The best way to maintain and nurture connections is to mimic in-person habits; use Linkedin to frequently check in, say something personal and insightful, no sales pitch, develop the skill and empathy needed to build genuine connections. Leave your corporate speak, AI and copy-paste communication behind, those are useless. Nothing beats a well-written personal message.

The first thing to do is follow up with them after your trip is over. Connect with them on Social media Appreciate their content and posts Give value to them and stay connected

Maintaining connections made during business trips is key for nurturing lasting professional relationships. To keep these contacts engaged, I promptly send a personalized follow-up after our meeting. This message not only expresses appreciation for the conversation but also recalls specific points we discussed, setting a positive and attentive tone. I regularly check in with relevant updates or articles tailored to their interests or industry, which keeps the dialogue active and shows my continued interest. Whenever possible, I also try to arrange face-to-face meetings, whether it's a casual coffee when I'm in town or at upcoming industry events. These steps ensure that the connections I make on business trips remain strong and productive.

I have connected with valuable business contacts on LinkedIn and placed orders for IT development prototypes in order to test their skills and competencies. The result has been a clearer understanding of their capabilities, which helped me evaluate the potential for a long-term business relationship

From there, stay engaged by sharing relevant articles, offering your expertise when needed, or even setting up casual catch-ups. It’s all about showing genuine interest in their growth while also keeping them informed of your own.

The best bond to someone else is to understand him. His motivation, thoughts, beliefs. This doesn't mean to fully agree with someone. When I was giving a workshop at a customer about how to polish your speaking skills I did a testrun in front of people who knew me well. But they don't agree in everything I do or say. I picked them because of this circumstance - to get a good and honest feedback. We all are humans before we become "customers", "suppliers", and "contacts". See the human in everyone - even when you not fully agree with this person.

The goal is to stablish, nurture and develop a Business Relationship, not to schedule a meeting. During your in-person meeting is valuable to take brief notes about the conversation: -What they asked about the company in first place? -What they found interesting about the solutions you have? Very important to take a note regarding any personal detail the person shared with you (like if it was their first time visiting the city, or if she/he had a long flight to get there, sports team they cheer for, a comment about the weather, etc.) You should use this information to personalize your following up email / call, and the have a deeper conversation about their needs and what they are looking for. That should be the starting point.
