Today is World Listening Day. World Listening Day is hosted every year by the World Listening Project, a nonprofit organisation that is “devoted to understanding the world and its natural environment, societies, and cultures through the practice of listening and field recording.” They explore acoustic ecology, a discipline that studies the relationship between humans and the natural world as mediated through sound. Listening is an art that requires undivided attention and patience from a person and benefits another who is in need of it. Listening is also beneficial for the listener, improving their listening skills and sharpening their awareness of their surroundings. What an amazing event! United Village Global (UVG) and ENFA - Euro Nordic Funding Alliance alongside delegates from donor, investor, founder, NGO, foreign service, development aid and civic society organizations from *more than 30 countries* gathered these past two days Oct 14-15 in Stockholm to build consortia and select blend financing options for sustainable development. United Village Global (UVG) presented its own brand of blend financing: “monetizing impacts”, and presented a concrete business case transforming waste-to-energy: a partnership between South African technology suppliers and alliance partners who secure the land, the supply of waste, and off-take agreements for the sale of biodiesel. Most importantly, this type of impact investments will produce local jobs and contribute to cleaning up the environment and promote biodiversity, and overall we will quantify the strengthening of the social bonds of the local fabric with access to economic opportunity for women and youth. We hope that Nordic investors will join us in an exciting journey in African emerging growth markets where we intend to replicate a global and timely model for local self-sustaining stability (give hope), growth (give faith) and prosperity (give back): give, give, give. How are we going to build tomorrow? — better together!

Getting a job in climate is tough, particularly if you are switching industries! I think one of the best approaches is to show your horsepower by solving problems that companies are facing. One of the best examples of this approach that I have seen is the brand audit that Art Lapinsch 🔋🌳🛡️did for Lilac Solutions. I am not a brand expert, but Art's work looks and feels a lot like the work product from major brand & marketing agencies that I paid tens of thousands of dollars for at prior jobs. I particularly loved how Art shows his skills and expertise. - Clear frameworks to guide his work - Careful and thorough analysis - Concise recommendations - Well developed execution plan Well done!! Amazing job!! If you are looking for a job in climate, try this same approach. 1️⃣ Identify a company and role that interests you 2️⃣ Deeply research the company, and come up with a perspective about what is working and what needs improvement 3️⃣ Draft and publish a work product that showcases your knowledge and expertise to help the company achieve its goals 4️⃣ Distribute your work on social media, and (most importantly) email your work to the company and others in the sector with the goal of starting a conversation This is quite a bit of work, but companies (particularly startups) want / need help. So, share your passions, skills, and experience!

Building bridges, sharping tomorrow.... that's what is being discussed at the OECD - OCDE Local Development Forum 2024 in Malmö and Copenhagen, Greater Copenhagen these days. Discussing trending topics such as collaborating across borders, expanding local innovation, addressing local skills shortages and driving sustainable development. Collaborations regions may lead faster and with higher agility than nations but still benefitting the entire nations and maybe even being an ignitor for the nations. At Medicon Valley Alliance, we have 28 years experience in cross-border Danish-Swedish triple helix collaboration between universities, hospitals and private life science companies - all with the aim of strengthening our cross-border collaboration and our nations life science ambitions. I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Julie Kjestrup on the Climate Group's 50 Shades of Green podcast to discuss my vision for Mercy Corps as we partner alongside communities to adapt to climate change. It’s always a joy to share more about the depth and breadth of my colleagues’ work to deliver locally led climate programming that’s specific to their unique contexts. And we know there are many effective climate adaptation solutions we can scale, where we’ve seen incredible success in places like the Caribbean, Ethiopia, and Kenya.  For instance, the Islands in the Caribbean are among the most at risk to the effects of climate change, with storms and hurricanes becoming more intense and devastating. Through Mercy Corps’ Caribbean Resilience Initiative, we partner with local organizations to deliver necessities like food, cash, and water after climate emergencies, and help communities build long-term climate resilience. From training on water distribution and solar energy systems, locally operated Resilience Hubs connect people with internet, off-grid solar energy, community gardens and more so communities can better weather these inevitable storms.   In the Horn of Africa, severe drought and flooding are putting immense pressure on pastoralist and farmer livelihoods. Mercy Corps supports communities to make data-driven decisions to combat climate change. Great to see organisations coming together to promote the need for a "certain, credible and consistent framework...With cost of living an ongoing concern for Australian households and businesses, a transition that minimises cost to consumers and allocates it equitably is fundamental to maintaining public support. Australia can efficiently deliver the ISP and similar plans for our other energy systems if we work together...Time is short before ageing generators retire. By working with and refining the tools at hand now, Australia can efficiently meet its existing and future targets to help the world limit climate change, improve affordability and build a new advantage in energy."

While Apparel Impact Institute (Aii) and its partners across the value chain have made significant strides in reducing CO2 emissions through the creation of a collaborative community of practice with a shared costs/ pooled funding model, it's very clear that we face a challenging task. This model, which invests in solutions that demonstrate proven CO2 reductions, potential for wide-reaching impact, and scalability, is a strong step forward. However, the ongoing growth of the industry continues to drive up CO2 emissions. So, now what? To truly transform the environmental impact of fashion, we must rapidly build a system where apparel and accessories are produced with zero negative impact—clean water, clean energy, and net zero emissions. Until we achieve this, it's crucial that more players join this initiative. We urge you to step off the sidelines. Be Bold & Brave! Advocate for this cause within your company. Highlight the importance of future-proofing your brand, mitigating associated risks, and securing the future of the sector. Creating a sense of belonging at Trase - Intelligence for sustainable trade wasn’t easy. The cards were stacked against us. Before we could create a sense of belonging, we had to define the thing we wanted to belong to 👉🏽 we had to define Trase. But some of the most fundamental ways to create affinity among a group of people didn’t apply to us. We aren’t based in a single organization. We don’t work in the same disciplines. We don’t come from the same culture. We don’t live in the same country. In absence of these commonalities, defining a concrete identity as Trase became even more important on our journey to create belonging. Our values, our work culture, and how we treat each other became the framework for that identity. And from that, we built a sense of belonging bit by bit, piece by piece, person by person. 💫 It didn’t happen in a day. It didn’t happen in a month. It 👏🏽 took 👏🏽 years. 👏🏽 Years of investing our time and energy into nurturing the sense of belonging we wanted. Years of commitment and dedication from 👉🏽 every single member of our team. 👈🏽 And above all else? ➡️ It took accountability. Accountability to ourselves and to each other to uphold the values that we set out for Trase. So what’s next for us? 🙋🏾‍♀️ Now the real work begins 💪🏽. The work to maintain that feeling that’s so important to how we function as a team. Because belonging can be a fleeting and fragile feeling. As part of my work at Oxfam in Timor-Leste I have been helping analyse Timor-Leste’s climate change policies from the perspective of transparency, accountability and inclusivity. You can now access the report online. One of the key findings is that the policy framework promotes gender equity, but hasn't yet been implemented. We also highlighted the need to update the climate change policy framework to address the challenges faced by people with disability from the climate crisis. Timor-Leste is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change and international support is critical to build resilience from climate impacts. Next steps are to focus on climate finance and gender equity. It’s been a real privilege to be apart of this impactful work. #climatejustice

TLDR: Dear fashion brands, stop overthinking repair! The Ellen MacArthur Foundation Foundation newest demonstration project is The Fashion ReModel. The project, shaped in consultation with 150+ organisations, aims to identify solutions to scaling circular business models. Yesterday, they convened participants for the first time and I was privileged to speak on their care/repair/alterations panel with SOJO, United Repair Centre, and ACS (Advanced Clothing Solutions). Key concerns: Scalability, profitability and quality control Key takeaways: 💰 Repair is the best customer strategy boost ever **The emotional "it" factor with owned products is much higher than with new. **Leverage this to build relationships, get better data, drive retention, take wallet share, and/or lower acquisition costs. **Pick the metric you are trying to drive first, design an offering to optimise it, and then move on to the next one. **Brands that own the customer and the data will be able to make the most of this.  📈 Scalability = good foundations + system design. **Brands are adept at working with long and disaggregated supply chains; They should leverage this method of well-documented standards and SLAs with local repair partners. **Like buying manufacturing capacity, brands must commit to their partners. **Revenue visibility will enable them to scale talent and ensure capacity to meet the SLA.   **Too often, brands get excited about an initial activation and pay little attention to it afterwards. Uptake becomes sporadic, and everyone is disappointed. **It must be infused long-term, not treated as a campaign stunt.  📄 Again, like manufacturing, most quality control is about communication and standards.   **The median of repair services is actually pretty basic stuff. **The customer wants to understand what work will be done, what outcome to expect, and when they will get it back. **Repairers also want to know what work is required and, if there is a specific way things need to be done, what that is. ⬇ The economics of repair: 40-60% of the repair cost is servicing the order Approx repair cost breakdown: **20% assessing and quoting **20% servicing the order (e.g. logistics, communicating with customers) **20% managing the repair work (e.g. managing staff, quality control, tracking orders) and **40% labour.    **We designed Circulo to remove as much non-labour cost as possible through a fully customisable and configurable automation system that codifies your standards and provides a seamless customer-facing experience across markets.  You don't have to be Patagonia to get the benefits.
