the Parc Cientific Barcelona on February 18th, 2025 from 10:00-11:30 The discussion will revolve around the key challenges of tech transfer, which includes the knowledge and information gaps not explicitly documented as experience, intuition, and expertise comes often from individuals. Transferring knowledge requires close collaboration, often involving training and mentorship, which can be resource-intensive. The complexity of technology and the intricate systems, processes, and components that may not be easily understood or replicated. The intellectual property (IP) and legal / regulatory barriers, and different incentives: universities, for example, often focus on research and publication, while companies prioritize profit and market application. The bureaucratic delays where the technology transfer process can be slowed by internal bureaucracy, approval chains, and differing priorities, and of course the communication gaps which can create misunderstandings and inefficiencies in the transfer process. Other elements could be market readiness, the uncertainty and risk of new tech, the cost of implementation, funding gaps, regulatory hurdles, ethical and environmental concerns, among many others. The history of human beings is a history of wars, conquests, colonizations and genocides. Spain also has a history of wars, conquests, colonizations and genocides. Of persecution for religious reasons, for being of another supposed race (there is only one race: the human race), for thinking differently, for loving or desiring differently, for defending democracy. It is extremely sad and surprising to see that still in the 21st century hardly anything has changed and to witness the indiscriminate murder of men, women (humanitarian workers, medical staff, journalists...) and children in Gaza and the West Bank (and without this making us forget other conflicts, such as the invasion of Ukraine among others) by a supposed democracy. The university cannot remain silent about this. Teaching cannot only consist of disseminating concepts in a cold and mechanical way, as if these concepts have nothing to do intrinsically with the human being and his nature. It must also be the place where research is carried out, and where future generations are trained to achieve a better future world where justice, peace and human rights prevail. As a teacher and as a Spaniard (whatever that is) and a descendant, surely, of Iberians, Celts, Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Basques, Romans, Visigoths, Jews, Arabs and who knows how many other peoples (I usually joke with my students about that this is one of the reasons why we live longer and why we are more handsome) I cannot but condemn the genocide that is being perpetrated against the Palestinian people and support the statement of the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (although I wish it had gone further). And I strongly support the mobilizations of university students in different countries while I condemn the passivity, if not the shameful support, of their governments, of our governments (with a few exceptions such as South Africa or Colombia). In the future, I don't know if months or years, it will be impossible for us to explain why we allowed it. Studies will be done. We will realize our mistake. But we will not be able to restore life to the men, women and children who have been murdered in the last seven months and are being murdered tonight. The same night that those who are murdering them have sponsored a music festival in a Swedish city to cover the screams of terror and pain and the bombs. #Genocide, #Israel, #Palestine, #EurovisionSongContest2024, #UVa

#VDS24 has been consolidated as one of Southern Europe’s most prominent international tech events and a platform transforming Valencia into a global tech hub. Organized by Startup Valencia, annually gathers the world’s top startups along with the most influential corporates and investors at the unparalleled venue of the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, S. A. This year Fundación de Estudios Bursátiles y Financieros has arranged three VDS side events for the financial ecosystem. If we can’t control AI, at the very least we can control ourselves. Thanks Harvard Deusto Business Review for publishing my latest article on the use of #ai. In it I ask: How can we address the revolution that artificial intelligence is assuming in the work environment without losing what makes us? On Monday, March 4th 2024, Pere Aragonés y Garcia, President of the Generalitat de Catalunya announced the creation of the Fons D´Inversió en Tecnología Avançada (FITA). These are excellent news for the Catalan innovation system, and a pivotal project several years in the making. FITA is a deep tech investment fund backed by public and private capital to energize and propel the Catalan innovation system. The fund is aimed at supporting technological innovation with origin in public Universities and Research Centers. FITA is endowed with 55 million euro, to be executed between 2024 and 2029, with 30 million contributed by the Generalitat de Catalunya, 15 million euro by the European Investment Bank, and 10 million by private investors. The fund will accompany innovation projects aimed at the foundation and growth of spinoff companies based on technology patented and licensed by a research center or university. FITA is a venture-builder fund and will not only provide significant financial support to spinoffs before and after funding, but also provide training to scientists-entrepreneurs, market analysis, matching with a mentor and IP advising. Very importantly, FITA will be the lead investor in the spinoffs funded, solving the traditional problem of the first investor, and committing to recruit additional investment across Europe. The fund will be managed by Grow Venture Partners. Francisco Badia Ortega is the Managing Partner. FITA represents the financial instrument that innovation managers and scientist entrepreneurs have been asking for, and its implementation, a watershed moment for the Catalan innovation system. #deeptech #innovation #startups #scienceequity #catalunya #spain #europe
