Why do research papers get rejected? I agree, getting research paper rejected can be disappointing, BUT understanding the common reasons behind rejections can help you avoid them in the future. In my experience these following mistakes are common and critical: 1️⃣ Poor Fit with the Journal’s Scope Reason: Submitting to a journal misaligned with your topic. Fit: Review the journal’s aims and scope thoroughly before submission. 2️⃣ Inadequate or Flawed Methodology Reason: Weak study design, small sample size, or flawed data collection methods. Fit: Ensure your methodology is sound, well-documented, and peer-reviewed. 3️⃣ Lack of Originality or Novelty Reason: Papers that repeat existing research often face rejection. Fit: Clearly demonstrate how your work contributes new knowledge or perspectives. 4️⃣ Weak Writing and Presentation Reason: Poor organization or formatting distracts from your research quality. Fit: Use clear language and polish your presentation. 5️⃣ Failure to Follow Submission Guidelines Reason: Overlooking specific journal requirements (e.g., formatting, word count). Fit: Always adhere to the journal’s submission guidelines. 6️⃣ Insufficient Literature Review Reason: Not providing a comprehensive review of existing research. My Paper is Rejected 7 times by top-tier journals before accepting. I am glad to share that our paper has been accepted in Spring Nature (BioNanoSciences) after 3 years of struggles (2021-2024). This paper is very special to me because it the part of my PhD thesis work. Don't think it's too much time. Let me explain a few things to you why it takes times Don't take rejection as a failure in your life. But it is something that encourages you to learn new things in multidisciplinary directions. 1—The major hurdle in publishing a paper is Financial Support. I know many of you say most journals offer 50% off for developing countries or something like that. But let me tell you, even $200$ is also costly for developing countries' researchers. 2- Writing Papers in systematic order is one of the biggest challenges. This doesn't mean writing an Introduction, method, results, and discussion according to the journal's layout. This includes writing your literature in a systematic way to support your evidence and research question. 3- Writing a paper in the Academic writing and decoding journal's Aim and scope is one of the most important factors determining your success. What I learn during this submission/rejection process: 1- Try to publish papers in closed-access journals. Although it takes time (More than 9 months). It helps you in publishing in good journals. (Open-access journals are always expensive and less time-consuming.) 2- Finding a Reviewer for papers is also a major task. There should be a policy to facilitate reviews because most of the time they are working at no cost. Giving them facilities or rewards may accelerate the time. (My paper was in review for 3 months.) (Want to learn how to respond to reviewer comments?) 3- Learn AI tools to write your literature evidence. Be equipped with the latest AI technology. I learned so many tools to improve my Ph.D. thesis and paper writing some of these are: a) Find the relevant literature with Litmaps b) Summarizing articles with SciSpace c) Organizing your literature and notes with EndNote d) Most of you prefer writing with Grammarly but I suggest you learn Paperpal which is specifically designed for academic writing and article submission checks. This gives all red flags before submitting to the journals. e) Upgrade your Powerpoint with AI and add on to improve your image quality. (Stay tuned for all tutorials.) ___ I am Dr. Rabia.
