NEW ARTICLE ALERT - TRANSPORT RESILIENCE AND COVID If you want to know more about urban transport planning, Covid-19 and resilience this is the definitive Special Issue that will allow you to scan through the 'big picture' of the mobility interventions addressing Covid-19 and its numerous transport-related challenges. A truly interdisciplinary, multi-method and international piece of work published by the prestigious CITIES journal. Our editorial with my long-term collaborator Dr Efthimios Bakogiannis (NTUA) is a crystal clear snapshot version of this collection highlighting, we believe, the key messages of 21 excellent research contributions, conveying how you can effectively plan resilient transport systems in times of disruption and emergency. Our conclusions and epimyth are very telling - a single page with emergency and long-term anti-disruption solutions that may also come very handy when preparing our transport eco-systems for the mega-challenge of climate change. 🔝 Good news in terms of digital transformation and automotive sector, with the aim of achieving (in average for Europe) 20 % of GDP in terms of manufacturer industry. Many things to improve, but this is the journey. From the article: "🇪🇸 Spain represents the 8-th biggest car manufacturer in the world (2nd of Europe, besides Germany), with one of the highest rates of vehicles produced per capita (in 2023, around 2.3 M). The country expects 30 billion euros in industrial investment: 25% comes from China Volkswagen's electrification plan in Sagunto (Comunidad Valencia), Navarra and Martorell (Cataluña) represents a third of the total. Moreover, Stellantis is studying an investment of up to 4 billion euros to build its own battery factory in Figueruelas (Zaragoza). Mercedes Benz is deploying its plan to expand and transform its facilities in Vitoria for the manufacture of electric vehicles from 2026, making it a strategic factory for the German multinational seven decades after its arrival in the Basque Country. It is not long ago that stakeholders regretted investing in transport: as recently as in 2018, analysts were criticising "the Spanish AVE (high-speed) network as being a waste of money". In other words: two decades of being a so-called White Elephant (see the article below). That is, until there was more than one operator on the same tracks in Spain - engaging in intramodal competition with each other - which only began in 2021. But how can we be sure that taxpayer money is not “funnelled into a system that doesn’t serve enough customers to be worth the price" (quote from the article below)? The history of the example in Spain shows that a new TEN-T Network could be a good thing, but only if there is a commitment to full market liberalisation on the routes to be built (i.e. impartial ticketing, fair access to rolling stock financing, track access fees at direct cost, no unjustified PSOs). V2X is part of the mobility transition process described by the European Commission by improving road safety. To bring safety benefits to all road users, the technology needs to be open to all modes of transport. Car 2 Car Communication Consortium is actively promoting an inclusive V2X ecosystem approach, which requires an alignment between many stakeholders, such as the automotive and bicycle industries, technology providers and others. As Bosch eBike, we bring in the bicycle perspective, including results from test campaigns, simulations and accidentology. On December 3rd, ARMIS took part in the 3rd edition of the IMT - Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes Cycle of Meetings with the theme “Interfaces: Uncomplicating Mobility” where the O2 Move bring mobility hubs that combine physical infrastructure with technological innovation was presented. 🔋🚏 O2 Move is the result of a Be.Neutral Agenda project, funded by the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Plan.
