“How do you become a #circular organisation at a global level?” This opening question was raised by Vestre CEO Bjørn Fjellstad regarding their own sustainability journey in one of the first plenary discussions of the #SHUBSummit today. The questions led to a meaningful dialogue on scaling challenges from #reverselogistics, to local #regulatorychallenges in state jurisdictions which may not provide the same support structures as in Scandinavia. Moving through the day and the different parallel sessions, the program tackled thematic topics on #innovation, #regeneration and #strategy with inputs from multiple stakeholder perspectives: - #CivilSociety: Martin Rich from Future-Fit Foundation highlighted the excellent #sustainabilitystrategy of Scandinavian solar energy company Better Energy aiming to work in partnership with its +1000 suppliers in the solar industry to help them also become sustainable, in line with the #FutureFitBusinessBenchmark. - #Academia: Matthew Coffay at Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) stressed the need for companies to aim for #netpositiveimpact across all stakeholders in order to become truly regenerative businesses. - #Investor: Noting the role of the #DoubleMaterialityAssessment (DMA) as a tool for a further strategy discussion Linn Hege Aune of Investinor stated that clear measures on progress of target companies for investors are a) whether sustainability has been integrated in the #businessstrategy and b) if the company has then implemented follow up measures on sustainability to support those goals. - #Industry: Mai Lawson Oldgard of Statnett SF highlighted the role of the company’s 2022 #DMA on it’s #corporatestrategy. Moving to lessons learnt and how they informed Statnett’s 2023 DMA she told attendees how the company embraced the use of #AI to inform #stakeholderdialogue and conducted additional #internalengagement to overcome previous gaps in financial materiality understanding, leading to an altogether more robust corporate strategy. I just read this helpful #EFRAG resource answering questions that have been submitted about the new European Sustainability Reporting Standards (#ESRS). What should I read into there being 20 questions submitted (by my count) on ESRS E1 Climate Change and precisely zero on ESRS S3 Affected Communities and ESRS S4 Consumers and End Users? Does this say something about the current state of the field of just and sustainable business? Does it suggest that world of reporting and disclosure is becoming an E-thing and not an S-thing? Are we a disconnected field, or am I reading too much into this? (I know, I know, I read this document on a Saturday - but I needed a dry counterbalance to watching Oxford United win again in the Championship. I was delighted to co-host the final session of 2024 of the Sustainability Hub Norway (S-HUB) #Reporting network on #Impact Measurement and Valuation with Andreas Friis and our guest speaker Sonja Haut in partnership with Position Green. With ESG funds roller-coaster of getting in and getting out of flavor and scrutiny involved in ESG ranking companies are waiting for signs how serious compliance will be. ESG is just a phrase but legislation is targeting GHG emissions and comprehensive sustainability picture. Immensely important agenda for new EU leadership. 💡 End of August, EFRAG published the XBRL Taxonomy for European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) Set 1 (i.e. for the ESG information that is likely to be material regardless of the sectors companies operate in). This taxonomy will enable the digital tagging of ESRS statements and provides the basis for the European Securities and Market Authority (ESMA) to develop Regulatory Technical Standards (RTS) for tagging the ESRS sustainability statement. ❗ N.B. digital tagging of ESRS will NOT be mandatory for companies until the EC adopts the XBRL taxonomy as part of the ESEF RTS that will be prepared by ESMA. However, EFRAG encourages interested stakeholders to use the XBRL taxonomy as of now for the preparation of human-readable ESRS statements and suggests companies to consider tagging their ESRS statement on a voluntary basis. I would add that even companies, which do not fall under the scope of the Corporate Social Responsibility Directive (CRSD), should consider using this tagging as a way to share their commitment to ESG with their stakeholders. Indeed, XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) taxonomies are crucial for structured digital reporting. They serve as dictionaries that define business concepts and facilitate the tagging of data, making it machine-readable and easily comparable across organizations. Added value of XBRL taxonomies: ▶ Standardization of Reporting: the Digital Tagging process enhances the clarity and accessibility of reports, allowing for automated data extraction and analysis. ▶ Comparability and Consistency: reports become comparable across different organizations and reporting periods. How do large companies currently link CSRD reporting to their overall business strategy? EFRAG has carried out an interesting (albeit qualitative) study to find out where large companies currently stand in the implementation of the CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) and in particular how they are dealing with the first step, the required dual materiality assessment. ❗ The most impressive figure for me is that 85% of the companies surveyed use the results of the materiality analysis not only for reporting, but also to inform the overall corporate strategy and as a basis for decision-making. For me, this is a first success of the directive and shows that the complex regulation has been set up in the right way. Reporting is not an end in itself, but should be a strategic tool for the development of a company and for top-level decisions. The CSRD seems to fulfil this purpose. Last week in Gothenburg, EY hosted a roundtable discussion on the topic of “CSDDD: A Tsunami Overwhelming Procurement or a Business Opportunity?”, focusing on the transformative Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). This event brought together companies from western Sweden to delve into the challenges and opportunities presented by this game-changing regulation. The event began with an EY Point of View, where we examined the broader implications of CSDDD and its impact on procurement and sustainability professionals. We highlighted the crucial role of sustainable sourcing in modern global value chains, as well as the opportunities and advantages this regulation presents for organizations. Next, Henrik Larsen, the former Chief Procurement Officer at A.P. Moller-Maersk, gave an inspiring and insightful case presentation. He shared his experiences emphasizing the necessity of collaboration across the supply chain to transform core business operations, making them sustainable and ready for the future and the ability to decide on bold moves. We concluded the roundtable with engaging discussions among participants in breakout groups, allowing for deeper exploration of the topics and sharing of mutual experiences.
