Recently, our partner Aristotelis Xenofontos spoke with Trevor Clawson from Forbes about the dynamic startup landscape in Spain— which has expanded beyond Madrid and Barcelona, in a "multipolar innovation ecosystem" 📰 Historically, Barcelona has been Spain’s primary startup hub. Good universities, a strong industrial base, the presence of a government-funded supercomputer, major startup events like 4YFN and a well-established base of 38,000 tech jobs, it’s no wonder the city is seen as a key innovation center. 📍 But Madrid is emerging strongly, particularly in fintech and digital services, attracting €694 million in VC funding last year and outpacing Barcelona’s €582 million. “There is more money in Madrid, but more startups in Barcelona.” Madrid’s edge also lies in housing Spain’s biggest VC funds, providing startups with close access to investors. ⚙️ Beyond these two hubs, investment is spreading to cities like Valencia, Malaga, and Bilbao, creating a “flywheel effect” that’s inspiring new founders and fueling innovation across Spain. Our team has returned from Valencia Digital Summit 2024 (VDS), where we engaged in discussions and networking focused on sustainability, investment strategies, and the Spanish VC ecosystem. Last week, we were invited to CaixaBank DayOne Summit Madrid We participated in a discussion on the impact of AI on product development with two co-founders building in the space: Sergio Gonzalez from Piper and Victor Garcia from NeuralTrust, along with Aristotelis Xenofontos and Sofía Muñoz from our team. 🧑💻 The conversation was highly productive, covering how AI is transforming both product development and building. We explored how AI has shortened the time to market, the pros and cons of founding an AI company outside the U.S., and predictions about which AI sectors are most attractive from an investment perspective. We also discussed where AI-focused startups are likely to evolve over the next five years. 👉 The panelists offered clear advice for the next generation of AI founders: focus on solving real problems, prioritize product over technology, launch quickly, and iterate. 🤝 A big thank you to the organizing committee at CaixaBank DayOne and to the vibrant Madrid startup ecosystem, specially to our fellow panelists from Endeavor Spain, Sergio Furio, Enrique Linares, Juan Pablo Nebrera, Paloma Vila and SpainCap, Juan Teijeiro, Gonzalo Martínez de Azagra, Iñaki Arrola and Ángela Alférez García.
