At #OSSummit, Bitergian Daniel Izquierdo Cortázar, PhD talks with Ning (Willem) Jiang from Byte Dance about cultural differences and what they mean in the context of open source. Five takeaways: 1) Cultural differences are exacerbating the separation of western and eastern open source projects. We need to understand different expectations to bridge the gap. Different people behave in different ways. 2) Cultural barriers to contribution are not obvious to us unless we make an effort to reach out and understand people from other cultures. Inclusion can only happen when done intentionally. 3) Culturally, open source projects are influenced by western values. Trust is often built through contributions and contributors are self-serving. In contrast, in eastern cultures, relationships are the foundation of trust and people contribute as part of their social role in the community. This influences who joins and stays in projects. 4) Cultures shape how we communicate. The asynchronous and computer-mediated work in open source are easier with direct expressions common in western cultures. The contextual and nuanced meanings that are important in eastern cultures are much harder in open source to observe. 5) Local meetups are great ways to bridge cultural differences by creating spaces for each culture to be included in their known context.
