🎯 Restricted SharePoint Search - With great power comes great responsibility!   Restricted SharePoint Search is rolling out now, and for tenants that have Copilot for Microsoft 365 enabled, admins will be able to configure it using the new “Set-SPOTenantRestrictedSearchMode” PowerShell command where it will be disabled by default. In this post, I will attempt to clarify what it is, what its purpose is and my recommendation for your that you may agree or disagree with.   📌 What is the Restricted SharePoint Search Restricted SharePoint Search is a feature that allows you to disable organization-wide search, and to restrict both Microsoft Search (😮) and Copilot experiences to a curated set of SharePoint sites of your choice. Additionally, whether you have enabled Microsoft Search or Restricted SharePoint Search, users in your organization will still be able to interact with files and content they own or that they have previously accessed in Copilot. So, in another word this is a not a security trimming feature!   📌 The reason behind Microsoft's creation of this feature  Microsoft's created the “Restricted SharePoint Search” to give some enterprises the time to review and audit site permissions. It is designed to help you maintain momentum with your Copilot deployment while you implement robust data security solutions. And I appreciate that Microsoft is making it clear that this is a short-term solution.   📌 My recommendation regarding the Restricted SharePoint Search While Restricted SharePoint Search will give you time until you fix your site permissions & data oversharing concerns, it will break the Microsoft Search. The Copilot users will see the following message on their Copilot experiences: "Your organization's admin has restricted Copilot from accessing certain SharePoint sites. This limits the content Copilot can search and reference when responding to your prompts. Learn more.” ❗However, Microsoft didn't say anything about how the Microsoft Search experience would be. You can think of people who used to use the Microsoft Search but now they are not getting any good result anymore.   ✨ Therefore, I suggested that you avoid turning on the “Restricted SharePoint Search” and perhaps you can try a different approach by limiting the access to “Microsoft Copilot with Graph-grounded chat” for example as this is where most of the oversharing risk is now. However, if you decide to use the “Restricted SharePoint Search” option anyway, then again you should consider this as a temporary solution and you need to combine this with a thorough change & communication plan so that people know exactly what is going on and why they have this experience in Copilot & Microsoft Search. Citrix has recently released a new version of Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop 7 2402 LTSR on the 15th of April, 2024. In case you are interested, I have written a blog post that covers the updated software components, both On-Premises and Cloud. It is important to note that Citrix LTSR is supported for five years, and the last LTSR was released two years ago. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you plan and upgrade your LTSR environment. If you are currently running 1912 LTSR, it is worth mentioning that it will reach the end-of-life by December 2024. Hence, it is essential to plan a timely upgrade. Users should stop enrolling devices with this method and migrate to alternative management methods.
