In oracle bone script ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : 木 (“wood”) + 示 (“altar”) – burning of wood to consult the gods. Originally the same character as 奈
In the modern form 木 has corrupted into 出, thus the character can be interpreted as phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *sqʰluds) : phonetic 出 (OC *kʰljuds, *kʰljud) + semantic 示 (“altar”).
