Being a Designer in B2B World I tend to be a curious person and like to try out new things whenever possible. Back in 2008 I was working in a consultancy with consumer electronics / B2C clients. Then we got a new B2B client, a tech company that wanted to invest in design. I was excited to start with them, as the assignment seemed super interesting. That proved to be a pivotal moment in my career, as the next 15 years went mostly with B2B companies. The initial project went well, and more projects followed. We started working with more B2B clients, and later, I went on to lead design at a B2B company. Why B2B (Business-to-Business) instead of B2C (Business-to-Consumer)? 💎For me the biggest aha moment was realizing that, as a designer, I can make larger impact in B2B💎 ➕First of all, many B2B businesses are solving some of the most important problems. For example clean energy, water purification, CO2 reduction, healthcare, defence, etc. When working for these companies, the design efforts will contribute to a better world. ➕Secondly, they have offerings that are excellent in many ways, but no designer looked into them yet - the potential for improvement is huge. At times it feels like sailing in a blue ocean of design opportunities. These two combined mean that, as a designer, one can make a huge impact on the things that matter most. ⚠️However, at least the deep end of B2B might not suit everyone. Here are some topics to consider: - Design maturity is likely lower than in B2C. - There will be less design related structures in place, and you need to be active in meta tasks as well - such as explaining design for non-designers, communicating its value, pitching for new positions etc - The previous is also an opportunity - you can develop design process, design systems, and design organization - There is a lot of complexity and technical terms, so be prepared for a learning journey - It will take time to see the results. Just Enough Research by Erika Hall is one of those rare timeless tomes that survives circumstances that might have removed it from the market - it’s that good. Often the complaint in corporate environments is that user experience “slows down” the process. Some of that is perception, but it’s also true that some of our research and design techniques can spiral out of timeboxes. Figuring out how to execute on the craft while coexisting with the corporate pace is critical, and Erika’s book is one of the handbooks you should have along the way, no matter what industry you’re in.

How do you systematically build internal AI capabilities? This year, I’ve worked with the design team at Siili Solutions on generative AI training and creating an internal playbook. Kudos to the team for a structured and ambitious approach to tackling new opportunities in AI. Thanks for the thoughtful and forward-looking conversations!  In general, I've noticed three factors that are crucial for building internal AI muscles: 1. Establishing a common baseline understanding through training tailored to specific roles. 2. Systematically documenting best practices and ethical guidelines throughout the organization. 3. Implementing the necessary tools, policies, and cultural norms to support ethical and fearless experimentation. Learning how to infuse AI into designers' daily activities starts with regular practice. This helps build an intuition of when and how to apply AI effectively internally and for customers.

Fact: Diverse design teams are faster, more efficient, and produce more innovative products.  Why?  Because diverse teams (teams that consist of people with different skillsets, educational backgrounds, and lived experiences) are simply smarter and more creative than homogenous teams. The diversity of skills and expertise in a multidisciplinary team encourages trial and error and challenging the status quo. This stimulates new kinds of learning and thinking, potentially resulting in breakthrough design solutions that would not have been possible with a single-discipline team. Ready to delve deeper?
