Postdoctoral scholars are an integral part of the College of the Environment. Between our academic and research units, and including EarthLab, the Climate Impact Group and Friday Harbor Labs, there are nearly 100 postdoc fellows.
Office of Postdoctoral Affairs
The University of Washington Office of Postdoctoral Affairs is located at located at Loew Hall, room 302, and is directed by Dr. William Mahoney, associate dean for Student and Postdoctoral Affairs, in the Graduate School. Postdocs can find campus resources to address career exploration, appointments, mentoring, teaching and research skills, and connect with other postdocs from across campus with similar questions and career development goals. Postdocs may also sign up for the OPA listserv and the bi-weekly newsletter, and find upcoming events.
Handbook for Postdoc Scholars
The Handbook for Postdoc Fellows (v1.0) was released by the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs in February 2016 as a campus-wide resource guide for postdocs, advisors, and supervisors. NOTE: this resource was created prior to the unionization of postdoctoral scholars and has not been updated to reflect current policies. As soon as an updated version becomes available, the link will be added. It includes a checklist for new postdocs, links to relevant national policies, tips for working with your advisor, as well as sections on professional development, career exploration and teaching and learning opportunities.
UW Postdoctoral Association (dormant)
The UW Postdoctoral Association (UWPA) is run by postdoctoral scholars for postdoctoral scholars. It is served by an executive committee of 12 postdocs, each serving a one-year term, and elected by their peers. The UWPA serves as an advocate for postdocs at the UW on issues such as parental leave as a postdoc, and professional development and career exploration. In addition, the UWPA works to provide programming such as an annual research symposium, monthly happy hours, social outings and intramural sports teams.
UW Postdoc Diversity Alliance (dormant)
The UW Postdoc Diversity Alliance is a community of postdoctoral researchers at the University of Washington with the mission to increase the diversity of research leaders in academics and other industries. They advocate for institutional support of equity and inclusion, promote opportunities for professional development among our peers, and provide a community for social support and allyship.
National Postdoctoral Association
The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) is a member-driven, non-profit organization (501(c)3 status) that provides a voice for postdoctoral scholars. NPW’s agenda looks to enhance the quality of the national postdoctoral experience and provide a leadership role in addressing issues that confront the postdoctoral community.
