In the last few days, everyone has been talking about #GPT-4o, #Astra, and #VEO —but did you notice the release of #PaliGemma? Google's open-source PaliGemma is based on the SigLIP vision model and the Gemma language model. Unlike the new GPT-4o, PaliGemma isn’t something you can use directly; instead, it's meant for academic research and further fine-tuning based on your needs. The nice thing about it is that fine-tuning is very lightweight and even possible on the free Google Colab plan with a 16GB T4 GPU. With Gemma-2B as its text decoder, I assume PaliGemma will be like CLIP on steroids. There are a couple of metrics available around COCO, but I didn’t have the time yet to take a deep dive into those.
