Last week, Malthe Thingvad and Torben Fog had the pleasure of presenting the results and insights from the first two years of the #e2flex project, which Spirii is proud to contribute to 🚗⚡ The e2flex project explores how Charge Point Operators (CPOs) and Distribution System Operators (DSOs) can collaborate to harness the flexibility of EV charging to avoid expensive infrastructure upgrades💰 Here are the main takeaways so far: 💡 EV drivers are highly responsive to price signals, taking full advantage of how flexible EV charging can be. 💡 The use of scheduled charging close to doubled after the energy crisis of 2022 with extreme energy prices. 💡 Users continue to use scheduled charging even though energy prices have normalized, showing they have become more aware of the value of flexibility. 💡 While charging at cheaper hours benefits consumers, it has raised concerns about grid congestion. Due to many users following the same price signals and charging simultaneously, average peak demand has doubled from 2022 to 2023. So... How do we tackle this challenge? 🤔 One solution could be for the DSO to pay users to reduce power consumption during hours when congestion is likely 💸 This is the focus of the next phase of the e2flex project, where we’ll run experiments and study user behavior to assess how to encourage charging patterns that align with the grid's needs.
