Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *ŋroːn, *ŋroːn) : phonetic (OC *ŋon, head) + semantic (head).

As came to be used to mean “original”, rather than “head”, this character was formed from the original meaning of (“head”) + the semantic element to affirm the “head” meaning, but with the modification in meaning to “an intransigent head”; the head of a heady person.
