Deeptech can’t achieve its FULL impact if it’s not paired with solutions for all the inevitable speed bumps as it rolls out. 🤖 A great example is Ubiquity Ventures-backed Olis Robotics: when robots fail and production lines halt, it's incredibly painful for these robotics/industrial automation customers. Olis enables them to understand the what/why of robot failures in the field and trigger a fix. Olis Robotics founder Fredrik Rydén has spent over a decade working with robots and realized that a major bottleneck is understanding robot failure in the field. His product allows customers to see the root cause of robot failure instantly (using logs and video recordings) and then activating remote control to remedy the issue and get the robot back to work. The founding of the company goes back to remote control of robots deep underwater and in other remote environments. Now the company is working with many customers in manufacturing plants and warehouses to bring more automation, reliability and recovery to their industrial automation. I'm very happy to have Ubiquity Ventures invest in the Olis Robotics pre-seed round last year alongside T. A. McCann (Pioneer Square Labs) and Matt Rhodes-Kropf (Tectonic Ventures). 4 areas where #ai can supercharge your #supplier #duediligence process 🤯🔥 I know most of you are probably tired of hearing high level talks about how #ai will change your work. So last week at the Gothenburg Sustainability conference we tried to get under the skin of it and provide some very concrete examples of what ai enables you to do TODAY to supercharge your supplier esg due dilligences that simply wasn't possible with old tools. 1⃣ supplier master data and entity resolution. I know 😴 it's such a boring topic (sorry Dun & Bradstreet), but when you're trying to automate things there's a principle called "garbage in garbage out". And honestly most companies supplier master data is garbage. #ai can help you work through a very messy supplier master data to: clean up names, generate aliases, find parent companies, find and validate company websites, visit company websites and extract meta data like industries, size and geographies operating in. And it can do it at scale, e.g. Process a 60,000 supplier base automatically. 2⃣ look up the supplier in third party databases. Is my supplier minority owned? Does it have that certification? Were they involved in sanctions or laws suits or news scandals? There are so many due diligence workflows that requires looking a supplier up in a third party database. And there's just no unique IDs consistently used so you're stuck with looking up a supplier on names. Lots of false negatives and false positives + manual work when doing that at scale. Again ai can really help. Not only can you fix your masterdata as described above, but you can add logic to the matching process. E.g. Does the company described in that article approximately match the industries found on the suppliers website? Or is one a TV channel and the other a metals company? 3⃣ extract information from a company's public reporting. Companies are creating reports for humans to read, not machines. That means that something as simple as a scope 1 emission number can be found in 100s of highly fragmented formats, tables, graphs, pictures, etc. This is simply not something you can train old fashioned machine learning algorithms to extract. But a large language model can in many cases read a report like a human and extract and structure the information in the right format. 4⃣ supplier engagement. Have you ever tried setting up a supplier questionnaire and realized that the only way you can automate things is by sending yes no or select answer questions? God forbid you create a free text option and need to read thousands of responses. Thing is though, yes/no questions are terribly low in information value, so most of the time it simply doesn't work. With ai you analyze responses at scale and automatically score them even when they're free text. -- At Responsibly we deploy ai techniques 100s of places throughout the due diligence process and the end result can seem like magic. In the last couple of years, LLM based tools, like GitHub Copilot, have become a popular aide in software development. They have been used for autocompletion, for translations and in reasoning. However, they have a tendency to hallucinate and to produce insecure code. How well do they fare on rust, and can we use them to help us write safer and less vulnerable code? Rust is a new and somewhat smaller language, which is less represented in the training data. So, one can expect some challenges. At the same time, one can hope that rust's type checker and borrow checker can help to catch LLMs hallucinations. In this talk we will go over several ways we have tried to use LLMs in a more automated approach, from translation of other languages into rust, to fixing compiler errors and reasoning about software vulnerabilities. The talk is also an invitation to collect feedback and experiences in the use of LLMs from the Rust Aarhus community. 1 employee = 500.000.000 USD value! Don't say the expectations for what AI companies can achieve have been dampened. Ilya Sutskevers new company Safe Superintelligence Inc. already has a valuation of 5 billion USD and has just received 1 billion USD in funding although they only have 10 employees. Founders included. Impressive. It's one more player into the GenAI fight that intensifies currently with OpenAI being pressured from an increasing number of competitors of which some, like Anthropic have already shown ability to fight in the same weightclass (Claude 3.5 Sonnet - and now an impressive enterprise version) while others are moving up as well. Another learning is the emphasis on building safe AI in all aspects. It's becoming a still stronger demand that SSI is targeting. It will be interesting to follow the battle. Two weeks ago, the Li-ion battery startup, Northvolt, declared bankruptcy. Northvolt was the largest ClimateTech startup and the biggest unicorn in Sweden. The company burned through $15 billion in investment without ever shipping a product. Northvolt should’ve been a huge success. It could've become a champion for the entire ClimateTech sector. Instead, it failed. For wholly predictable reasons. Caused by the same mistakes that trip up early-stage startups that will lose $15M instead of $15B. Even before getting their first factory operational in Sweden, they started building five more around Europe. Even before getting their EV batteries manufactured to spec, they were developing batteries for storage and aviation. They focused on sustainability, using locally sourced materials, renewable energy, and recyclability. Worthy goals, of course, but when the price of batteries dropped from $230/kWh to $78/kWh it was impossible to compete with the giant Chinese and Korean suppliers. When EVs were hot, car manufacturers ordered $53B of batteries from Northvolt. But when the market cooled and the car makers looked for ways to cut expenses, Northvolt went on the chopping block. There's a lot of critical takeaways from the Northvolt debacle applicable to every startup: 1. Don’t start building your second factory, or your second product, before mastering the first. The hardest thing for founders to do is to say no. It’s also the most important. 2. Find a protectable niche. Sustainability wasn't sufficient. Northvolt couldn’t compete with the economies of scale of the giant Chinese and Korean battery manufacturers. 3. Beware of the hype cycle. EVs and batteries were hot, hot, hot. Until they were not. 4. Corporate investors can be your savior, but when you no longer fit their corporate strategy, they’ll write you off in a heartbeat. 5. Governments are really bad investors. They’ll throw billions at anything that promises jobs, but they have no clue how to work with high-risk startups. 6. Manufacturing is really effing tough. You may think you’re a science company, but you’re really a manufacturing and supply chain company. Be prepared for manufacturing hell. Read the full article here:
