How can Intelligent Transport Systems transform rural 'transport deserts'? Bax's Giel Mertens and Philippa Bernard are working with seven regions across Europe to find out. Led by the Province of Overijssel, the regions will design new regional policies to integrate demand-responsive transport, ride-sharing, and MaaS into public mobility services. The initiative aims to design models for public authorities to operate affordable services that offer vulnerable groups a route out of social and economic exclusion. Bax will support the Provincie Overijssel as well as Viimsi Vallavalitsus | Viimsi Municipality Government, Region Kalmar län, Autoritat del Transport Metropolità, TML - Transportes Metropolitanos de Lisboa, the Municipality of Hoče-Slivnica, and the Office for Regional Development Leine and Weser region, with support from Interreg Europe through Rural Mobility. Ignite Sweden recently worked with Bax's European Programmes team to find the best funding and networking opportunities in Europe. The non-profit startup platform has already supported over 1,700 startups in the past seven years. Looking to expand its support, Ignite worked with Bax to create a strategic European funding and networking roadmap. European Programmes consultants Cleo Sips and Charline Morichon analysed 23 funding streams and a range of networking opportunities. The final product was an integrated funding and networking portfolio tailored to Ignite's strategic ambitions. Within just two months, Ignite Sweden became an official EIC Ecosystem partner following the team's advice. The rise of offshore wind energy is powering a more sustainable future, but there’s a critical challenge we can’t ignore: what happens to wind turbine blades at the end of their lifecycle? Blade circularity was just one of the hot topics in our work on the IJmuiden Ver Alpha project – a 2GW offshore wind farm that will generate around 7% of the Netherlands’ electricity needs once completed. 🚎 🚲 🚅 Today is World Sustainable Transport Day - A day designated by United Nations to reflect and make transport safer, more efficient, more sustainable, and greener. Every year, billions of journeys take people and goods from one place to another. At Bax, we work with public authorities, planners, and service providers across the European transport and mobility sector to ensure these journeys are more sustainable, affordable, smarter, and healthier. This week, Consultants from our Mobility and Healthy Cities teams are attending the Annual POLIS Network Conference in Karlsruhe, Germany. Europe’s leading sustainable mobility event, the conference provides an opportunity for cities and regions to showcase their transport achievements to a large audience of mobility experts, practitioners, and decision-makers from both the public and private sectors. Here’s where you can catch members of the Bax team this week! 👇 🔹 On Wednesday, Mobility & Logistics Planning Consultant Víctor Ferran Carpintero will partake in Parallel Session 4B; “Gearing up Cities and Regions for Automation.” The session will explore the societal implications of automation in public transport through the presentation of key findings from a Delphi study, conducted with a panel of experts and complemented by interviews and insights from pilot sites across Europe. 🔹 On Thursday, Healthy Cities Consultant Ruth Gow McLenachan will participate in Parallel Session 4A; “Better Urban Living Through Active Mobility.”   The presentation will explore how Healthy Cities. integrates health into urban planning to create active, liveable environments. Ruth will  present case studies on local urban health strategies and health-focused mobility planning, showcasing innovative, evidence-based approaches, as well as useful tools to assess health impacts, advancing sustainable urban design. How can impact investing kick-off a European affordable housing boom? Our Director Rolf Bastiaanssen will moderate an expert panel on affordable housing at Europe's leading impact investment conference this week. At Impact Europe's Impact Week in Bilbao, the panel - hosted by Erste Social Finance - will discuss how impact investment funds can speed up the building of high-quality affordable housing. Affordable and social housing remain existential challenges to Europe. 1 in 10 city-based Europeans live in a household spending more than 40% of income on housing costs. Around 900,000 people are experiencing homelessness. More affordable housing is needed, and quickly. What does a Mediterranean mobility hub look like? This is the question for mobility planners and policymakers across Mediterranean countries as they being to design mobility hubs. Mobility hubs show promise across Northern Europe, reducing traffic congestion and air pollution. But how should hubs be tailored to the sunnier climates and distinct mobility patterns of the Mediterranean? To find the answer, Bax's Lea Rocholl and Giel Mertens are working with universities, cities and experts in the Mediterranean to design a mobility hub concept that fits Mediterranean transport habits. The initiative will investigate the readiness of citizens and policymakers for these changes and explore ways to promote a change in local mobility culture. Involving six partners from across the Mediterranean, the project will develop a strategy for inclusive, sustainable mobility that benefits both residents and tourists. Bax will work with the University of West Attica, ALOT S.r.l., the University of Malta, University of Cyprus, and the City of Ljubuški with support from the European Union through the Interreg Euro-MED Programme and the GREENMO project.
