What if waste is seen as a resource? Entirely new possibilities open up. As growing algae with extraordinary qualities. This is one example of a Regenerative Business (RB) that will be key building blocks of circular economies of the future. Great and important interview with EAT co-founder Johan Rockström of PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the rockstar scientist behind the planetary boundaries: "We have more and more evidence that transitioning to solutions and economies that operate within safe planetary boundaries is not only necessary and achievable at scale but also will generate better outcomes for people in terms of jobs, income, economic development, security, social stability, health, and equity. If we want to ensure equity for nine billion people, we can’t continue with business as usual. The only way to have a just future for all is by transforming to sustainable ways of running our societies within planetary boundaries." We all need to ask ourselves what we will say to our kids and future generations about our actions and activities during these crucial times, when the science showed us that we were in a planetary emergency but there was still time to turn things around. 💧 Meandering Mondays with Water (ep 50) 💧 Do we need to be telling more compelling water stories linked to climate? Scanning through my feed at the various reflections from Stockholm one kept emerging – water and climate. More specifically because many of the tangible impacts that will be felt because of a changing climate will often manifest through water. These observations or reflection are not new, there was a specific point made about that climate could have been more center stage during the conversations at the AWS Forum back in May. This did get me thinking, it is not that this community is oblivious to the intimate connection between water and climate and it is also not that this community is not doing anything to share this knowledge with other but it does feel like this observation comes up again and again and again, year after year. So…are we missing an opportunity to tell more compelling stories about water and climate? Do we need to re-think how we are scaling the widening of the awareness of the connection between water and climate? With UNGA only a few weeks away we have one of the most tangible opportunities for the water community to make noise within the context of what has been traditionally a climate centered week of conversations. I have started hearing the word regenerative more and more lately and it seems to be exactly what we are also doing. Many people speak about sustainability, but it is not alone an adequate goal. Sustainable is something that can be sustained over time, doing little harm to future generations. We need to do better. Regenerative is something that aims to do no harm and lead to benefits / reversal of harm. Our partner Søren Jensen is telling that: ”Imagine if you could create buildings that did not burden the environment, but actually contributed to restoring it." In the land of endless forests (covering 75% of Finland's surface) and Arctic winds, a legal battle brews... Finland, known for its ambitious climate goals, now finds itself in court, challenged by environmental groups and Sámi youth. The Sámi are a group of indigenous people from the region stretching across the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola peninsula in Russia. Their claim? That the government’s inaction is a violation of human rights, as unsustainable land practices threaten the future of both the climate and indigenous cultures. Yet, beneath the tension lies hope. Finland still holds one of the strongest climate plans, aiming for a 60% emissions cut by 2030. If the nation can unite, its ambitious climate plan could become a model for the world. The Bullet Points: ➤ Finland is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2035 but is falling short in forestry and agriculture sectors. ➤ Finland’s policies have allowed unsustainable levels of logging, contributing to the collapse of its forest carbon sink. ➤ The Finnish Sámi Youth argue that the lack of climate action violates their rights, particularly in Arctic regions. ➤ The lawsuit builds on the European Court of Human Rights ‘KlimaSeniorinnen’ ruling, setting a legal precedent for stronger climate action. ➤ Finland’s outdated climate plan is hampering progress, leading NGOs to demand immediate corrective action. This very clearly explains the climate crisis and linked knock on effects. Even to myself who is immersed in this every day it is shocking. Why doesn’t this data and evidence shock politicians and make them take faster and more impactful action? Is it that our Governments are financed by the fossil fuel industry, driven by global trade with huge carbon footprint and increasing GDPR? We must use the next election to vote for the planet.

I do adopt the 9Rs of circular economy. In fact, as middle-class Indians, most of us have seen our parents and elders reduce, rethink, reuse, repair, refurbish, and repurpose before discarding. In India, we call it "jugaad". "Jugad" is to rethink and find alternative and imaginative ways to solve a problem. I have always said that the middle class is the most environmentally friendly. Limited finances make us value our resources. This makes me appreciate my younger years and my upbringing. Read the article and tell me if you could relate to me.

A very interesting new study about ice shelf meltwater pools in Antarctica. Years ago, scientists studying ice sheets in Greenland found that meltwater pools high in the ice sheets were seeping down through the ice and might be reducing friction between the ice and the land. Now, at the other end of the world, these scientists have found evidence that meltwater pools on ice shelves (the floating ice at the end of a glacier) may be leading to large scale fracturing of the shelves. I like this study because it seems so clear in hindsight. Of course, it is worrisome. But it’s good science. Well worth a read.
