Just Enough Research by Erika Hall is one of those rare timeless tomes that survives circumstances that might have removed it from the market - it’s that good. Often the complaint in corporate environments is that user experience “slows down” the process. Some of that is perception, but it’s also true that some of our research and design techniques can spiral out of timeboxes. Figuring out how to execute on the craft while coexisting with the corporate pace is critical, and Erika’s book is one of the handbooks you should have along the way, no matter what industry you’re in.

Findings & discoveries as I update my design system Day 1: Pair heading sizes with body sizes! Larges go with larges, smalls go with smalls, ect. This seems so obvious.. but reading about it in @Adobe Spectrum docs made me reevaluate the relationship between my styles. Every time I see a post about how design is an aesthetic, visual, medium, I wince. Just because it looks like a cheetah, doesn't mean it won't move like a sloth. With all the existing legislation (e.g. Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act of 1973) and the soon to be implemented European Accessibility Act (EAA)... if you're not including people who have visual impairment in your designs then you're going to be missing a large section of your user base and inviting a costly visit from regulators. If you're only designing for an engaging visual interface and not the unseen user-journey or taking into account the emotional and cognitive impact of poor content, information architecture, security and data concerns, then you're doing everyone a disservice. That's before we even get into the unseen (to the customer) operational logistics and complexities of Service Design. I have little time for those who ignore aesthetics, I have even less for those who ignore everything else about the glorious complexity of design and how rewarding it is to everyone, when it's done right.

Goodby - I will separate - and focus at the same time. Do you know that too? You have an item of clothing hanging in your wardrobe that you haven't worn for years and yet you can't part with it. You always have the feeling that you can still use it, that you will miss it at some point. Perhaps there is sometimes a touch of melancholy. The opposite is the case: Focus helps! I will be focussing entirely on LinkedIn. Xing was my first digital business network - and I was a bit excited when I pressed the cancel button. There it is, the melancholy. I learnt, read and sometimes shared something. And I thank my community from there, who now follow me on LinkedIn. Because I really appreciate that: The daily learning from and with my community. Sharing our insights and perspectives, reflecting on our views and discussing the topics that we are passionate about, that move us and that we are committed to in order to develop further. Over the last few years in particular, I have come to really appreciate LinkedIn as a great addition to my analogue networking, as a learning and communication platform. And that's clearly thanks to my community. The platform is "only" the tool. The people make up the community are leading the discussion in which and from which I learn every day. I am infinitely grateful for that. And I look forward to the future discourse on design, design strategies, the added value of design, design leadership, processes and methods. On the other hand, I am interested in topics such as work culture, new work, leadership, collaboration, communication handling of projects and processes. Traditionally, the Maturity model has been associated only with processes, but how do you assess a designer’s maturity? Very less research has been done on this topic. Accessibility is at the core in Sweden! When I moved here I witnessed different times when accessibility was embraced in Sweden. Whether it is convenient public transportation or a feeling of inclusiveness. They also follow strong accessibility guidelines in software products which allowed me to have an in-depth understanding of accessibility. Rohan Mishra shared this video, in which UX Design expert Garima Mehta shares her knowledge of accessibility in design. I have found this video immensely helpful, and I believe it would help you, too. Summary: - Clear page titles - Turn off the images and investigate - Turn off sound, anything missing? - Test gray scale contrast, color etc. any disappearing text? - Ditch mouse, use only keyboard. Is everything still usable? - Resize text much larger, and see if makes sense - Quick source code check, formatting and heading tag structure - Check multimedia alt texts manual testing - Color contrast (web aim contrast checker) - Stark for figma and adobe and much more! Accessibility design standards are always part of my process and we work hard to create great designs that meet required standards. There's a whole host of aspects to address that don't just apply websites - these are just a few; Colour contrast: Keeping at least 70% difference in colour value between the text and the background. Tints: Avoiding colour combinations that feature tints of the same colour. Glare: Using off-white/pale pastel backgrounds instead of white, to reduce glare. Text on an image: Only place text on top of images if there is sufficient contrast. Do you really need a PDF? PDFs have their place—legal requirements, large reports, brochures and whitepapers. And while they can be made accessible PDFs, they are a bit of a pain since any update requires you to re-do all the accessible edits from scratch. But if you have access to the HTML code of the site, then you have a better option. An accessible HTML page can be read by Screenreaders, navigated by keyboard, AND it will scale and be readable on a mobile device. Best of all is if the user truly needs a hard copy, a proper print stylesheet will allow them to print out or export the page as a nicely formatted PDF. #yesterlearnings #PDF #accessibility #a11y #html #webdevelopment #tips

Someone has to say it! Tobias saying it makes it even more legit. Meet and work with a lot of young folks who are looking for mentors at workplace thinking they would be hand held at every step. While guides are there, one needs to walk the path and grind towards a path set by the mentor. Things don’t happen on their own. Blaming is another aspect of design folks where stakeholders are held responsible for what’s happening around them without introspecting why is it happening and what one can do to change that behaviour around by using design frameworks and improving the craft on a daily basis. So much of entitlement will never get us anywhere. #designlife

For the designers out there: If you were developing this product, what would you have done to help avoid this use case failure? I understand the humor in the video. But I don't think it's funny. One (of many XDXD 😂 ) of our strong points is FLEXIBILITY. So whenever we get asked about our process we give the most hideous answer ➰ > "IT depends" On what ❓❓❓ On the client, on the team that is going to be working on that project, on the industry, on the type of needs and problems we need to solve, and of course, on the 🕜 time scope we have to do it. And another KEY point is HOW we transmit this information to all the designers that are going to be working on that specific project. When time is scarce and the project is relatively small (or at least for now) sometimes is better to work the requirement around JTBD. WHY❓ ⭕ It's easier to summarize all that we need to include at least in iteration 1. ⭕ If the client does not have all the requirements ready is easier to share the scope they are looking for in the project and what might be left to the next iteration. ⭕ It gives more creative freedom to designers to propose addons and other creative possibilities. 💡 What to know more?
