On one occasion she was at lunch with her trainer Captain Cecil Boyd-Rochfort at his stables, Freemason Lodge, in Newcastle. For dessert crème brûlée was served. The caramelized topping was so hard that no one at the table could break into it. To everyone’s astonishment, the queen slipped off her high-heeled shoe and smashed it down onto the dessert, cracking it into pieces. “She felt comfortable with her own people,” explained Sean Smith, author of Royal Racing. “There is no need for airs and graces. She has known them for decades.”
