North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU)
🤔 Don't assume a phone call is authentic just because they know your name. #CourierFraud often targets vulnerable and elderly people via calls to their landline or mobile telephones from withheld numbers from someone purporting to be a police officer or figure of authority. The criminal then proceeds to inform the victim of fraudulent activity on their bank account and sometimes claims that their bank staff are involved to deter them from contacting the bank another way. The criminal then often directs the victim to attend their local bank to withdraw a large amount of cash and to return home where it will be collected by a police courier for examination – who is actually a criminal associate. Alternatively, the criminal asks the victim to handover their bank card and personal information to that same courier. Work at the #NEROCU continues to pursue fraudsters and bring them to justice, but officers are also determined to make sure the public feel confident and capable of challenging scammers to help catch them in the act and report them in real time. We want to empower victims and raise awareness of the complex scams being used to dupe people out of their hard earned cash. No reputable organisation will mind if you take your time, challenge them, or ask for proof and hang up. If in doubt, speak to someone you trust, drop into your local bank or call the number given on your official bank statement. If you’re sent a link by text or email don’t click it, report it. 📲 For help and advice visit the #ActionFraud website. If you need to report a crime or suspicious activity please speak to your local police force.

CHARITY PARTNER UPDATE: Destiny Rescue 68 Rescued from Human Traffickers at the Nepal Border Border agents stopped traffickers from luring 68 people out of Nepal. Nearly three-quarters of the victims met their traffickers online, mostly on Facebook. The criminals built relationships with their targets and then, after figuring out their needs, offered them romantic relationships, false jobs or even trips to see relatives who lived across the border. Thanks to our border agents, these people will never see what REALLY awaited them on the other side. #trafficking #rescue #freedom #endchildtrafficking #endhumantrafficking #onechildistoomany #rescueupdate #news #businessforpurpose #financingadifference #charitableimpact #purposedrivenbusiness #propurpose #mortgagebrokersydney #endslavery #endhumantrafficking #destinyrescue

Former home minister and Congress MP P. Chidambaram has sharply criticised the National Medical Commission's (NMC) re-revision of the undergraduate forensic medicine curriculum, calling it 'unbelievably retrograde.' The revised curriculum controversially categorises sodomy and lesbianism as ‘unnatural sex offences’ and omits distinctions between consensual and non-consensual queer relationships, rolling back earlier changes mandated by the Madras High Court in 2022. It also omits what used to be a seven-hour course on disability. Medical professionals and LGBTQ+ advocates fear this revision could undo recent progress in inclusivity. The NMC defended its changes, citing the need to adapt to India’s evolving demographics and socio-economic contexts. https://lnkd.in/ejRPdQTw Graphic: Faizan Khurshid/NH #MedicalEducation #LGBTQRights #PChidambaram #ForensicCurriculum #NMCReforms #Congress #NationalMedicalCommission

It seems the UK’s Conservative Party are bound to lose the General Election, regardless of when in the year they call it. Damage limitation is now the name of the game. But, the question remains: who stands to benefit? Will Kingston-Cox argues that despite the Conservative Party's decline, it's misguided to assume all right-leaning voters will flock to Labour under Keir Starmer, as he lacks Tony Blair's broad appeal. Instead, figures like Dominic Cummings, with his new "Start-Up Party," and others like Matt Goodwin, seek to fill the ideological gap with new right-wing alternatives. These developments suggest a fragmented British Right, potentially diluting Conservative support further and inadvertently bolstering Labour, despite Labour not being a direct beneficiary of right-wing voter realignment. #conservatives #reformuk #nigelfarage #mattgoodwin #dominiccummings #unitedkingdom https://lnkd.in/ejREgZKG

The Conservative Party has long been known as the ‘party of defence’, trusted by the public and the military alike to protect the UK’s national interests. But this election campaign, Labour is determined to change that. It is parking its tanks firmly on the Conservatives’ lawn as it seeks to show that in an increasingly turbulent world, the nation would be safer in Labour’s hands. During a day focused on defence, while standing next to 14 ex-military Labour candidates, Leader of the Opposition Keir Starmer announced plans this morning for a so-called ‘nuclear deterrent triple lock’. The triple lock is designed to shore up the security of the UK, its neighbours and partners – particularly NATO – by ensuring the long term viability of the UK’s nuclear capabilities. The lock includes a commitment to construct four new nuclear submarines, maintain a continuous at-sea deterrent, and deliver all future upgrades needed for the submarines to patrol the waters. The focus by Labour on nuclear is no accident. Investment in the UK’s nuclear deterrent is urgently needed – chronic underinvestment and ageing infrastructure have threatened to undermine the effectiveness of this key pillar of the UK’s defensive capabilities. But just as important to this focus on nuclear is Labour’s determination to remedy its own track record on the issue. ✍️Evie Aspinall https://lnkd.in/eJ6ca2Ez

Foreign interference Justice Minister Hon Paul Goldsmith has introduced legislation criminalising foreign interference and strengthening the laws relating to espionage. Minister Goldsmith said “…the reality is that some foreign states are engaging in activities that are deceptive, corruptive, or coercive. These activities are intended to inappropriately manipulate our society or place undue pressure on individuals and our communities.” “These changes are part of ongoing work across government to protect New Zealand and our communities from foreign interference. They also provide a clear message on how seriously we take this issue,” Mr Goldsmith says. The Crimes (Countering Foreign Interference) Amendment Bill will: - Create new offences to specifically criminalise foreign interference, - Update existing offences related to espionage and the wrongful communication of government information for conduct that is likely to prejudice New Zealand’s security or defence. Contact Ross Browne or Tim Hurdle for more information on national security opportunities in New Zealand.

Footage of a British police officer kicking a man at Manchester Airport has sparked widespread outrage and calls for reform, labeled as police brutality. Armed officers used Tasers as bystanders pleaded for restraint. Politicians, activists, and community leaders are demanding a thorough investigation and systemic reforms. The officer has been removed, and the case referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. This incident has reignited debates on policing practices and racial disparities, emphasizing the need for transparent accountability. There's a strong public demand for swift, appropriate action to uphold standards of conduct and human rights. 📜 Under section 1 of the Prevention of Crime Act 1953, carrying an offensive weapon in public without lawful authority or reasonable excuse is a criminal offence. The burden of proof lies with the person carrying it. Simply forgetting about the weapon isn’t a valid defence. Offensive weapons include those made, adapted, or intended for use to cause injury, such as truncheons, broken bottles, and bicycle chains. Certain items, like police batons, are lawful only in specific circumstances. #uklaw #offensiveweapons

Police Stations and interviews can feel like a very hostile environment for an individual. They might have never been inside a police station before, having never been arrested or held in custody. Perhaps they don’t feel able to answer questions, but do have a defence or partial defence they want to place on record. Prepared statements can be prepared prior to attending the police station. In some circumstances, they can be drawn up in our offices rather than in the high-pressured environment of the police station. If you would like expert legal advice to explore options available to you during a police interview, then please contact our team via our website or by calling us on 0207 936 6329. #Solicitors #PoliceStation #Statement #CriminalDefence
