8 months ago, we had a pre-seed round committed w/ several investors We didn't take any of the money (thankfully) ⤵ At this time, we had just started the company (had only 30 paying clients) and we thought that it was time to raise. Looking back, we were raising for the wrong reasons. We were raising because: - we thought that it was cool to be a venture-backed startup - we wanted to make a post on LinkedIn announcing our round - we believed spending money would get us closer to product market fit - we thought clients would be more likely to use our product if they knew that we had raised a round And honestly, these are just bad reasons to raise. When we were asked what we would spend the money on, it was all on marketing channels. We weren't paying salaries at that time and didn't need to make any hires. And we were asked by some folks about the free marketing channels that existed and we kinda shrugged it off. I think that we were so excited by the potential of venture backing that we didn't stop to think if we actually needed the money. We ended up getting a the money committed and we were drafting up the SAFEs to send out. Before we sent the SAFEs, we wanted to get advice from our founder friends about the round. Cory and I had a call with Drew Cousin about our round and in the convo with him, we had a hard time explaining why we needed the money. And we didn't have an answer for the free marketing channels that we had seriously tried. We spoke with a few more folks about the round and began to realize that we were being a bit premature raising a round without fully understanding the dynamics of our startup and our industry as well. And realized that we were raising a vanity round. So, we decided that we would hold off. And we would squeeze out all of the juice of the free marketing channels that existed. These free marketing channels include content, partnerships, cold DM, cold outbound, attending events, and making friends with important industry leaders. Cory Gill, Bill Wohlers, and I decided to decline the round and try as hard as we could on free marketing channels before thinking about raising again. And what a great decision that was. By focusing on unpaid channels, we were scrappy and hungry. And we ended up forming a lot of partnerships and met important people as a result of trying super hard on content and partnerships. I think if we raised, we would've just thrown money at ads and wouldn't have made the connections we've made to date. By not raising, we've found product market fit and really understood the eCommerce industry. And we've grown to over 400 clients and have been profitable for a few months. And when we told the pre-seed investors that we wouldn't be taking the money, they said that it made them respect us more. They said it showed we had discipline and a strong focus on building. How can a 70,000,000,000 $US industry (SEO) be suddenly threatening most of its players? I came across a podcast some time ago and its main topic was, how AI (and LLMs) will change the SEO (search engine optimization) market. Today, most companies rely heavily on SEO and their brand ranking in the search market (yes, we know, 70-90%, it's about Google 😏 ). The Doppelgänger Tech Talk Podcast discussed how new LLMs (ChatGPT, Gemini) will change the search landscape and how there are currently no monitor tools for this new way of SEO (it's called GAIO - Generative AI optimization). Think of Semrush for LLMs or AI-based searches. Since I heard this podcast, a lot has changed. ChatGPT and others are not only using their internal, learned knowledge but are using RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation - simply spoken, the add search results to their AI generation) to get up-to-date data into their responses. Google launched their new AI overviews, which are reshaping the market (currently only in the US, UK, AUS) heavily. Brand managers need to start thinking about how this will affect their brand campaigns in the near future. SEO and brand expert Wil Reynolds recently shared that his websites lost >40% of their traffic, but traffic from AI-based searches picked up massively in September and the trajectory is immense. Product vs. Business Quite often I see when it's about startups people speak about the product. But the product (no matter how good it is) is just one piece of the puzzle. If you want your startup to succeed, then you should pay attention not only to the product. Once you bring your product to the market, it's no longer about the product. It's about the business. You need to market whatever you do. You need to account for your profit and expenses. You need to have people supporting and assisting your customers and so on and so on and so on... So many things that are not related to the product in any way. And all these things are crucial for success. If there's no proper marketing who will know about the product? If there's no accounting how would you know whether you make any profit (or when you need to fundraise to avoid getting bankrupt)? If there are no people to speak with customers how do you know whether the customers actually like your product or maybe have some problems? So while, for example, getting product-market fit is important, it will do you nothing if you are not thinking in terms of business. If you are thinking and operating like a business, then even without having a perfect product-market fit you can still get some sales and get some data, which would allow you to better adapt your product to the market. But if there's no business, then even the perfect market fit would mean nothing. So start building a business, not the product. Focus on getting to the market fast to get real customer feedback. Use that feedback to adapt the product to the market. You will quickly if there's money in what you do or not. And if there's no money, then just change. A successful startup is a business, not a product.

I've worked with brands that crafted product mock-ups, shared them on social platforms, and gauged interest based on real-time user interactions. It's fast, it's public, and it can significantly pivot your product direction with minimal spending. 🔴 Fake Door Testing - Place a button for a non-existent feature and measure interest by the number of clicks it receives. This method helped one of my clients scrap a feature that would have wasted $200K in development costs. Turns out, not many were keen on clicking that shiny new button. 🔴 Sell Before You Build - Imagine selling your product before it even exists. Sounds tricky, right? But it's incredibly effective. This approach not only validates the market demand but also secures some initial funding. The Hamster token has also plummeted by 76% in value. 📉 This got me thinking about the challenges of acquiring traffic on Telegram and how to make it effective—one of the biggest pain points for marketers working with this platform. Here’s my take on the different types of traffic within Telegram and some pros and cons for each approach: 𝟭. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 (𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴)  This is the most common and effective way to advertise. If you know your target audience well and have solid creatives, there’s no better option for reaching real users (Telegram, after all, is full of bots). It’s also relatively cost-effective per lead. However, managing ad placements requires a dedicated specialist or agency due to the time-intensive nature of this work. 𝟮. 𝗧𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀/𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘀 This is a mainstay for clicker games and many Telegram-based games. You give players a task to subscribe to a channel in exchange for in-game bonuses. Pro: Super cheap traffic (from $0.1 per subscriber). Con: The audience is often inactive or irrelevant, especially if they’re from regions where your business doesn’t operate. Still, it’s a quick way to boost numbers for early-stage visibility. 65% of our new ARR last month came inbound. Our secret? We do one thing every early-stage startup should (but lots don't): Consistently publish social content. In March, we decided that we were going to go all-in on posting on LinkedIn + Twitter daily. A lot of Founders neglect it because they feel they don't have the time, or because they can't tie it to revenue effectively enough. We're 3 months in and it's clear that it is the easiest way to punch above your weight (especially in a competitive market like ours). Not to mention, it's been a huge money-maker for us. We're driving both top-of-funnel awareness and bottom-of-funnel conversions. When I was at the PLGTM conference earlier this year, I had multiple people come up to me and mention that they'd heard about me from my LinkedIn or Twitter posts. Opening a conversation with some familiarity to myself and Unify is insanely powerful. TLDR: Make social a core part of your GTM motion. Done right, you'll drive both top-of-funnel awareness and bottom-of-funnel conversions. ...unless you're in the outbound/GTM space. Even if you don’t work with startups and couldn’t care less about the unicorns, you can still learn a lot about the industry from the 2024 unicorn list. Earlier this month, TechCrunch released a list of 38 startups turned unicorns this year. And here are the insights I’ve emphasized for myself: → If you’re worried the AI hype is over, don’t be: 26.3% of the unicorns are AI-related Some of them focus on search engines and text-to-speech models, and others combine innovation with established industries. But there’s still plenty of room for new ideas. → Data and cybersecurity are as important as ever Whether you make it your goal or prioritize security for users in your solution, it naturally remains on people’s minds. → The industry and market don’t matter as much when you’re on a mission Whether it’s e-commerce or logistics, the things that actually matter are: • why you’re building it • who you’re building it for  • how others benefit from it → The best solution out there is as good as its marketing The reason some startups make it to unicorns and others don’t is never just about mission. I’ve seen great ideas die because no one paid attention to them at the time. And I’ve seen basic solutions gain way too much attention because of good promo. → You can’t hide from blockchain. No matter how you feel about it. It’s getting better. It’s following a vision. And it’s slowly disrupting conventional industries like data management and finance. In a nutshell, aiming for a unicorn is not a recipe. It’s art, it’s a mission, and it’s a mindset. Did they just steal my money? One of the companies we know had issues with external payment processors, which caused massive payout delays. Is this a big problem? Sure, it is. How SHOULD the company have dealt with the situation? 1. Ahead of time: Inform their users of payout problems. 2. Once someone asks for a payout: inform them there will be delays and assure them the situation is being monitored. 3. When someone asks what's wrong: give them transparent information and update them on the progress. How DID the company deal with the situation? 1. Ahead of time: didn't say anything to anyone. 2. Once someone asks for a payout, pretend nothing is happening, provide no heads-up, and do business as usual. 3. When someone asks what's wrong: send them a lousy email with lousy generic apologies, with a link to a lousy website with a lousy generic post about "some delays". At the end of the day, people are getting their money. With a delay, but still. Will they ever use this platform again? Nope. All the money for user acquisition and onboarding is wasted. All the pretty "client retention" plans, PowerPoints, KPIs, and whatnot are completely useless when you simply lack empathy and common sense.
