Bittersweet moment as the Gastech 2024 co-chairs wrap up the conference. It’s been a great one this year. My takeaway is that the event this year was characterised by a mood of urgency around the need to take action to secure energy supply while balancing that with progress on decarbonisation and #natgas and #LNG is the most effective route to achieving this.

Today marked the 7th British Gas Energy Trust Twentieth Anniversary Roundtable Discussion event. The aim of the round tables has been to gather #evidence and #insight as to what works and what needs to happen next to #alleviate the detrimental impact of poverty and indeed help prevent fuel poverty - with a focus on key groups most affected by it. Today we were in #Leicester and the focus was on #Women and #Families - we were delighted to have Benaifer Bhandari, #HopscotchWomen’s centre, Zinthiya Ganeshpanchan FRSA Zinthiya Trust, Victoria Benson Gingerbread and Catherine O'Kelly British Gas as our keynote speakers and it was a joy to Chair such an insightful group of participants. The conversation honed in on the structural inequality which causes hardship to women and families or the “double disadvantage faced by women and children”. We talked about how the services represented in the room have seen a significant lift in women seeking support, Gingerbread research has found that 87% of income in single parent households is going on fuel and housing there is very little money for other basic necessities such as food, hygiene products and clothing. So what next - it wasn’t just an engaging and thoughtful provoking session- we want it to lead to change. The findings of this discussion together with recommendations from our other consultative round tables are to be published in November - already key themes of #Datasharing, #trust, #communitybased #personcentred support #longtermfunding have risen to the top. Some reflections on last week’s Energy Professionals event expertly facilitated by Eversheds Sutherland Energy and supported by Gerald Eve. First of all, good to see two senior women on the panel in the shape of Gwenllian Elias of BlueFloat Energy | Renantis Partnership and Eleri Davies of RWE. A reflection of the growing numbers of women in the renewables sector with long term industry experience and some significant successes under their belts. Always a pleasure to listen to John Howells of Gerald Eve. I thoroughly enjoyed the historic overview he gave of Wales’s energy industry at Wales Week London last year; he always brings a fresh perspective to the discussion. Here’s what I took away: ·      The local opportunities from floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea could be significant, but port investment, skills and supply chain planning are needed.  ·      Investors need a stable and predictable policy environment. The ‘missed opportunities’ are hard to forgive – no British turbine manufacturer, recent CfD round (in which no developers put forward bids) ‘a failure of policy’. ·      Onshore wind is on the critical path to net zero. It’s the most established, the cheapest, and quickest technology to deploy. By consenting onshore wind projects now, industry can build the skills and supply chain needed to enable FLOW further down the line. ·      Wales is a village, and developers need to collaborate, especially on social value. ·      Infrastructure, some of it big, unappealing to the eye, and not what we are used to, is going to have to happen to meet net zero. There is no way of sugar-coating this. On the critical question of whether Wales could meet its target of 100% electricity consumption from renewables by 2035, the panel were not altogether optimistic. Grid, the slow pace of onshore consents, lack of policy resource (and sometimes an ‘inconsistent’ policy approach), and a lukewarm (putting it mildly) local community, means that developing projects in Wales is just plain hard. #FLOW #renewables #onshorewind #CelticSea #netzero #energytransition #grid

Could community energy reshape the future of the UK’s power landscape? As the Great British Energy Bill approaches the Report Stage in the House of Commons on October 29th, there’s a critical question on the table: should community energy be a core objective? Advocates say embedding community energy in the Bill would strengthen UK energy resilience, reduce reliance on the national grid, and promote local, cost-effective projects. 📢Today Dogger Bank Wind Farm launches one of the largest community investments in offshore wind in the UK - The £25 million community fund will build on the £1 million community fund already invested in the North and North-East of England during the construction phase of the world’s largest wind farm 💨 🧪 🔭🧮The fund will be used to enhance science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education for young people during the planned 35-year operational lifespan of the wind farm, equipping them with the skills to succeed in a net zero world. The investment includes: 👷‍♀️👷Building on the job creation of the existing fund which has supported 2,000+ jobs in the UK - contributing to the 100,000+ jobs needed in offshore wind to meet current national targets. 🎓 Growing the current scholarship programme with 30 scholarships a year for students studying STEM subjects. 📚Helping support young people - with 36,000+ young people across 204 schools having been supported through the existing fund. This includes 62 university scholarships and 87 grants to local community groups! Green energy company ScottishPower Renewables has confirmed #Lowestoft as the long-term home and heart of its UK #offshorewind operations with the acquisition of a new site in the town’s PowerPark – expanding its existing footprint in the town. Charlie Jordan, CEO of ScottishPower Renewables (SPR), said: “Our continued commitment and investment in Lowestoft highlights the town’s role as a powerhouse for the #cleanenergy industry within the East of England region and we’re here to stay.” Ross Ovens, SPR’s Managing Director for Offshore Development and Operations, added: “It’s really exciting that, six years after we put a spade in the ground and built our EA ONE base in Lowestoft, we’re now increasing our footprint, presence and investment in the town. What are the biggest challenges we face on our decarbonisation journey? I've been at the New Statesman Energy & Climate Change Conference today, and there are 2 key challenges I've come away with: 1. Communications needs an overhaul. Net Zero is a confusing term - it implies a trade off, and people think they stand to lose from this trade. Additionally, green jobs evokes grand, alien images, when what we really mean is we need more electricians, plumbers, tradespeople and construction workers (construction has consistently been the largest employer in the low carbon & renewable energy economy since records began in 2014). 2. The planning system is not fit for purpose. The planning landscape (and within that, grid constraints) is the biggest obstacle to accelerating renewable deployment. Renewable energy will reduce our emissions by roughly three-quarters. We also need more public sector planning officers - Labour plans to do this, but their proposed 300 extra officers will barely scratch the surface. But along with these challenges come opportunities. There's plenty of scope to reframe Net Zero and green jobs to help people and politicians (not that they're not people too!) understand the vast benefits on offer by pursuing decarbonisation projects. Loved making these films for E Co. and Mariella de Souza-Baker. We were able to create 15 separate thought leadership films for their YouTube channel from just one day of shooting. Each film was scripted in advance and then people from the company popped in for 30 mins each to film their videos by reading from an autocue and talking directly to camera. A great example of how businesses are using YouTube to establish themselves as industry thought leaders. I love working with Vattenfall and helping UK businesses and solar developers understand how the IDNO business can help them connect their projects to the grid faster and more cost effectively than the DNOs. When I explain how the IDNO business works and people say "really!? so, what's the catch?" I know my job is done, as there really isn't a catch. It's a bit like promoting solar PV just after the feed-in tariff was introduced. Once people understand the benefits and potential savings they rarely look back. Electrifying UK businesses and accelerating the development of the UK grid is essential for the transition to net zero - which makes Vattenfall feel like a highly worthwhile company to be promoting. #impactmarketing #sustainability #purpose
