My Voice Matters: Karmen Cummings' Journey with Epilepsy
Meet Karmen Cummings, a dedicated teacher, competitive cheerleading coach, and active community member. Like many, Karmen had never imagined that epilepsy would become a part of her life. That all changed after she experienced two car accidents that ultimately led to her epilepsy diagnosis. Up until then, she had been living a healthy, vibrant life with no history of illness or hospital visits.
In 2007, Karmen discovered Epilepsy Alliance Florida through an online search. Unsure of where to turn next, she found a mentor through the organization who became a crucial part of her support system. This guidance was invaluable as she navigated the complexities of her new diagnosis.
Over the years, Karmen has actively participated in various services and activities offered by Epilepsy Alliance Florida. She has connected with others through online support groups and chat forums, found medical assistance to locate a specialist suited to her needs, and received career resources to help her continue thriving professionally. These experiences have empowered Karmen to confidently share her journey with epilepsy, both publicly and privately, realizing that she can still lead an independent and responsible life.
Karmen is passionate about changing how society perceives people diagnosed with epilepsy. She has felt firsthand the unfair treatment that individuals with epilepsy often face and is committed to advocating for change. Karmen is immensely grateful to Epilepsy Alliance Florida for their phenomenal support, which has been instrumental in helping her during challenging times.
