Clinical adoption is the hidden final boss of healthcare innovation. (As no adoption = no success) Too often, we see companies undertake the herculean tasks of fundraising, evidence generation and regulatory approval - Only to find themselves stuck when it comes to adoption. We have a good example from Germany's DIGA system. A national healthtech reimbursement system - companies worked extremely hard to fulfill the evidence and economic requirements to be listed on it. But despite receiving national reimbursement status - what healthtech companies found was that uptake of their products were still poor. (Which led to little or no sales 😱 ) ____________________________________ 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞? There were a few factors, but 2 points stood out. 1. 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝. - Many products required a prescription from clinicians. - But many of the frontline clinicians were simply not aware that such products existed. - Not only that, many were not made aware of how, when, why and when not to prescribe these tools. (Imagine being handed a box of pills without knowing what they were for!) 2. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝. - The health systems were not set up to use these tools. - Changes needed in the clinical pathway were not accounted for, as well as the need to change clinical practice. - Some products did not fit into local tech infrastructure, which meant that it was difficult to use these new tools. (Much like having a high speed rail train, but no suitable rails for it) _________________________________ These challenges are not unique to Germany. In fact, they are the same in any health system. It takes a lot more than just handing a brilliant piece of tech to health systems to gain adoption. It requires: Support Education Partnership ✨𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨✨ For it to 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 work. How does the future of healthcare in EU look like to you? 🔮 AI in Healthcare is currently a hot topic, but are we catching the momentum in supporting innovative projects that leverage AI to improve healthcare outcomes? Raindrops are a great metaphor for the #digitaltransformation of Healthcare. What do I mean? The promises of the digital health revolution are many. Decreased workload, improved diagnostics, improved efficiency, greater access, enabling technologies etc. Furthermore, their wide adoption seems imminent! Not only does it make sense, but in every other industry, those same technologies are in place and delivering on their promise. In fact, the digial revolution should hit healthcare like a tsunami and allow us to start over on some version of the medical bay on the Starship Enterprise. It is a cruel experiment: your car drives you to work but when you get there, you are faxing patient referrals. A patient can book an international flight but when they try to book a clinic appointment, the task is insanely complicated. But not everywhere. At Kaiser Permanenet in NCAL, it is faster to book an online appointment than to do it on the phone (I did it). Some patients have the benefit of a sci-fi avatar driven all knowing virtual assistant to help them recover from surgery. A couple of posts back, I talked about the speed at which smaller hospital groups are able to adopt new technology efficiently. Unburdened by legacy tech stacks and outdated leadership models, they can actually identify pain points for which there are mature digital solutions and implement them. Done. Each of these smaller groups, or digitally enabled private practices, represents a rain drop of technological adoption. Over time, adjacent raindrops will coalesce, competition will lead to curiosity, curiosity will lead to familiarity, familiarity to trust, and trust to broad adoption. In the 1990s, many proclaimed that sequencing the human genome would usher in a wave of cancer cures within a decade. Nearly 40 years later, we are starting to see some raindrops. Today, it's AI. We hoped that a computer science tsunami would wipe the healthcare slate clean, but instead, we are getting raindrops of success and people are either surprised or disappointed. We should not be. For each raindrop, in that location, the job is done. Eventually, others join in. The network effect grows. And it grows quickly. So: go ahead, be a raindrop. Lead the pack. Great summary of HLTH Europe by Thomas Hagemeijer. Love the clarity and simplicity of his insights on the Healthcare and Healthtech market. For us in Broadlake we are seeing very exciting opportunities in the UK & Ireland in tech enabled healthcare services but the key pillars of success appear to revolve around appropriate unit pricing, brutal honesty in assessments of customer acquisition costs and customer lifetime values and access to a diverse pool of healthcare talent. For us the logical evolution of Telehealth 2.0 is a Digiphysical approach to Tech Enabled Healthcare Services.
