There's often a disconnect between the problems AI researchers and companies choose to focus on and pressing human needs like homelessness. Some potential reasons for this may include: Profit motives: Many AI advancements are driven by companies seeking to maximize returns, leading to a focus on lucrative business applications. Complexity of social issues: Homelessness and poverty are multifaceted problems that can't be solved by technology alone, making them less appealing targets for AI research. Data and ethical concerns: Working with vulnerable populations raises significant ethical and privacy issues that researchers may be hesitant to navigate. Visibility and prestige: Solving business problems or achieving benchmarks in areas like language modeling often garner more attention and prestige in the AI community. As we advance with AI technology, we have an ever-growing ethical obligation to consider how it can be used to address urgent societal needs and improve the lives of all people, especially the most vulnerable. We must progress first as human beings and not "go back" in terms of humanity and society, thinking that progress means advancing towards "being robots" without real feelings, just the ones useful to show up. This disparity in focus and resources is a double espresso shot – a strong coffee to remind us to critically examine our priorities in technology development and deployment, as well as our choices as humans or the humans we aspire to become. We should understand that everything has a cost, whether in terms of money or our value as people. Not paying with money doesn't mean we don't pay at all.
